Winning games over Duke , Louisville and Syracuse are exactly what this program needs to allow JC to have the credibility to walk into a 5* stars house and walk out with a commitment . Selling a vision is far harder than selling actual results . If you can’t beat these teams on the court how are you ever going to beat them out in recruiting 5* studs ?

Where I think the difference between JD and JC will be if Pitt continues on this trajectory is that JD failed to capitalize on Pitts great on court success in recruiting . JD had a chance to make Pitt be Gonzaga east of college bb . If JC can continue to win these big games he will elevate Pitts recruiting to heights we haven’t seen since the Golden Panther era . Let me tell you it was a lot of fun watching guys like Charles Smith , Jerome Lane and Brian Shorter !

Two other thoughts if this level of play continues
1) better get your ticket orders in quick
2) on a negative side this has to put JC higher on that list to replace Coach K when the time comes

ps ...another difference between JD and JC is that JD only used his success to leverage a better deal for himself and would of gladly finished his coaching career at Pitt . If Duke comes calling .....JC is gone .

Don't be so sure about him leaving for Duke. He has made a lot of very public comments about being his own man and building his own program. At Pitt he has a chance to be our Coach K. At Duke he will always just be the guy who replaced Coach K. I am not saying he won't go to Duke, but I think he came here to build a legacy for himself and his brother.

If he’s successful enough at Pitt to earn an opportunity to coach at his alma mater and follow his mentor I can’t see how anyone could refuse . Exclusive of Duke I agree with you .

Duke >> Pitt. That’s obvious and we all know it.

Is that all your going off of, or do u have info that that is Capel’s 100% goal, to be the next HC at Duke.
I have zero inside knowledge of whether or not his end goal is to be the Duke head coach.

I’m fine with my current girlfriend but if Heidi Klum wants to date me I’ll say sayonara

I get that and I think there’s a 95% chance he takes it if offered.

The other 5% Comes down to a few factors IMO.

Timing - let’s say Coach K leaves after this year, does he jump ship and leave everything he’s built before seeing Year 4? (maybe he does and just takes X with him lol).. or , maybe K coaches for 4-5 more years and by that point Capel has us a consistent Top 5 ACC team that’s HIS program.

Location - are him and his family comfortable here and like it here? Little more to do here in Pittsburgh , but also all his family roots are in NC so that’s probably “home” for him

Does he want to replace K - Probably yes , but there’s a lot of pressure there whereas here there will be a statue of him if he gets us to a F4.

And that’s not even taking into account whether or not Duke wants him. You have to think they’ll take a shot at guys like Brad Stevens , then there’s the whole K coaching tree. or maybe K wants one of the guys currently on staff to get it.

Or just hope that the boosters giving the $ for the hire are racist lol

I mean, does Paul Chryst jump ship for Wisconsin after year 3 and not see the fruits of their labor in year 4? I think you guys are vastly overestimating *any* coach’s loyalty to players and school they’re currently at. It’s *most likely* his dream job and it hasn’t been open in 40 years. Who knows if it’ll be open again during his career?

All that said, if K retired this year I don’t know if he’d be in the top 5 they even consider.

Football is a bad comparison because Pitt has a ceiling that they don’t necessarily have in basketball.

Once again, the way he talks about it, odds are he’s gone If given the opportunity.

But maybe he wants to be his own guy and be the Coach K at Pitt. Again , I agree with you I just don’t think taking the Duke job is AS easy of a choice as it seems. A lot of pressure following up on a legend like that, and you could be gone in 2 years or so if you don’t produce right away.

Whereas Pitt is becoming Capel’s program. It’s his, everything that has happened is because of him.

It won’t be that way at Duke. But he also seems to love Duke so much that it probably won’t matter.

I mean there is a cap at Pitt though. Financially we can’t compete with their salary or their resources. Or their prestige

Yes, technically Pitt can compete for the same
titles but at Wisconsin in football they DO compete for those titles. And Duke WINS those titles.

That's why they need to offer the job to Jason Capel (if he's still here)when and if that day comes. He would continue the good job his brother has already done.

I agree as well -- he will only leave here for Duke and I think the longer K coaches and the more success he has here the harder it will be for him to leave because then he is leaving his program. I think he would be more likley to leave in the next 1-2 years than in 3-5 years especially if the trajectory of the program continues up.

"Fruits" another 6-6 season with recruiting falling off a ledge... Paul was a year from possibly being fired at Pitt. He made the right career choice.

All of that said, Duke is going to hire whoever they want. Lol

Just like UCLA
Following legends or going to high expectation schools creates high bars and can lead to short careers.

I knew it had to be u with the 'lol' about someone's opinion. Y is that so farfetched? He might want to be his own man. Y keep following somebody? I think its perfectly possible that any coach would feel this way.
Because it’s his Alma mater, close to where he grew up and Pitt doesn’t have the same brand recognition, resources to compete or pay that a duke can. And he’d be the first black head coach in Duke history I believe. I think making history like that would be special for him.

In short, every aspect of him turning down Duke to stay at Pitt is extremely far fetched.

Yep. Craig Esherick, Bill Guthridge, et al.

As an exception to those examples, I think Jeff Capel would be up to the challenge at Duke.

Isn’t he Pitt’s first black coach? Maybe he likes Pittsburgh I know I like Carmel by the Sea better then Annapolis.
