To be fair, Pitt couldn't have picked a better year to rebuild

There are going to be 1000-1500 players in the portal including probably 100 "P5 level." Whether we will get anyone to make a difference is another question but the players will be there.
Agree. We will see what Capel has now. There is no reason why we can't field a team good enough to make the NCAA's next year if Champ returns.

Unless half the team get's fed up with coach and the admin and quits

And its also why not having recruits right now isn't such a big deal. I keep saying this but we will have probably 6-7 new players next season. Capel's job basically depends on whether these new guys, who aren't even necissarily on our radar yet, can play, and play right away. If Champ comes back - a sophomore Femi, Nike, Champ seem like three pretty good starters. Horton and AKC are perfectly fine bench players., Jeffers might be there as well next year. So, we are looking at needing 2 or 3 starters (depending on Champ), and 1-2 bench players who need to play right away. 6 or 7 lottery tickets and Capel needs really like 4 of them to cash. Not impossible.

We've picked each of the last 5 years to rebuild. I'd say it's going swimmingly.

Maybe Capel can be the first guy ever to field a full starting 5 of 1 year portal transfers.

The top transfers want to go to winning programs. they are usually productive players coming from lower levels or from P5 teams that don't win much.

the rest aren't good enough to make much of a difference anywhere else.

Pitt is most attractive as to a transfer coming from a smaller school who isn't getting a lot of interest from the better P5 programs, or to a guy who isn't playing much at a P5 program. Those kind of players won't move the needle at Pitt. Capel doesn't have any momentum or upward trajectory to sell to a transfer or a H.S. recruit. What he has is a shambles of a program with a lot of turnover. You'd be wise to temper your expectations for transfer help.

Bingo!!! Exactly!!

Also what's mind boggling is that, including HC Capel, there are 4 HEAD COACHES sitting on the Pitt sideline. And yet they are fundamentally one of the worst coached basketball teams in the NCAA. What do they do in practice? Do they even practice?

This was the fifth year of our rebuild. Let’s hope it doesn’t end up like the Pirates’ rebuild. After all, this is their 29th year of their 30 year rebuilding program.
Gotta be a record of some kind.

There are 353 NCAA D-1 basketball programs. How many of them have you seen play, to be able to claim that Pitt is fundamentally one of the worst teams? Maybe Pitt is, but my guess is that no one on this board has seen even 25% of these teams play a game.

Why is this year going to be any different for Capel? His recruiting so far has been below average. His coaching is below average. He is more worried about social issues. Why would any high level recruit want to play for him or Pitt right now. Very tough sell.

I kinda believe this is somewhat inaccurate, the word "any" is not the correct word for the situation. He has a three star lightly recruited 6'5" kid that may be drafted.

I’m talking about the trajectory and momentum of his entire program, not of one individual player. Do you think any potential transfer or HS prospect cares that one of Pitt’s players is really good, versus the poor on-court performance of the team, the lack of hope to make the NCAA tournament, and/or the revolving door of personnel in and out of the program?

Sadly I’ve probably seen almost 200 teams play at least one game this year, and that’s probably a conservative estimate. It would’ve been quite a bit more if the non conference schedule hadn’t been so limited.

Pitt’s fundamentals aren’t great, but they definitely don’t stand out to me as amongst the worst I’ve seen this year. It’s certainly nothing like watching the Pirates baserunning blunders over the course of a season.

Yes, only to the point of, as a three star, lightly recruited player, I(the recruit) can get on the NBA radar at Pitt. Take that away and I would tend to agree that "Capel doesn't have any momentum..." but with the focus these kids have on getting to the next level, it is something, IMO.

Well, prospects aren't exactly beating down the door to play for his program, that much is obvious.

But if you listen to some on here they still believe in Capel and are excited about all the impact players Pitt will get from the portal smh.

3 years it hasn't been fine but I'm glad you're still a believer.
This year is different. We needed it to be different.

Good talent is available in our recruiting area. Good talent is available we have had previous contact with.

A ton of good talent is available. We have playing time available.

if we don’t do fine, it will be. An epic fail.

No excuses.

This year is different.

I understand it will be difficult, but I am not ready to count out the possibility that HCJC can bring in a decent group, and mold them into a program on the rise. With the transfer portal and all, if it isn't happening come next March, it isn't happening.

I’m not ready to give up on Capel quite yet, but I’m getting there. Programs aren’t built overnight but after 3 years we should be better, more consistent, steadily improving and more stable than we are. I have not been impressed with the coaching, or the recruiting.
