The Pitt Panthers posted a 74-63 win over previously undefeated LSU on Friday afternoon in the opening round of The Greenbrier Tip-Off. Pitt overcame a halftime deficit, and improved to 6-0 with a convincing second half effort.

What stood out from Pitt’s victory over an SEC opponent? Here are my three biggest takeaways from the game.

Pesky Panthers

The main thing I noticed in Pitt’s biggest win of the season to date is that it must be a pain in the you know what for opposing teams to deal with Jaland Lowe and Ishmael Leggett for 40 minutes, which was the case on Friday, as neither starter left the floor in the team’s 74-63 victory over LSU.

The Panthers’ veteran backcourt was the biggest cause for optimism heading into this season, and it’s showing up through the early portion of the schedule. Both guards are effective on each side of the ball, and their reach on the game was very much present in the takedown of LSU on Friday afternoon.

Leggett and Lowe combined for 43 of Pitt’s 74 points against the Tigers. Both guards played to their strengths, and really the only knock on their performance was the seven combined turnovers. If Pitt can clean up the turnover department, which there is a season’s worth evidence to suggest they will start to limit those, than there is an even higher level this team can achieve with these guards being the driving force.
