Is he running the risk of becoming the next Shamiel Stevenson or Malik Ellison? He looks so much worse this year. All 3 of the sophomores look worse. I don't understand.

I'd start

PG - Johnson
SG - Murphy
SF - McGowens
PF - Hamilton (help with rebounding)
C - Brown

Rotate Brown, Hamilton, Champagnie at the 4/5 along with working Coulibaly in there.

I know I took some heat in the previous post about Ezeakudo but I'm not sure McGowens is who we want playing the backup point. Its like we arent even running an offense when he's in. He's not an instinctive PG. It was maddening to me that he ran the point and Johnson the 2 for a lot of possessions vs FSU. In any event, with Johnson and McGowens to attack defenses, you really need Murphy instead of Toney in there to spread the defense and make 3s off of kick outs. Which is why I ask if we are going to end up seeing a very reduced role for Toney? That's what it seems so far.

I think it's premature to write off Toney, but over the first two games every time he touches the ball he appears to be in a rush to make a play. He just needs to calm down and focus on his strengths which are defense and rebounding (presumably) and get his points off second chances.

Its early but it's hard to see anything positive in his offense.
Looks to lack confidence. Doesn't seem to grasp that side of the ball at all.
If this keeps up, I dont see him being on the team next year.
Offense in general is rough.
The only bright spots have been Murphy & Brown.
I believe Drumgoole & Champagnie will improve and be better all season, but this team hasn't been very team like yet.
The sophomores are way too predictable right now.
JC needs to show what he's made of.

Toney isn’t playing because of his offense

It's early, but his shots haven't even been close. There's no way he's as bad in practice as he is in games because Capel wouldn't be using him. Hopefully he's able to get it together and start playing better. It's only game 2.

He’s our best rebounder and best defensive player able to guard 1-4.
He’s going to get minutes

He’s awful guarding P5 4s, never boxes out or clears a body, and had lower offensive and defensive rebounding rates than Terrell Brown last year.

He’s by far their best perimeter defender but doesn’t actually bring much besides that if he isn’t scoring. If he’s your 3rd option as a rebounder that’s fine but he should be nowhere near the 4 spot and they shouldn’t be making lineup decisions based on who the best tertiary rebounder is.

Agreed. He looks nice on the wing/perimeter defending and he's got some good hops and strong hands which are leading to a decent number of rebounds.

His problem is that he's a liability on offense. And not just a liability but he's so bad on offense that he doesn't really compensate for his above-average defensive game. Don't think he's made a shot from the field all year? But until Drumgoole and/or Champagnie start making some shots, Toney will be out there.

It's not like this is new to us. We discussed this over and over on here
during the off season. I actually like a lot about him. He's a great athlete,
tough as nails, and can really rebound given his height.
The problem is he's a 3, not a 4 and is exposed when he's our second
big (and he's NOT a big) on the floor. He's probably going to get reduced
minutes, but offensively if he slows his game down, and concentrates
on drives and put backs he can help this team. I'm hoping Capel can
get him to see where he's an asset, and where he hurts the team and
thus adjust his game accordingly. I expect Champagnie to pass him up.
Let's not forget...Capel is a good guy and isn't going to just throw a guy
who was so valuable last year, under the proverbial bus.
