To the average college football fan, you would think Pitt may be comparable to Northwestern when it comes to offensive philosophy. Strong emphasis on running the ball, physical O-line play, QB's that manage a game and a generally conservative approach. Here's a few interesting stats...Kenny Pickett had as many attempts this season (271) as Northwestern had completions! Pitt threw the ball 271 times (1841 yards)...Northwestern 454 times (2844 yards). Did Northwestern run a lot less than Pitt being a conservative Big 10 team? They ran it 454 times, Pitt 481 times, not a big difference. Pitt had much more success on the ground than Northwestern, since they lost their feature back earlier this season, but my point is, to win consistently, you need to have the proper balance between the pass and the run. Pitt had one game this year where we passed for over 300 yards. Games when Pitt passed for 200 to 300 yards? 0 times!!!! between 100 and 200? 9 times! between 0 and 100? 3 times!!! If you're afraid to pass the ball, you will never be consistently successful, no matter how strong your running game is. C'mon Watson, it's elementary!
