Hey Vadar could you do a summary of our 3 recruits. I know you have out a lot about them in the past but I have kind of lost track.

That class is looking pretty sweet with Dior added to it. Would I be wrong in thinking that this would be the best since the late 80s?

Dior wouldn’t be added to it. He was this last recruiting class technically.

He’d be selling low.
He is a wild card. I could see him trying to get paid somewhere. Someone offers him something he is gone in my view. I don’t think he plays at Pitt ever. Does not make sense not trying to play him this year unless Heather wanted it in my view. Maybe the press was something she didn’t want to have from what he was accused of. Ur banking on him staying loyal when ur going to have all types of voices in his ears and I don’t think many of them are good ones.

You mean the same voices that resulted in him being in Oakland? He’ll have the same amount of PT run experience at the beginning of next year as he had coming out of prep. Why would there be money this coming summer and not last summer? His shot will come after demonstrating his maturity for a year at Pitt. Then he gone.

What P6 school is going to pay for him at this point and why wouldn't they have done so last May or June when he was less "damaged?"

You obviously don't know how he got here

@BballinsiderfromPitt I know you’ve been kinda down on the incoming recruiting class (maybe down isn’t the right word, but you’ve repeatedly said no difference makers). But it seems like Lowe and Carrington are playing really well right now.

Anything you’re seeing prompting you to reevaluate or do you still see this group lacking a freshman impact player?

Part of the reason this group has been mildly successful, the group at pSU has been successful and other places… lots of guys with their last opportunity who are old. I don’t think completely changing the dynamic of that with possibly higher upside guys is the move.

Not quite the same thing but I make fun of my pSU football friends for them rolling with True Sophomore allar next year while Fickell is rolling out a 6th year senior who threw for 70 TDs and 7k yards in year one. It seems like some coaches like to sell the far off mirage of future success.

Cliff Notes Version

Carrington

Lethal scorer in the midrage and pull up jumper. Good 3 point shooter. Respectable handle and dribble penetration but likes to go to work from the midrange out and easily makes shots off the bounce. He creates his own offense. Was also a backup point guard in AAU and did ok there, he has some playmaking ability / passing ability that is underrated. Rebounds well for his size. Consistent production in most facets of the game on a nightly basis with a few off shooting nights. Shot selection has improved but he needs to continue to work on shooting the best shot possible. Has the ability to make extremely difficult shots against Elite defenders from pullups and fadeways, but sometimes this leads to poor shot selection. Has proven the ability to take games over against high level teams and players. Good height around 6'5-6'6, big wingspan, plus defender. Sometimes makes poor decisions trying to make tight passes, which was a big chunk of his turnover problem issues over the summer. Has significant upside and has significantly improved in the last 9 months. A legit Top 60 talent Nationally, and he still might be underrated at that. He is a year young for his recruiting class.

Lowe

A true point guard and first and foremost, he is a leader on the floor and in the locker room. He gets his teammates on the same page, controls and dictates the tempo on the floor, and makes adjustments from pushing the fast break to running the half court. Has shown 3 level scoring ability. Streaky 3 point shooter, but makes more than enough to keep the defense honest and has the ability to get hot. He just needs better consistency. Reads the floor well, passes well, beats traps and pressure well, pushes the basketball into the paint and can finish with both hands. He loves the floater and midrange and will attack in transition. He has shown in the EYBL, Peach Jam, and in high school, he can be deadly in the PnR and if surrounded by shooters can provide significant problems to high level defenses. Has shown the ability to take games completely over on offense like Carrington. His Defense is ok, he creates enough steals on his own, but needs better foot speed, recovery, and needs to do a better job both stopping dribble penetration and closing on 3 point shooters where sometimes he looks sleepy doing so. He is ok rebounding the ball, but would like to see him rebound better against better teams. John Lucas is his godfather, and if he makes some more improvements to his 3 point shot, he can be a John Lucas III type in college. Looks like a legit Top 60-75 player right now.

Barnes

Rating is incomplete with the missed time he has had with injuries. He's mostly been a 3 point specialist in the past while providing decent defense. Good height and athletic ability to work with at 6'6, but did not see the breakout I was hoping for like with Carrington. His jumper is smooth, has some ability to put the ball on the floor, but would like to see him tighten the handle, work on his foot speed and explosion on his first step. Respectable passer. Has good nights and bad nights offensively, and seems to disappear in games or deflect to others on offense. Would like to see him try to assert himself more on offense. Would like to see him have more killer instinct to take games over like Carrington and Lowe.

Miller was in 87 class with Jason Matthews, the local city league kid Darrell’s Porter, that went on to coach Duquesne and the kid from Philly that was prop 48. His high school nickname was The Messiah. He was only 6’6 but played with his back to the hoop. No flash but plenty of production. Sorry can’t remember his name. Too old. There might have been a fifth player.

You have VIOLATED the concept of "Cliff Notes". Not even DT is that wordy.
You'll hear from my attorney.....maybe Edgar's last win??

Bobby Martin, too. Brian Shorter was the prize. Cal hid him in that Oak Hill joint.

Shorter committed to Pitt his jr year and if I remember he was rated top 5 in his class . Was a prop 48 his freshman year . Had he been eligible Pitt wins the national championship. Was a beast at 6’5” . Those were the Golden Panther years .

Gore came in with Smith .

I would’ve settled with Brookin staying eligible that season over Shorter.

Guys who could‘ve been on that 1987-88 Pitt team: Goodson, Brookin, Shorter, the underrated, Keith Gatling, and Junie Lewis.

Thanks. Couldn’t remember that. I first saw him at the Dapper Dan Classic in April 87 with Miller. They had a pre game dunking contest that he was in. Totally not his game. He had no fancy dunks. The crowd was disappointed but did not understand his game. The other thing about that night was I went into the old Civic Arena with not a spec of snow. Came out 2.5 hours later and there was literally a foot of snow. What should have been an hour and thirty minute drive home took nearly 3. Going 40 mph on the TP following the red brakes lights of a truck. I thought if he goes over a cliff I’m going with him. Glad to get home to my wife and 10 month old son. Sorry, probably more than anyone cares to know. Haha.

Great story Somerset. My one and only roundball classic featured a young Shaquille O’Neal. Man amongst boys.

Saw first Roundball with Wuycik, Karl and Previs. Second with Weber, Howard, Rose, King and Antigua. Needless to say quite a few more. In its day it was the One and Only.
