The spring game will actually be a game

The coaches are picking the seniors, placing them on two squads, and then the seniors will draft the rest of the team. Then they'll play against each other, and presumably keep score like in a real game, not by some crazy point system.

Re: I Like It & Link On The Spring Game!

1. It will be an actual game and worth going to and watching for recruits and fans.

2. It will create Two Teams of Players on both Offense and Defense to be an evaluation of each player at positions and not just a drill. Players will be able to show their weaknesses and strengths.

3. The Coaches will be also be learning among themselves and be evaluated by coach Pat Narduzzi on their own coaching.

I like all the changes and how Coach Pat just has his own way of doing things since he comes from being Coach's Son. Coach Pat just seems to be no nonsense type of coach and lets just get it done and play the best we can without having any distractions. So far, the players and coaches seem to be accepting and adapting to this new way of doing things at Pitt Football. It is quite exciting and having Fitz and Aaron there is terrific.

TRIBLIVE ARTICLE & LINK:

When Pitt lines up for its Blue-Gold spring game April 18 at Highmark Stadium, former Pitt All-Americans and current NFL stars Larry Fitzgerald and Aaron Donald will serve as honorary head coaches. Fitzgerald will coach the Blue team and Donald the Gold. "I always love coming back to Pittsburgh, and I'm excited to see firsthand the work coach (Pat) Narduzzi is doing with the team," said Fitzgerald, the Arizona Cardinals' all-time leader in receptions. "My Blue squad better be ready to go."

"This will be a lot of fun," said Donald, who was a first-round draft choice of the St. Louis Rams last year. "I still know a lot of the players on the team. Larry better have his guys ready because I know our Gold squad will be fired up to play."

"Hopefully, some of their greatness will rub off," Narduzzi said.

Pitt will use a game format, with the team divided by position into two squads rather than just the offense running plays against the defense. Narduzzi said seniors will draft players onto each team.

Admission is free.

This is the most excited I think I've ever been for a Spring Game. Highmark couldn't be more perfect for a Pitt Spring Game. Perfect size, great location, close to the action, etc.

I absolustely love them making the Spring Game actually a "game" instead of a practice. Its great for fans. Although we dont care who wins, it'll be neat (channeling my inner Paul Chryst) to see if lets say the Blue team can come back from a 2 TD deficit in the 2nd Half. We'll have a rooting interest in certain situations rather than just seeing how the 1st team offense or defense looks.

I think it'll also cause the intensity levels to rise. The seniors picked the team and not only do the underclassmen have to play well for the coaches, they have to play well for the guys that picked them along with AD or Larry Fitz.

Great job, Coach Narduzzi. Looking forward to it.

Re: I Like It & Link On The Spring Game!

Captain, not to nitpick you, but with all due respect I think you have a few misconceptions in your post.........

"Coach Pat just has his own way of doing things since he comes from being Coach's Son."

Not quite accurate. He picked up most of this stuff from being attached to Dantonio's hip for 10-plus years, this is exactly the way Dantonio runs his spring games as well. Of course, Duzzi had a lot of influence over the way things were done at MSU, Dantonio was not too egotistical to give his most trusted staffers a lot of influence and input. But this spring game format is Dantonio's way.

Narduzzi's personality comes from his father, but as for his coaching philosophy, he has made no bones about his intention to copy what he and Dantonio did at MSU as closely as possible. So far, that is exactly what he has done. When he was hired, I really hoped he'd do exactly that, basically be a Dantonio clone. And why wouldn't he? Look at their results.

The coaches are not emphasizing player evaluation based on this spring game in which the first, second and third teamers will be all mixed up playing with different groups than they practice and scrimmage with. It's more about creating some competition, letting the players have some fun, play loose and get after it while giving the fans some entertainment. When I played we did something similar to this, it was more about letting us blow off some steam and have some fun than anything else. The everyday practices are where the individual evaluations take place. Let's just hope nobody gets hurt, because guys will be flying around with a little more energy than usual trying to make highlight reel plays. I'm sure the QBs will be wearing the red jerseys.

3. The Coaches will be also be learning among themselves and be evaluated by coach Pat Narduzzi on their own coaching.

Again, not really. That's what they do all day in practice and in film study. The coaches will be coaching, but their primary objective will not be to prove anything--it will really be about getting the players fired up and motivated. This is more about rewarding the players for all their hard work this spring.

No matter what, it should be a lot more entertaining than it has been in many years.

If I'm actually trying to win this thing, I'd pick Voytik #1, no brainer. Then you know you either get your choice of Conner or Boyd with your next pick.

I strongly suspect Boyd goes #2. He is the only playmaker we really have in the passing game, doesn't sound like anyone else has really emerged. Then we have a half dozen good options at RB after Conner goes. Next I'm grabbing O linemen.

I agree with you that Mark Dantonio without question has help mold Coach Pat's Coaching philosophy, but Mark Dantonio is a "No Nonsense Coach" whom I have admired for years and just goes about quietly doing what he expects from his Staff and Players. I also agree as you point out the Spring Game is a copy of MSU System under Coach D.

In addition, Coach Narduzzi was part of Coach Dantonio's success as much as Jackie Sherrill was part of Johnny Majors in my opinion.

