Well, time to put aside that stinker of a bowl game and take a look back at the past season. Overall, the season couldn't be considered anything but a success. We had a first year coach (again), new systems to learn (again), and a first year starting QB (again). We lost our All America, POY RB in the first game of the season. Despite all these issues, we won more games then we've won since DW left town. While the end of the season was disappointing, this season brought us exactly what Pitt needed....progress. Not super dramatic progress, but progress nonetheless. We have a coach who energized the players and the fans. Recruiting is looking much better then it has in years. Most importantly, we have an administration that clearly supports the program.
While our direction is correct, it's also very clear to those who aren't wearing rose colored glasses, that we have much work to do in order to get the program to a level that we can seriously challenge for an ACC title. We need many more players like Whitehead and Boyd. If you look at our offense, there's really only one player who requires game planning buy the other team. On defense, we have a lot of positions manned by guys who play hard, but simply lack the talent needed to execute what Narduzzi needs. A key to our long term success is going to be closing strong on this recruiting class. The guys we're getting in this class will be the key players for us in 2-3 years. We need many more playmakers across the board at virtually every position.
I believe Narduzzi has us moving in the right direction, but it is clearly going to take more then one season for the turnaround to happen.
