This team is so bad

This Pitt teams ability to fold like a lawn chair in the final 2 minutes of a close game is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. I mean they make the same mistakes every game that’s close in the last few minutes. They turn the ball over, they can’t defend or make big shots. It’s unbelievable how bad they truly are across the board.

It's not just the last two minutes of the game. Their starts for so many games have been atrocious. How many games have they been down double digits before the 10 minute mark of the first half? Maybe my memory is exaggerating this but it seems like a ton.

that we can't even get guys like Phil to come here and rag on them. Vader_Storm disappeared. Wonder what he thinks?

It's pathetic watching our team play. I must be a masochist. Thankfully only two more games to watch and then wait for football and volleyball season to start
Has anybody heard from Vader Storm? Hope he's genuinely okay. I'm not talking about okay in the sense of ducking out on the message board because the season turned sour. It's just unlike him to disappear during basketball season. I know he loves his hoops.

The only concern now is how the university and a Capel agree to a buyout. This shit show cannot continue.

A chunk up front and the rest spread out over many years and hope a small Carolina school hires Jeff down the road.

Next year will be season 10 of this program being an afterthought. Might as well rip the band aid off and get a new coach who has Pitt looking like a real program in 2026-27.

Vader is pretty notorious for gloating about the 5% of predictions he nails and running away and burying his head in the sand when he's wrong. He stopped posting as soon as this team began sucking. Not a coincidence. He'll be back under a different username to sell you more oceanfront property in Lander, Wyoming in due time.

I assume that there are going to be 2 schools of thought for any school considering a change this offseason due to the impending revenue share money that is hitting next year. Schools on the fence might want to give their coach a chance to see how they can utilize that money to build a better roster, while others will probably use this as the perfect time to make a break. As much as I don’t think Capel can coach, I do think he has shown to be a decent roster builder the last few years. I’d be ok with giving him one more shot with the rev share money at his disposal.

Oh, come on. If Pitt basketball wasn't such an afterthought right now then you'd have SMF and his other handles running a million 'what if' scenarios on how we can get into the tournament, as opposed to going nuts with all of his alt-handles on political topics that you can easily avoid. So, it's not all bad.

I enjoy what smf brings to the table. So he has that going for him which is nice

Also, Pitt79 has gone silent.

Omri the next Kobe? His EYBL stats suggest it.

Agree. I don't recall the poster's handle, but in the last year or so I remember one of our board regulars letting us know that he had Stage IV cancer and was not going to survive. It was, I'm pretty sure, a means of closure for him to say goodbye to his Pantherlair friends

If Vader or Phil or Pitt79 or anyone else has left this mortal world, we'd have a pretty tough time knowing about it unless someone here knew them in real life and reported it. I was lucky to have met Harve74 in person and maintained an offline friendship with him before he passed

I believe his name was Drew.

What year did Harvey pass away?

I think signing up for new handles was made much harder. Haven’t seen Phil or the other person (who frequently targeted Poker) here in a long time.

Drew, that's it. Thanks

Harve passed away in 2019. He was a giant of a man, but a gentle one. One of the most passionate Pitt fans that I have ever known

Very happy to have had plenty of private conversations with Harve

Thanks for sharing.

I was on a hiatus from the board at the time. I definitely remember his posts from years ago though. Seemed like a really good guy.

He sure hyped the hell out of Kante.

I'm not sure he's been on here since the Ohio State game. Things really didn't start to go sideways until FSU.

He hyped up Kante as much as Kithcart and considering he couldn't even sniff the floor in the cupcake games, I figured he would be as big of a bust. But then he won us the Ohio State game so I thought maybe he'd be right for one. But he hasn't played since.

Any big that isn't near the top of the recruiting rankings with all the bluebloods in hot pursuit, plan on that guy being a development player until year 3.

Looks like he posted on the day of the Mississippi State throttling, suggesting that the reason the ACC lost so many games to the SEC was because of the injuries they had.

It's unclear if his post was made before or after the Pitt/Miss St game tipped off. If before, that outcome might have been enough for him to avoid the board.

Forgot about Vader. Yep disappeared after his horrible predictions. Loved to talk ORTQVBCR stats but didn’t know a thing about BB. Couldn’t draw up a BLOB play if his life depended on it (then again JC can’t either) smh

I know this team was a probably a bubble team at best. But they have really really underperfomed this year since conference play. What a waste of a nice OOC resume as well. Unbelievable how they fell apart

Imagine if the team we saw play last night were to tip-off against WVU or OSU now? Ditto with Stanford. I guess that all of us - once we saw the improved level of OOC games and the results - were lulled into a false sense of what to expect once we got into conference play. I look back on the Miss St game and saw then just how un-physical this year's team is. As it's been said ad nauseum, other coaches could watch our films from that blowout game and know just how to defend and beat us

Which is why you shouldn't even waste a scholarship on them. A guy like Kante should have gone to RMU for a few years. Same with Ndiaye.

I'm honestly not sure if HCJC would even be an above-average WPIAL coach. Like I get that he's been around the college game and brings some things to the table. But if we're talking about raw coaching acumen, is he better than the average Joe Pierogi WPIAL coach? I don't know.

We're not wasting scholarships on anyone, though. We don't even have 13 filled if you don't count giving one to a walk-on.

As with football, our path to top tier talent is always going to be more plausible via high school recruiting than it is landing an established, more expensive player through the portal. We should be taking at least three high school recruits every cycle. If they're not developing, like Marlon Barnes, then you can't bring them back that third year. But you still need to take them. You're not going to fill an entire roster with 13 seasoned legit P5 talents who would be willing to split minutes with each other. Even if you devote one or two spots to a goon and some other role player, you have a few left for developmental guys.

I never understood his hyping of so many of these Pitt recruits and portal players and, as it turns out, none of them are capable of playing for a D1 team consistently and well. They can play against the lower level competition or in small spurts, but never enough to win against most ACC teams.

The problem next year unfortunately will be that practically the entire roster will be portal/transfer players and maybe 1 scholarship player. All new faces and none proven to be able to compete at this level.

I wouldn't recruit HS players outside the Top 100, except for a local guy because that guy may stay. I'd recruit ONLY transfers. I'd rather have a 21 year old guy who averaged 8 PPG for Mercyhurst than an 18 year old guy ranked 175th. I'll get that kid in the portal in a couple years.

What if that 205th ranked player ends up being Champagnie? Suppose he transferred after year one (or year two, instead of going pro): you think Pitt is even sniffing that level of talent?

Didn't Vader spend a lot of last year bellyaching about how Blake Hinson was holding the team back? Did I hallucinate that?

You can't take that risk on a guy who there's a 90% chance won't contribute in Year 1. Instead of offering Ndiaye, which I said in real time, was a mistake, why not get a guy who averaged 10 PPG in the MAC?

We couldn't even fill the 13 scholarship allowance. And if we had someone who was absolutely chomping at the bit to come here and we needed to clear space, I'm sure we could have made that happen pretty easily (Barnes, Ndiaye, etc.). It's never been an either/or situation with just being on the roster. No 21-year-old worth his weight in salt is going to be scared away by us brining in a #175 true freshman recruit.

The only things deterring someone who wants to come to Pitt from coming here are a lack of minutes or NIL dollars.
