The worst thing, Pitt Brass did, that neg. impacted recruiting was getting rid of Pitt Stadium.....

Couldn’t agree more......college football is about campus life and tradition. The day
they brought out the spirit box for the last campus game ever, nd game, was the last nail in the pitt coffin. The first one being pushing Jackie out the door....in between the college game outgrew pitts ability to compete.

I wish Pitt Stadium was still an option too, but it was becoming a dump and for whatever reason they didn’t want to commit the funds for renovations.

Pitt will eventually play on campus again, but it’s not going to be for quite a while.

Sorry most Kids / Athletes want to walk not drive to get to work. It brings a whole different vibe when the facilities are on campus or walking distance

Pitt was going into the UPMC Sports Performance Complex before a decision was made on Pitt Stadium. Whether Pitt Stadium was still there or not, or if in an alternative universe a stadium was actual built within the 140 acres Pitt has in Oakland, they'd still be driven to practice every day.

But most college athletes aren't walking to practice. They're driving or taking campus shuttles (or trams if you are at WVU). Unless you haven't seen many campuses and their athletic facilities, as many of these campuses are miles across and the primary facilities far from the main concentration of dorms or core academic facilities. Hell, Beaver Stadium is about a mile and a half from Old Main.

...Beaver Stadoum is exactly 1 mile from Rec Hall ... somewhat less from Old Main...2 blocks from the practice facilities...

Right there it is in a nutshell

.....of course with a historically incompetent AthDept to go along with what has happened in college sports, Pitt is what it is.

Fixing FB and men’s BB , the only two sports which really count , is an uphill battle for Lyke and Pitt.

Um nope

Maybe renovation during the glory years was due but they simply covered the wooden seats with aluminum

I remember...
Not a day too soon though...probably still have splinters in my arse from Pitt Stadium...

A different vibe?

We lost by 45 points.

I haven't even had my Monday morning coffee and this already is the dumbest post of the week.

The reason Pitt did not use $200,000,000.00 to properly renovate Pitt Stadium is because they realized that bitching and moaning from it's alums was the easier and less expensive option. I've yet to meet a Pitt fan as generous with their wallet as they are with their venom.
The legion of perpetual whiners among the fan base gives the remaining 10% of fans an unwarranted reputation of being petulant children.

Another dumb thread... We were sure slaying those championships year after year while playing at Pitt Stadium. All those 5 stars were too much handle prior to moving to Heinz Field.

Good grief....

Obviously......
The only solution when located in Hospital, hotel, new Corp dominated and partially slum-ridden Uber-congested Oakland, is to get the undergraduate school out of there!

Not one from pitt
Right ...and why no one ever notices it’s fans of other schools normally provoking the on campus stuff “ it’s a shame there’s no stadium “ etc etc then the whining Pitt fans fall for the trap and chime right in ... is ..well beyond me.

I mean it’s been 20 years.. has a single recruit ever said off campus stadium was the reason they didn’t commit to Pitt?

Pitt stadium was a dump with no amenities and had too much deferred maintenance that was needed. The Pete really improved campus life for current students and until Barnes f*cked it up had the BB program in a good spot.

I agree that it was fun and convenient back in the day to roll out of bed, go to a few house parties and then up to a 1 PM game walk up Cardiac Hill but Pitt stadium was past its useful life span...and there was no parking in Oakland as there was when the stadium was built in 1925.

Maybe they should hire a coach that prioritizes recruiting and give him the budget to get it done rather than throw money at stupid, excuse laden, pipe dreams?

ding, ding, ding.....winner, winner chicken dinner. Take that money and hire excellent coordinators (why not match LSU for Canada if you are serious about competing. Sounds just like the Pirates corporate line and "financial flexiblity"). Hire a P5 coach like the coach at Iowa State and pay him 5 million. Make a Taj Mahal football only dorm on campus. All better ways to spend the money than trying to get a new stadium.

The players bussed to Pitt Stadium to. Give it a rest. The place was a decrepit dump and no renovating would have brought it up to what today's kids want. Like an old golf instructor once told me, "you can't polish a turd".

I think it could have been saved. But it would have been at enormous cost. And attendance would be exactly the same. The issue is that it is magnified by those stupid yellow seats at Heinz. So I'm in the camp that the move to Heinz was wrong, but it shouldn't be as crippling as many make it out to be. The money savings from not having an on-campus stadium to maintain should be pumped into hiring great coordinators, but obviously that isn't happening as Canada was allowed to walk away, just like Barry Bonds and the pirates. Financial flexibility I guess.

Another thing that would be better than building a stadium.....lobby/work with the county to extend the T into Oakland. Would make it much easier to get to the games. Plus the students wouldn't be in such a rush to get back on the bus. They could go to the bars on the North Shore and then take the T back. Plus you could take the T to the bars on non game days as well.

Pitt is an urban campus and needs to think of its boundaries as being the whole city. If the North Shore was easily connected to Oakland, the students would feel more attached to heinz and show up and stay the whole game since it wouldn't be such a hassle to get back. And they would have the night life of the North Shore bars/

Have you ever heard or read of a college kid actually saying that?
Yes both our sons who attended PITT, their friends, and almost every PITT student or PITT graduate that attends the tailgate we go to.

Other than those kids we don't know many other PITT kids.

Most would prefer to be able to walk to the stadium, and walk to their favorite watering hole after the game rather than wait and take a bus trip back or use public transportation.

Walking distance from Old Main to Beaver Stadium according to Google maps is 1.3 miles.

yep.....

the "Vibe" was so great in Pitt Stadium that 12,000 showed up for Boston College....with our new AD physically able to shake everyone's hand.

On campus vibe for the students my ass.

Many have already stated it but the real crime was not keeping PS updated. Would've been a great project to lower the field, eliminate the track and remodel with 30K with seatbacks and luxury boxes within the historic facade. No dice. The grass away from Pitt is always greener. I just read an article about how amazing Yogi Roth is doing. We have hot garbage doing our pregame because he moved on. We continually suck in part because our players largely don't care about Pitt and leave ASAP. Very few Pitt stars from the past are active in the local community, they get away and stay there. There is no culture to Pitt football.

The original comment was about recruiting, and my question referred to recruits who indicated they wanted to walk to "work." Sure, students who live in Oakland would rather walk to a game than take a bus, but having to take a bus to football games did not prevent those kids you mentioned from attending Pitt.

As someone in this thread previously said, the first nail was letting Sherrill go. You can’t have a program without a coach who can win. And they haven’t had one since.

The 2nd was leveling Pitt stadium and not building an on-campus venue. Weather or not, the atmosphere around Heinz Field was a mess. What did the city do to the parking situation down there? There used to be parking lots. Use the parking garages in Oakland and build a stadium.

Think about all of the awesome amenities we could see at an on-campus stadium:
*No parking
*No tailgating
*No river access
*Poor transportation into Oakland
*Reduced bar/restaurant scene
*Smaller video board
*Smaller bathrooms
*Fewer in-stadium food options

But hey, it's on campus and no yellow seats. Gonna be awesome when there are still only 38,000 at the game and the students leave during the third quarter.

Pitt didn't let Sherrill go. He wasn't under contract and felt disrespected and saw that he didn't have Administrative support...so he left and became college football's first $1M coach at Texas A&M.

They decided to build restaurants, bars, clubs and office buildings that would be used every day...you know useful stuff.

You honestly don't have a clue what you're talking about.
