. It seems clear that the much maligned Title IX has made a huge difference in our Olympic performance. Afforded opportunities not always available to women in other countries, American woman have won more medals than American men thus far. The results are even more striking in team sports:

Basketball: Both men and women going for gold medals.

Volleyball: women lost in semis; men lost in quarters.

Soccer: women lost in quarters; men didn't qualify for Olympics.

Field hockey: women lost in quarters; men didn't qualify.

Water Polo: women won Gold Medal; men eliminated.

Rowing (8s with coxswain): Women won Gold Medal; men didn't medal.

Gymnastics: Women won Gold Medal; men didn't medal.

I didn't include team sports like fencing or rugby which aren't widely played at the collegiate level, at least as scholarship sports.
