This Fan Base Is Nuts

We are a scorned bunch, piranha.. no disagreement there.. we are like the average looking girl in high school, complaining about boys who never ask us out but when someone does, we assume it's some sort of cruel joke on us. Like a non-demonic Sissy Spacek in Carrie..

Well, let's be honest, we pay peanuts , and if Duzz gets a nice raise , by 50 other schools , we don't match, he is gone , rinse and repeat , that's just plain economics, and before this administration, the last didn't give a damn about football, Pitt deserves what it has right now. Hopefully they prove over time , not same old Pitt

Easy to blame the administration alone. The past administrations share some of the blame no doubt.

But the fan base's unwillingness to donate money or buy tickets is the current problem and just as big a problem. That's what impacts our ability to pay coaches salaries more than anything else.

People don't want to hear it. But it's true.

They will pay narduzzi and whatever staff he wants. Like you said, it was the last administration. They caught lightning in a bottle by not exploring many options and Dixon turning into what he did. They were hoping wanny or someone like that did the same thing, because let's be honest they were never going to go out and a get a coach, and keep him, if it would've cost them fair market price.

Exactly! At the very least, people could attend the games and not feed into this constant negativity.

I agree with you that the current administration appears committed to a good football program. But there's only so much they can do. Fans have to buy tickets and donate. Otherwise, we will eventually get priced out of the coaching staff.

I agree with you all, I am 45, this is the first administration that seems to be behind all sports and wants to win, and will try.

It is true. The administration needs to step up and pay anyway and look at it as a long term investment in the program. Keep winning, and it should pay off in the future.

Being honest, besides us diehards, why would anyone in their right mind donate to Pitt sports especially football after the last 30 years, honestly ?

If things are not going well, then someone needs fired. When things are going well, then a coach or player must be leaving. Unbelievable.
Okay let's try this 1 more time. Pitt has not been relevant in football in over 35 years. We Pitt fans have suffered for decades. So maybe you can excuse some of us for worrying about a player or coach leaving when things are looking up.

Very true. My only argument would be though that Narduzzi's future here has nothing at all to do with what Graham or even Chryst did. He's pretty close to building a legit program here. Unless someone offers him an enormous amount of money that Pitt just doesn't have, why would you leave that?

Already the Purdue rumors started. Is that a joke? Purdue literally has nothing at all to offer a coach, nothing. They are one of the worst programs in all of college football right now. As bad as Pitt was when he took over here, we had a decent foundation. It would take years upon years to make Purdue even average again.

Someone is an alum or fan of The University of Pittsburgh and wants to support the coaches and student-athletes.

Well I don't think many people believe the Purdue rumors(I hope not anyways) because if I'm not mistaken those started when Duzz was getting criticized strongly for a defense not making adjustments. Plus close loss after close loss. So I put zero stock in a Purdue rumor.

But I think Canada will be sought after and I think fans have a right to be worried if a persistent rumor is out there of him leaving. This kind of thing has happened to Pitt over and over. I'm hoping this time we can actually keep these solid coaches and build a winning program.

People are either part of the problem or solution. Attend the games, and if you cannot show up then you can still financially support the program.

Okay but what does that have to do with fans worrying about a coach leaving? I'm not really getting your argument.

is there any other program that loses coaches to better jobs, when their coaches are going 6-7? I mean, a lot of schools lose their coaches after damn good seasons, that's life but we are losing our coaches after they lose 7 games in a season.. That's unreal to me, we've lost two coaches, back to back, to better jobs, who both finished under.500 and lost 7 games in one season..

Anyone who gave Pederson a dime after the first stint, needs their damn head examined, better charities than that fool and his boss

Not sure who could answer this. Has clemson always had such a huge fanbase? They have surged as a program lately and i wonder what their attendance was like when they were mediocre.

Well... on this site it is maybe a dozen posters doing all that.

