Recent NFL moves could directly benefit UNLV, San Diego State, and the Pac 12.

The Pac 12, with a struggling network should look to add 2 huge markets with UNLV, and the new stadium they will share with the Raiders and San Diego State now that there is a giant market just sitting there without an NFL or Power 5 NCAA team.

The NFL moving out of San Diego has got to make the Aztecs look mighty attractive right about now. A city of that size that only has 1 major pro sports team. Their basketball team has capitalized and draws extremely well and has turned into a very strong program.

This is all about TV ratings and I'd be pretty surprised if UNLV and SDSU didn't find themselves in the P12 or Big 12 soon.

That would leave the Mountain West at 10 for football, which is fine because they can do a Round Robin and have a title game. For basketball, they'd lose 2 strong programs so I predict they backfill with Gonzaga, Wichita State, and BYU in a ND/ACC-like deal (5 football games vs MWC schools).

I see Central Time Zone Teams to expand Pac-12 Channel Viewership, but if they want to stay all Western Time Zone another California School makes sense for location, but not adding a New State Market, but UNLV will do it.

OU still upset over No Expansion, but everyone's eye is on CFB Committee possible expansion of the Playoffs. If it goes to 6 and 8 Teams OU will be happy because easier path to CFB NCS Playoffs.

Two Outside Influences Developing:

1. FCC will be Expanding Internet Business Opportunities over Cable Protections with New FCC Chairman.

Big Changes Coming To FCC Under New Chairman Ajit Pai:
A report from Multichannel News last week also said the new president's team is eyeing a massive overhaul of the FCC. The changes could shift many of their efforts on consumer protection handed off to the Federal Trade Commission.

2. CFB is Heading Towards General Managers Positions More Influence:
Coaches still run the show, but off-field staffers are growing more important and powerful by the year.......
Not anymore. In an age when college football staff sizes are exploding, Dudek is an original. In fact, former Cleveland Browns GM Phil Savage called him just that -- college football's first general manager. Dudek is responsible for everything from recruiting to roster management to being the NFL liaison and the face of the program. On National Signing Day, he is up three hours before the 7 a.m. MT start of the school's streaming announcement show to pluck letters of intent off the fax.

This has been discussed in town ever since the stadium plans came into fruition. Most think the Big 12 is a much more likely destination for UNLV, and there have already been rumors about the Big 12 holding their conference title game at the new stadium as soon as it's ready. The stadium authority has already hired people charged with bringing a Super Bowl to Las Vegas ASAP, perhaps even as a permanent site.

Given his proclivity for soccer I'm surprised SMF missed this one, but it came out yesterday that there are talks about San Diego being awarded an MLS franchise, where they would be co-tenants with San Diego St after massive renovations to Qualcomm.

They have been talking about a San Diego MLS team for years. There are a dozen cities talking about adding a team. The MLS LOVES big towns with no NFL teams so when the Rams left, they put St. Louis on the front-burner and I'd expect San Diego to get more attention. The biggest issue would be the stadium. MLS is only going to right-sized stadiums. They arent going to let an MLS team play at Qualcomm unless its greatly reduced.

San Diego also has the issue that they are sandwiched between 2 LA MLS teams and Tijuana FC 20 miles down the road. And most soccer fans in San Diego are Liga MX fans.

By the way, who has been saying a joint college football/MLS stadium could make sense?

I have no idea why the Big 12 would look west when everyone was pretty sure the TV guys were pushing for expansion to get more airtime in the east. I can't imagine them wanting one or two more isolated schools.
