U of Minnesota stood its ground, and the players have now buckled

The police disagree with you.
Never said they were charged with a crime or that they should be jailed. Lack of sufficient evidence for prosecution kept them out of jail.

But they have no inherent right to remain on the football team.

They lined up and one by one penetrated a drunk and barely conscious girl. This is by their OWN admission. Their defense was that she consented by never saying "no".

That's conduct that gives the U full grounds to remove them from the football team, even if the legal system failed.

Again, I hope you have no daughters... or sons for that matter.

Dude, did you even read about this? There were videos, the police determined the girl was lucid and conscious, and did not object.

Maybe we should suspend any football player that has consensual sex?

Get this through your heads, a consensual gangbang is not illegal. You might find it morally disagreeable, but the university had absolutely no grounds to suspend these kids.

This will end very ugly for the university.

The university is not the law! The university in this case is defending its reputation and decency.

It wasn't about sex. It was about conduct that cannot be condoned. Hell, if they wanted, they could simply pull a scholarship.

I completely disagree with you here. A gangbang is not illegal, and I feel the university is horrendously out of line.

Higher standard at the university than general public. I applaud them for sticking to their guns and making a statement that such behavior isn't acceptable. What do you think would happen if Pitt found out that such activities were occurring in one of its dorms? Suspensions would probably be the minimum.

You can get away with a lot in college, especially if you are a football player. There is definitely a line and they crossed it by a mile.

Skipping class is not illegal, either. Neither are missing practice, or showing up late for a team meeting. Yet schools regularly discipline players for these violations of team rules. This is not about legality, it is about the university deciding that it will not condone the behavior of these players.

And the POLICE determined it was consensual. They had videos that said she was aware of what was going on and did not object.

So you think 10 guys taking their turns with a girl is OK? I'm no prude but that is definitely abnormal behavior, especially when you have a higher standard to adhere to as a representative of the school.

The videos were from before and after, not during.

And 10 guys lining up to one-by-one have their way with a drunk girl at a party is a far cry from a football player having consensual sex with a sober girl.

And the police said they couldn't determine if she was drunk or not, so they didn't have enough evidence to charge them.

Players can be suspended from the team for missing a practice.
They can be suspended from the team for cheating on a test.
They can be suspended from the team for missing classes.

They can certainly be suspended for participating in the actions these 10 did. Hell, half of them were drinking themselves and underage... which is grounds in and of itself to suspend them if the school so desired.

They have no inherent right to play football.

And their 75 teammates have no guarantee of retaining their scholarships if they boycott football.... which they finally realized and saw the light.

What do you think happens if the Steelers found 10 of its players involved in the same activity, consensual or otherwise? I'm willing to bet the less important guys are cut and the others are suspended. Look at what happened to Rothlisberger in Georgia...similar activity that may or may not have been consensual. There are morals clauses in college and the NFL. If you can't adhere to these pretty common sense rules than you don't deserve a scholarship, plain and simple.

If I'm Minnesota I'm making these 10 players jump through numerous hoops if they want to play there again. Take some sexual assault classes, perform some community service, etc... Make the earn their way back, if they get to retain their scholarship.

It's 2016, there are no morals anymore.

Men and women don't act like adults. Going against what is socially or morally correct is the new norm. Stop thinking about how you were raised, what you would have done in the situation and realize that kids of today do not and will not be judged by those standards. I don't agree with it, but it is what it is.

The second we start normalizing this kind of behavior we are f@&ked, if we aren't already.

So Minnesota should just shrug their shoulders and say kids will be kids?

Minnesota should say no law was broken. Punish the kids as it wishes and move on. The other players have the right to react as they wish. I personally don't pay attention to this stuff anymore. We live in a ****ed up world with a lot of sick and twisted individuals. People don't have families, parents, religion anything anymore. I can only control what happens in my house. I ignore this crap. I don't get all the outrage. It happens every day anymore

I'm not outraged, I'm saddened that somewhere along the way these 10 kids thought this kind of behavior was OK. Its sad that a college has to be the one to impose morals where their families obviously failed. As a father of two girls I certainly hope some standards remain by the time they head off on their own.

Just because something isn't illegal doesn't mean it's right. Just because charges were not brought doesn't mean nothing wrong was done. There are authorities other than law enforcement. My boss isn't a cop but I still have to go by his rules. That's life. That's what whiny, snot nosed millenials don't seem to be able to cope with.

Skipping class or being late for practice arent illegal either. Have players ever been suspended for that?

The players were acting and talking like a union. College athletes as a Union has already been tested and failed. They should understand and respect who the authority is within the hierarchy if the University. If they find it intolerable they can always quit the team, ask to be released from scholarship and transfer to another school.

Your best bet us to show this to your daughters and educate and introduce them to fear in hope that they won't be in that situation. Know that most of these athletes come from inner cities with broken homes and no morals. Don't expect them to change anytime soon.

we are getting away from the actual topic here and that is of the protest.. The school didn't give into the players.. this was important and a good move IMo..

I don't think they really had a choice. Relenting to the players would have set a bad standard.