As for the coach leaving talk though, that is just what happened historically, but we also ran coaches out screaming. Fraud, Chryst both left because I am sure, they realized it is a lose-lose fan base for them. Wannstedt had his supporters for sure, but the Wlat Harris faithful were constantly in smileys ear, and for some god knows what reason Wanny was pushed out (dont wanna debate that, it happened, but like him or hate him, the record was good despite having sucky QBs). Harris woulda stayed I think, but he had his indiscrepancies that admin didnt like.

Anyways, I dont think anyone is warm and fuzzy until we find a coach that says "holy shit, I love working here". Narduzzi has pretty much said that verbatim, and barring some horrific couple bad seasons, I think he has a job here for a long long time if he wants it. I just hope the fans come back and treat him well

I think we just got unlucky (or lucky considering what we have now). Graham's move to ASU was lateral if not downward given the success we had under the last years of Wanny and where ASU was when Erickson left. He just wanted the F out. Chryst was hired away not because of his success here but because is alma mater was tired of losing coaches without ties to the program and wanted a safe Wisconsin guy. Its turned out great for them so far. But I tend to think Alvarez has a big hand in how that program is run (probably the reason Bielema and Andersen left). Chryst is probably knew going in what the situation was and was OK with it. In the end it worked out great for us.

The problem with this point is that we had a variety of posters (including some who have posted in this thread) who wanted Narduzzi fired three weeks ago or at least were saying he was destined to be a failure here. And he's not even completed his second season!

The fan base is a big reason why we lose and/or can't retain even decent coaches. How can any fan of a school call for a coach to be fired in his second season??? Especially after he won 8 games in his first?

I suspect that a BIG part of both of those departures was the Athletic Director at the time.

a variety of posters said no such thing. Problem is, many posters, or a variety of posters, cant distinguish being critical of the team and wanting a coach fired. Any criticism of this staff is not wanting them fired.. But sadly, many posters take this as all or nothing instead of what it actually is..

I am on this board a lot, too much and I honestly haven't seen any poster flat out say, Fire Narduzzi.. Maybe, MAYBE there was one irrational poster but even that, I doubt..

What is ur definition of relevant? Not trying to start a fight but i am just trying to understand ur perspective. I went to pitt from 99-2003 and saw pitt come back from the dark ages. Before that i was an nd fan (i know i know terrible). We have had enough success and close years that i am all in on pitt. I have always felt we had the tendency to blow one or two games that could have taken us to the
Next level. it had been rare since i have followed pitt that we have been god awful like syracuse or buttgers or Maryland. I like u want more but i just wonder what u consider relevant.

Oh I don't know, top 10 ranking a few times in the past 35 years for starters. Maybe a few conference titles, maybe finishing in the top 25 rankings after the season more than 3 or 4 times in the last 3+ decades. A few New Years Day bowls. Something even Northwestern and Rutgers were able to accomplish.

The biggest thing is retaining a good head coach. While Canada has clearly been very good and I'd like him to stick around for a long time, that's not likely. And it's actually a good sign that other schools want your guys.

If they are successful and are willing to pay, then the assistant jobs become attractive, particularly if guys are getting - I'll just keep it simple - promotions. Instead of hoping they can land someone they might finally get into a position where they can have choices.

Anyone that's viewed as being successful is going to be a target. And I'd rather have that than a staff full of stiffs and duds.

What do call the fiesta bowl?

Agreed, I'm sure it did...probably more of a clash w/ TG. But there was never a doubt PC was going to leave when Wisconsin came calling. I was a matter of when, not if. And I don't think anyone was too sad when he left.

Curious- what spurred this post? Sometimes we create our own problems by giving credence to rumors, a number of which are attributable to the scum at Penn State. The trash in State College have spread rumors about Pitt going back to the Marino days when they fueled speculation that he was a big partier. Relax....things are headed in the right direction....finally.

I posted this for the numerous posters that keep posting nonsense.

Agree but I'm worried about Canada because he right now has legitimately one of the best offenses in the country. It really has nothing to do with what coaches before have done here, he's just really doing things that impressive that he's probably going to get some really really big time job offers. Hopefully we can convince him to stay though, this offense is the real deal.