Finally, it is my belief some great coaches come from Father's that raised their kids to join them in coaching. I cite Tony Bennett at UVA, Sean and Archie Miller, and some day I believe Tyler Palko will be one too. Now of course there are just as many failures like Jay Paterno, Beamer, and others. What I really like are Players that were coached by great Coaches and became great Coaches too, like Bear Bryant's Jackie Sherrill or Pop Warner's Jock Sutherland.

However, all of our expectations are worthless until we se Coach Pat win at Pitt as a Head Coach. Although I am very excited about coach Pat, I was the same for Harris, Wannstedt, Graham, and Chryst and all won at Pitt but seldom at a consistent 10+ game level like Dantonio! Until we see it, it is right now irrelevant except for portending expectations.

I played too, and we scrimmage and play against another school in a scrimmage, this is going to be a Spring Game for evaluation of Coach Pat's Staff and Players. If Coach Pat was choosing the players and handing them over to the coaches I would agree with you. Yet, these Coaches chose the players and like the article says will choose what positions the players will be evaluating? This to me shows the Coaches are being evaluated as ell by coach Pat since they have some autonomy in choosing the players and positions and will be calling the plays and that is far different than what Harris, Wannstedt, Graham, and Chryst did. Sure every day practices is where evaluations take place, but that changes when game day arrives. This is the process of all new Coaches do, but Coach Pat is making his Coaches and Players after all these Spring Practices finally produce in a Scrimmage Game that will show their skills and calls in a game, not a drill or practice. It is a step up from prior practices and scheduled scrimmages as far as I am concern. Competition as you describe is in every practice, scrimmage and especially in every game.

3. The Coaches will be also be learning among themselves and be evaluated by coach Pat Narduzzi on their own coaching.

Again, disagree with due respect, the coaches are choosing the players that in itself is a decision they are making, and playing them in certain positions another call they are making, and choosing the plays for the game, What you describe above is just another practice or scrimmage as far as I am concern that is happening at very practice.

After this Spring Game is over, I have no question Coach Pat will ask his Coaches why did you choose this player at this position, how to feel he performed and is it the right call, and together they will be able to evaluate these players on how they played, as well as his coaches on how, why, and they made their selections and calls as well.

It is like Coach Pat said, he is the CEO, but he has to evaluate his staff and players uses delegation to make sure they are getting the job done, and that is different from practices and scrimmages, it is now a simulation game for new head Coach to look at his Coaches on how they are choosing to coach their Players
.

Finally, it is also a great way to attract fans, and former player alumni, recruits and for the second time in my life, I am thinking of going to the Spring "Game" (Not The Spring "Scrimmage").

Although I can agree with many things you posted, we can agree to disagree on the differences, but this how I see it!

Re: Thebadby2, Respectfully, Disagree!

Cap--not to keep this meaningless debate going, but you're laboring under a misconception about the format of this game--the senior players are drafting the teams, not the coaches. The coaches split the seniors into two groups, and let them draft the underclassmen, position by position from the rest. They do rock paper scissors--literally--to determine who drafts first. There is no coach input into the process. That;s part of the fun of it.

The important stuff is done in practice and film study. This is just for fun, camaraderie, and old fashioned competition.

Re: Thebadby2, I Stand Corrected!

If the Coaches did not choose the teams, I stand corrected and agree it is less about evaluating the staff then.

Cap--a good man knows when to fold 'em.

What the heck is that graphic you posted? Is that a little kid's drawing of a Pitt helmet? If so, I love it.

Re: Thebadby2, I Still Stand By Other Comments!

We agree on more than we disagreed and complimented you before on your insights that I appreciated and defer to your following the Team and Players more than me! I come here to learn not win debates, we ain't Penn State!

Captain, that PITT helmet, love it.

Re: Thebadby2, I Still Stand By Other Comments!

Really enjoyed reading the above fellows. Really good sound insight. Appreciated the back and forth you both are class guys. Hail To PITT!

Re: Thebadby2, I Still Stand By Other Comments!

Here is something that this draft made me think about.

The coaches have changed the strategy of how the team will play defense, and created real competition by sliding guys up and down the depth chart based on how well they are playing, and generally pushing the defense to play faster and better. It makes me optimistic that our defense will perform much better than last year's D.

But when I looked at our defense in terms of who would get selected highest in this draft, I really had no clue. We have a whole lot of guys who I think can play, but no stars. Not a single star on defense. A few of the defensive players are seniors and will already be on a team, but among the first 20 that get drafted, I honestly couldn't pick the order any better than by random selection.

It would be interesting to actually see the draft order, to see from the seniors' perspective who the top defensive players are. For that matter, it would be interesting just to see who the top 20 are.

The offense is different, I would have a much easier time ranking them in draft order. The fact that its nearly impossible to do with the defense is either very interesting (getting to watch how it plays out both in the draft and the the fall depth chart) or, depressing. Depends on how you approach these things I guess.

Re: Thebadby2, I Still Stand By Other Comments!

thanks VV1.

I don't always agree with Captain but there's probably not a nicer guy to have a disagreement with on the Lair.

If I ever meet the man I'll shake his hand and buy him a beer-or three.
