I’d like to see more traditional sets, using the recipe you mentioned and just sprinkle in the “flare” stuff. Pickett could really get comfortable and not have to rely on an offense that moves the pocket for a 3 yard flat and 7 yard out route.

If you roll out to complete a 3 yard flare or a 7 yard out and the receiver is covered, where do you go with the ball?

We are running a very low reward offense.

The pass plays are a joke. Continuous passes to the outside that end up being a 30 yard throw that goes 3 yards vertically. They aren't easy throws to complete and there is very little reward.

The slant was open all day and it's a throw that Pickett is comfortable making. Not sure what their problem is with throwing down the middle of the field.

I guess we are trying to protect a young QB with all this rinky dink sideways passing but actually we are retarding his progress.

Time to start running a real offense including throwing the damn ball down field. That’s where the end zone is located.

The refusal to probe the middle of the field is puzzling for sure. By simply looking in the flats it makes the Ds job far easier.

One series we completed 2 consecutive passes which netted a TOTAL of 2 yards.... pathetic.... Watson is a real risk taker.... and this is supposed to be an effective rushing team... if so, why even bother with the sideway passing!

Agree with you for the most part. I think Watson is trying to roll Pickett out because there hasn't been a pocket when Pickett drops straight back--the protection hasn't been there. When there has been protection, Pickett is indecisive, shows happy feet, and holds the ball too long.

Watching our typical pass play there are 3 receivers out on routes, none of which are vertical or beyond about 15 yards deep. The RB will flare out laterally as the 4th read. The defenders don;t have to sweat much as we play the whole game right in front of them. I suspect Watson is calling this stuff because he thinks it's helping Pickett. To some extent the thinking is understandable, but the lack of any ability to protect the passer, stretch the field out and put some pressure on the back line defenders is making us incredibly easy to defend. To top it off Pickett is playing tentatively, jittery and is showing some poor instincts. Watson would be better served to insert an extra wide out or 2 and try to spread the field out and create some spacing in the short and intermediate areas, send at least one WR deep to occupy a safety, and get Pickett to get the ball out fast to a player in space. As it is the offense is terrible. It's all very disappointing.

Well it's a basic principle that if you can work the slant effectively, eventually the safeties start to play up and you can get a receiver deep behind them. But you still have to protect the passer.

Pickett is not the problem. He will be ok if we get a decent OC. Watson is junk. Second half stats are a joke. Out online should be serviceable but that coach has not made any difference in improved play as far as I can see

PN better get a grip on this soon

We may win out but not because of the offensive coaches. But in spite of them

Hail to Pitt

If you or I were the QB behind the PITT OL staring guys like Bookser you and I would have happy feet too!

Pass routes to WRs and RBs who are literally behind or at the LOS is not a recipe for success.

Seeing Aston catch a ball at LOS is mind boggling.

heres an excellent overview with film to demonstrate the issues. Its not just one thing........sometimes its the OL, some times Picket is too antsy, and sometimes hes not accurate.....and others its just poor execution overall. I do think if Picket can improve and become more composed in the pocket things will come around

That second one down, that’s what I’m talking about. Pocket is good except for one guy and he drifts right into him. Just doesn’t make sense. It’s going out of your way to get sacked.
