The next five years could be the most important in Pitt Athletics history

And when I say Pitt Athletics, I specifically mean Pitt football and basketball. Here’s why I say this. *long read*

Every university around the country is bleeding cash right now- especially when it comes to athletics- due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, you have almost every major conference’s TV contract expiring within the next five years.

Many people think it’s possible that the P5 conferences split off from the rest in the foreseeable future. However, I think there’s a possibility that could be taken a step further- a group of 24-40 schools breaking off from everyone else.

Think about it; why would schools like Alabama, Ohio State, and Texas want to share their revenue with Vanderbilt, Rutgers, and Iowa State, especially when they’re strapped for cash more than ever and major budget cuts are looming? It’d make more sense if the elite programs come together and consolidate their negotiating power for more leverage (and $$) against the major network and tech companies. Is it hard to fathom the idea that ESPN, FOX, Google, or Amazon could throw 10x the revenue they’re currently making at them if it was a ‘super league’ of all the major players in collegiate athletics? They’d probably even pay for whatever fees it takes to get out of grant of right agreements in order for this to happen.

Now, here’s why I say these next few years are so important for our Pitt Panthers. Just like when we got accepted to the ACC, we’d have to put up a heckuva fight to get one of those last few spots. We have past success in both football and basketball, but we’ve struggled in both as of late. Now would be a great time for both programs to take that next step and become winners again because it’d make it a lot easier to sell Pitt for one of those last “lifeboats” if we had recent success in the money-making sports.

On the flip side, what if something like this happens and we don’t get selected? Are the remaining programs attractive enough to come together and get as much money from someone as they are now? Would we be able to sustain the athletic department as it is now? Would we ever get a chance at cracking that top tier again? Who knows.

So, what say you? Is this scenario likely at all, or am I crazy?

You are not sounding crazy at all.

I believe the P5 will break away from an inept and toothless NCAA

But....I do not think Pitt is in a position of worry. Instead, I see several members (if not all) of the AAC coming along for two reasons.

1) several major TV markets
2) several very good basketball programs. It should be noted that the NCAA owns the tournament rights and makes millions off of its production.

If the P5 breaks away, they keep all the money from their new tournament. This is where the AAC comes in.

Finally, I will predict that if the above takes place, look for more conference realignment, if for no other reason than a "re-set" of college sports.

Specifically, Notre Dame gets out of their ACC tie-in and WVU joins the conference. I would also not be stunned to see Maryland come back.

Football runs the bus and the P5 makes their own tv deal money without the NCAA. I don't even think the NCAA has anything to do with the CFP.

I seriously doubt that basketball would be the reason for the P5 leaving the NCAA.

You are correct (as was I in my original post). March Madness is the NCAAs cash register.

But if The P5 plus 1 leaves and starts their own hoops tournament the money is theirs. Period.

It may not be the primary reason for breaking away, but keeping all that cash from your own tourney is way way up on the list.

I think football on all levels leaves the NCAA. I will never forget talking to the President of Leigh and I asked her what her biggest challenge is. Her response was explaining to the alumni why the football team lost. College football is the an American tradition.

alternative prediction:

*we see the g-league (or whatever it's called) taking players from the NCAA. only will increase.
*XFL is up for sale. why wouldn't the new iteration take kids from high school, like the g-league, and offer a path to the NFL that is paid real money?

the big schools would lose their top talent. they are no longer offering a superior product and need the NCAA more than ever.

So Alabama and LSU will not have as many 4 and 5 star players under your scenario. You think they still sell out that game? Do you think there would still be a National TV audience for that game? Does the president still attend that game?

You are severely underestimating the loyalty of the fan bases of those schools that keep pulling in that talent you believe is going to the XFL. They will still sell out, and the networks will keep showing their games. Now more than ever, the P5 dont need the NCAA

This is a very good point. Would be interesting to see a legitimate challenge to NCAA/college football from the XFL or someone else. Would the NFL have to take over it at that point?

Just my 2 cents, part of the excitement of March Madness is the Cinderella runs of teams outside of the P5. I don't know if a P5 only tournament can duplicate that.

Also, I feel that the tournament money per school or conference is a drop in the bucket compared to football. It's not worth breaking up the NCAA just to go after a drop in the bucket worth of cash. They P5 may end up spending the same money to do the administrative arm if the NCAA. I just don't see the benefit.
