Can this program catch a break. I believe PITT has a top 10 defense this year, but we may not get to see them play. Over the years I have seen different oddball things affect this program but this year may take the cake. I know some will make this political.

Was thinking the same thing myself. This time of the year I always optimistically look forward to Pitt football without wishing my summer away and especially so this year with this talent this staff has recruited and developed on the defensive side of the ball and a senior QB but it’s tempered by what’s going on with the surge in positives. In the whole scope of things the nations health and welfare is the most important thing but if you are reading this you are a Pitt fan and we’re looking for big things this year finally with the program.Time will tell it always does.

Well said.......

I look at the victory heights thing too. Pitt finally puts a big commitment to their other sports and then covid hits, making it more difficult to fundraise with an already difficult fanbase on giving.

Thinking only about football but I think there is so much uncertainty with this team. This defense is tough as hell. They alone should get us 7-8 wins. I just don't trust Pickett, don't know about our running backs and our OL yet. Think our receiving group could be very good. But have no proven tight end again. We could be awfully one dimensional and I don't feel great that it mostly depends on Pickett.

This is one of the more unpredictable rosters for me. I could see 8 wins or 10 wins and not be surprised. I think for the first time in a long time there is absolutely no way we win 7 or fewer games with this team.

Agree with this. The defense can keep us in games but the offense would have to win them for us. And I think as sound as the D is, the O is that questionable-starting with Pickett. He has extensive experience as a starter and has not even looked solid, let alone special. There is a lot more wrong with his game than receivers who drop too many balls. He is very inconsistent. Also not giving Whipple the benefit of any doubt at this point either. I won’t judge him on one year with the issues he has to work with, particularly a subpar O line, but he didn’t do much to impress.

If you think this is a short term project or outcome - ya missed the point

Its definitely longer term. But how long is it going to be before people get back to their jobs, want to donate, etc. And that doesn't include the support needed for any shortfall if football season is canceled this year. If you don't think there is an impact on this you are missing the point.

Can we add to the curse theory that one way our OL would or could have gotten better was to practice everyday against our DL and now that is out the window!

The defense will keep them in all 12 games. That in and of itself is 6 wins in my book.

What the offense does in the other six will tell the tale

Less turnovers than last year, and more 3rd down conversions,

They win 9, at least.

Less turnovers.....more 3rd down success.

That starts with not being in 3rd and long all the time. Which means you need to be able to run the ball and complete the short passes. Which means Pickett, the O line, the receivers and running backs all have to be a lot better. The play calling has to be better. Basically the entire offense needs to be much improved for the team to get anywhere regardless of how good the D is. .
