UPMC and Pitt marketing idea

UPMC sponsors Pitt athletics all over the place. The UPMC logos all over the arenas and press conferences aren't free.

Naming rights were already acquired to the Pete, by, you know, John and Gertrude Petersen.
relax francis, not everything has to be a debate. that was my point. We've already gotten more than our fair share with the UPMC partnership..

Actually, Pitt never sold the naming rights. The Petersens gave a large $10 million donation, didn't ask for anything. Then a few weeks/months later, Steve Pederson surprised them when he said they were naming the building after them.

Pitt should sell the naming rights and UPMC should "overpay" for them. As a non-profit, their revenue has to be spent. So pay Pitt half a billion for naming rights.

And yet, plenty of companies do it.

But you drive a hard bargain. So in an effort to have just 1 brand, they should call it the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in blue and gold everywhere. Be who you are. Maybe even put a Narduzzi statue out front.
Most companies do not, the smart ones do not, and most of the ones with separate brands that you cited resulted from mergers of two existing brands with strong regional identities (e.g., Hardee's and Carl's Jr were two different brands in two different regions that merged, same with Rally's and Checkers).

I personally would have left the old signs with the seal up on the Oakland-Pitt campus UPMC facilities, but that is just because I am a Pitt homer.

Which is why it makes perfect sense when UPMC buys up out-of-area hospitals to brand it as UPMC. Like UPMC Hamot in Erie. You want to keep the old brand but put it under the UPMC umbrella. If they buy a made-up Reading Hospital, call it UPMC Reading. But everything in SWPA should be the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in blue and gold. Maybe even have the staff wear Oakland Zoo shirts as their uniform.

I'm not debating, I'm providing additional facts for many individuals that previously and continue to claim UPMC doesn't support Pitt or Pitt athletics. People say that, and ignore all the UPMC logos and signage plastered all over the place.

Maybe they could sell naming rights along the lines of "UPMC Court at the Petersen Events Center," or something corny like that.

There are not two existing health care brands.

There are not two existing health care brands.

There's also not one existing university Healthcare system that is too shy to afraid to use their own name. Heck, even WVU uses their own name. If that were me, I'd use anything but. Call it Pinnacle Health or Excellence Health or something but not WVU. Imagine going to WVU Hospital for a major surgery?

What incentive do they have to do that?
The way I see it, their brand is promoted on a national stage through Pitt athletics, including their digital field ads during football games. Pitt losing its spot within major collegiate sports would mean a lot less exposure for them.

Yeah, those kids "from Monessen" live in Rostraver Township but let's not pretend that Ringgold didn't steal a D1 QB from BV.
Oh, I remember that well. Ran into him at Mario's in the Southside in the late 90's. We didn't know each other well, but well enough for him to remember me. He is still upset about the way he was treated when he came home for a basketball game. :) Not really. It didn't come up at all. We only talked for about 10 minutes, mostly me asking questions about his work. But I wanted to bring it up. That was a brutal night back in '86.

They should rename UPMC to The Pitt, using script! Then they can have The Pitt Monroeville. The Pitt Mckeesport, etc.

Then the Panther Pitt can be sponsored by The Pitt. So it would be The Pitt Panther Pitt. Triple entendre.

it probably has to do with PA having more schools offering basketball then football.

It's not 100% but whatever class you are in football, you're going to be bumped up 1 for football.

I understand that but what it means is that Ringgold, Uniontown, AG, LH are very large 4A football schools and Peters, BP, CV, SF are very small 5A football schools. I just don't see the populations of those areas being remotely close. And Ringgold, Uniontown, and LH have actually moved up to 5A. They're growing??? I am half-joking but maybe these areas are seeing a growth due to affordable housing. Instead of spending 800K in Peters, spend 300K in Uniontown

But I'm guessing you're referring to Scott zolak who's dad was the AD at Ringgold at the time. Getting plucked from Belle Vernon 40 years ago
Lot more to that story but yes. I'm only kidding about being stolen or anything. He famously gave a radio interview saying that BVA wasn't good enough and it was going to hurt his recruiting. To say that things were strained is a bit of an understatement.

I had forgotten about the Zolak interview. That really did stir the pot.

Yeah. He always had a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Fun fact, he's still known as "Bucket Head" up in Boston. Dude has a big head and he once got a bucket stuck on his head at a party. He's done well for himself, though. Was a shame about Anselmino. I don't think he liked be much but he was apparently a pretty good guy.
