Their donors may have stepped up to close the gap with Pitt's offer.

All from twitter world, but they seem to trust this more than some of the others:

It was obvious that he had been waiting to.allow UConn to up their offer.

It's starting to get more and more legs and others are starting to report it now as well...

FWIW, uconn fans are saying the a dime back blog is reasonably trustworthy. It's not trending our way panther fans

How is this surprising? He's favored them for years.

It's not surprising at all. This was discussed last week how he preferred to stay in the region. And UConn, to what should be no one's surprise, does seem as though they were able to match Pitt, or come close enough.

The sun doesn't rise and set on Hurley, which I've said way before this got hot. We'll see how this plays out. But it appears we whiffed on our number one.

I'm having a hard time believing UConn was able to pull this off, they're a mess financially.

Plus, they'll probably have to pay Ollie almost $11 million and they might be hit with sanctions (hopefully they are).

-So the deal was finalized at midnight? on a Wednesday night? Whether he is going to Uconn or not, these are some of the dumbest tweets Ive ever read.

We don't know for sure if this is real, but you think because the tweet broke news of something at 11:25pm that the actual thing happened at 11:25?

UConn has boosters too, and more of them.

UConn's donors helped out.

-It just doesnt go crickets the whole day and then earth shattering news is broken out of nowhere at midnight. It was rumored, said, however you want to put it, Hurley was supposed to have a decision today or early tomorrow. This guy wants cred on a twitter account for being the 1st to say it. A guess from nothing.

-That doesnt say who Hurley picks. And Im at the point to move on. He had his money on the table. And I said to revoke it if he didnt take it when offered. Only problem is, I dont think we have a backup plan like I said we should have if he should not choose us. Regardless of who Hurley chooses, both these sources are worthless imo

It will be confirmed or refuted soon enough. In any case, I'm happy to move on from this drama. There are many coaches out there for that price that can be just as good, and all should be substantial upgrades from what we've had the last two years.

Bed time.

If this is all true, Pitt really gave UConn time to come up with the money... Hurley just had a preference for the region and a few more connections to the UConn program.

I'm so glad they got left out of the ACC and I hope they have to drop football. Lmao

This is how the college athletic world works. If they want it badly enough the boosters will step up.

Not stay away from the program and let the school go into debt like Pitt fans think.

A few of us have been saying that for weeks that uconn is not broke. They have strong booster support.

This isn't the end of the world. Most knew this was the outcome. I still feel Pitt will get a good coach. This is how these things work. Seems though Pitt is willing to put the financial commitment for the right guy this go around. Just hope the fans support him.

If true, UConn probably overpaid because Hurley was never coming here and would likely have signed for less. Also, unless UConn gets into the Big East Hurley is probably not staying there longer term anyway.

Whether or not there is a good coaches out there still or Hurley prefered the region or whatever other spin we want to put on it, it at least to people outside of Pittburgh (and some in) will appear to be business as usual for Pitt.

When this process first started it appeared that Pitt would be in a strong position to grab one of Hurley, Matta, or Crean. Now none are likely. Adding insult to injury a coach that has a better resume then all of them falls in our lap and we don’t want it. Meanwhile, the whole team looks likely to transfer......

I wish I could say I was being dramatic but these are just facts.....

If they could somehow take this money and get a good, sitting, ncaa coach I’d applaud them, but I honestly don’t see that happening either.

Pitt never had any real interest in Crean and the Matta interview was kicking the tires to see if he was able to coach. Both were done while Hurley was still coaching.

The only facts we know right now are hurley was the #1 target and Pitt went hard even though it was an uphill battle and Pitt has bumped up their financial support for this hire.

Everything else is fan and message board chatter.

Hurley isn't the end of the world.

The end of the world comes when Pitt slowly carries out its search and lets several more dominos fall against us.

Time is not on our side and apparently money won't save us.

Speed and decisiveness is what will stop the bleeding.

Yep. Let's just take the first guy that will say yes.

Keep in mind, it could also be someone on Hurley's side issuing rumors to get Pitt to up their bid, prior to tomorrow. That's A LOT of $$$ for boosters to agree to cover for over years in a few short days. It doesn't sound right.

I guess we'll know tomorrow morning:

A) If he announces for UConn and the details are released, then it was real.

B) If he announces for UConn and no financial details are released, then it was a rumor to get more $$$ out of Pitt and he went to UConn for less.

C) If he doesn't announce for UConn, then it was all a smokescreen.

Losing Hurley is Not the end of the world. There are still plenty of very good and possibly better options out there. (Musselman and Oats)

However the bottom line is Pitt has to get someone very credible. I’m sorry but Schmidt and Willard don’t move the needle for me

I’d also say if this drags on past the weekend my sense is This will not end well I’m still hopeful at this point though

Uconn will have their deal details public as a state university

Both Hurley and Pitt know that Pitt will not go higher.

Donors stepped up for UConn. If this is true and Pitt's offer that was reported true, he still took less to go to UConn. So he wanted to go to UConn over Pitt.

Pitt's offer was more than fair and generous for Hurley and his resume. UConn's donors stepped up.

For Pitt, I have, and always have lumped Nate Oats in with the same category as Hurley. Offer him $2.5-2.8 million. Or Musselman the same contract you offered Hurley. Both would be fine.

But.....I would not go higher in attempt for Hurley, he doesn't want to be here. If I am Pitt, you want to get some donor money together for a super offer, I wouldn't do this publicly, but put together a package and dial the phone number who's area code is 859. Can't hurt. And he would at least want to be here, if the deal could be struck. But that likely is way out of our pricing range.

So offer Oats. Or Musselman. And let's move on and get this over before everyone else has a chance to give people more money.

Pretty confident Hurley or Musselman would do well here, but my gut says Oats the best fit ( of the rumored people) from the beginning all things considered. But have no clue even if interested. Theres gonna be more movement in the next couple weeks which might free up someone out of the blue though.

Can't get much more decisive, then ponying up for coach It Rhode Island, to make him one of the top 15 paid coaches in the NCAA basketball community.

Speed, they had the offer in front of him within 24 hours of his team getting bumped from the NCAA tournament.

Please don't sit and talk s@@@ on someone else. Wasn't it you who "Broke" news the other night from some guy you never hears about on the Rhode Island message board?

Look Uconn was going to find a way to get the money. No one knows the offer that Pitt made, but I would have given a take it or leave it offer on the table. Similar to what NFL teams do with their free agents. Once they walk out the door offer is off the table.

I still have the utmost respect with AD Lyke. I am glad there have been little info leaked up until now
