The key word here is "free" ---> as in "free throw", or in the case of the Pat Sajek/Vanna White TV game, "Free Spin". When you get to the "free throw" line in BB, it's just that; a free opportunity to score points with no time off the clock, no one guarding you, no "cost" to you or your team
In Wheel of Fortune, there's a "Free Spin" section on the wheel; when you land on it, you can call out most any letter, but invariably, most contestants ask for a vowel, knowing it would not cost them any $, as it does on a "normal" spin.
E, A, I and O are popular choices, of course ...
Which leads me to last night .... Pitt at the Free Throw line was like a contestant on WOF asking for the letter "U" ... which, in 38 puzzles, may show up about 20 times ....
