USA Netherlands thread

That's like one of those optical illusions that if you look at it real quick it looks one way, but if you take the time to actually look at it looks another.
Nothing interesting about that starting lineup. Other than CCV was very good the other day. But so is Zimmerman in relief.

It's actually the lineup that I would have predicted. If Sargent wasn't going to be able to play and Wright has not played well in his time so far then what else were they going to do up top? I mean I've been arguing for Weah at the nine and Reyna on the right wing, but it's obvious that Burp wasn't going to do that. And going back to Zimmerman is what I expected. He was your first game starter and he's played well.

So..Has Antonee been fairly sloppy with that ball including last game?

Not expecting a long thing since everyone’s watching but his foot appears heavy at times to me. But what do I know? Not much.

Not that unexpected that the US would control possession early with the Dutch looking to counter, but damn did they really have to convert the first opportunity?

Unfortunately there are more casual viewers tuning in, but if this result does hold they all will disappear for four years. Honestly the folks who follow this sport know it would be a tough task for U.S. today but casual watcher doesn’t get why we would be losing.

I think that’s his game to be honest. He can run forever without the ball and sloppy with it. But he’s still valuable to me.

Oh I wasn’t suggesting he’s a bum. Just looked to me he could be a little better with the ball. And even if I’m correct it could just be now. He may be great with it otherwise - I wouldn’t know. Haven’t seen near enough.

Well the Dutch are what the US isn’t. Clinical.

On a separate note, what a brilliant decision to leave Pefok home and bring Ferreira. What a complete waste of space. He has been absolutely terrible and way overmatched.

Not really. The final ball is glaring but they have lots of weaknesses.
The difference is quick decisive ball movement. We aren’t quick enough in possession and The Dutch we’re in their limited possession.

Guess we will be seeing Reyna now. Lol.

Dest just flat footed and staring into space on that last goal. An elite finisher please.

Lazy defense.

Dutch are better coached and know they'll get their opportunities. Just sit back and wait for US to screw up.

And adams lost his man in transition on the other goal.

Only problem with Weah. With Van Dijk and Ake dropping, there won’t be space behind. Certainly it’s Reyna time. But at the 9 I dunno. Haji big and physical on VVD?

Even though I knew he wasn’t coming in, as soon as the announcer said “Yedlin warming up on the sideline” I instantly got angry at Berhalter. Hopefully next cycle we don’t see some of these type guys on the roster.

So after the little story about Dest growing up in Holland but deciding to play for the U.S., the “expert” commentator talked about his match with Dewey Blind, the Dutch LB. He concluded it was a good matchup for Dest because although Blind is very experienced in international play, he is 32 years old and Dest would have a big speed advantage.

Here are Blind’s first half numbers:

So much for “expert” opinions.

Hi. Hockey fan here. We call these fans "Miracle on Ice" fans.

“Unfortunately” this game attracts tens of millions of viewers who don’t ordinarily follow the sport?

I’m one of those. So is just about every friend I have, and we are all tuning in today. So are many millions of viewers across the world.

you’d rather not have us then?

I wonder if the US team feels the same way.

Incidentally, I’m pretty sure all of us soccer philistines understand that the US team is a heavy underdog today. And they have looked every bit the part.

Casual viewer also thinks this is boring with no offense. There’s plenty.

I just watched the second Dutch goal 3 times on replay. It should be enough, standing on its own, to get the coach sacked.

The Dutch took the throw-in about 10m from the US goal with 30 seconds gone in extra time. One minute of extra time to be played. So only 30 seconds left. The US had only 4 players in the box. 4! There was zero time to mount an attack. The only duty is to prevent the Dutch from scoring. When the ball was crossed to Blind, the only other US player in the box was Dest, who was a good 3 or 4m from Blind, who he should have been marking. He also was on the wrong side of him.

For the second time in the half, Dumfries got free from the awful American marking to have a free lane to cross the ball through the box and past the hapless Walker Zimmerman, who apparently doesn’t believe that blocking attempted crosses is part of his job description (spoiler alert: it is!)

It was a truly pathetic display of how not to defend.
