The Shop412 Controversy

It’s their company name. I also believe what you’re using it for is considered. It doesn’t prevent all use of the word/number. Shop 412 just happens to sell athletic apparel.

You can trademark a number just like you can trademark any common word (Amazon, Apple, etc)

This would be like US Steel suing the Steelers for morphing the steel logo. Does Pittsburgh Paint and Glass have an ongoing beef with Pittsburgh Precision Brush Painting or the Pittsburgh Glass Company?

My guess is that this 412 t-shirt clan is making waves because they don't want Nike printing anything with 412 on it without...ahem, "just compensation" and nothing more.

You are 100% correct. The Steelers would not have been to use that logo without permission. But they did have permission from the American Iron and Steel Institute, and in fact wore the original logo that just said “Steel” at first, and then changed it (with permission) in 1963 to Steelers
