Jeff Capel quotes:

On Amadasun

“Max is a fast rising post prospect with a great combination of size and athleticism”, said Capel. “ He has the ability to be a high level shot blocker and rebounder. We have been impressed with how quickly his offensive skills have developed in the past year and like the energy and effort he plays with. Max has the opportunity to be another outstanding Pitt Panther to come out of New York City”

On Collier

“We are excited about the versatility and explosiveness in Noah’s game”, said Capel. “He has the ability to guard multiple positions on the floor and possesses a balanced offensive skill set. Noah comes from a terrific program at the Westtown School and has developed winning habits throughout his high school career”

On Jeffress

“Will is a versatile player with big upside at 16 years old”, said Capel. “He comes from a terrific family and will be a great representative of the University of Pittsburgh in all areas. We are excited to add him to our program and believe he will fit in nicely with our core group of players as well as the rest of our incoming class”

On John Hugley

“John is a skilled forward with excellent size and a well-rounded offensive game”, said Capel. “He has very good footwork on the block as well as a nice shooting touch from the perimeter. We really like the work ethic, toughness, and commitment to the game John has shown since we began recruiting him. John has the opportunity to make an immediate impact in our program

On Femi Odukale

“Femi displaced outstanding versatility, talent, toughness, and competitiveness during an outstanding post-grad season”, said Capel. “We are excited to add him to our recruiting class and look forward to having him in our program. He is mentally and physically mature and will have an opportunity to come in and make an immediate impact next season

A few thoughts on next year’s roster.

I think there is a very good chance Ithiel Horton leads the team in total minutes played, upwards of 34 minutes per game, with just about all of them coming at the 2. Corey Evans of rivals.com national recruiting reiterated yesterday what Jeff Capel and I have been saying. Horton was the best player of everyone in the practices last year and Corey further indicated he spent time in the open Pitt gyms watching them practice (Corey also has Horton as the top incoming player in the entire ACC for all transfers available). The writing was on the wall for Mcgowens and Murphy with regards to playing time. It should surprise no one if Horton leads the entire team in scoring.

Of the 5 incoming new players, it is highlighted above in bold that the 2 incoming players expected to make “immediate” impacts per Jeff Capel’s own words, Hugley and Odukale. I currently have Hugley at 20 minutes per game and Odukale at 18 in the preseason right now, with Odukale playing both point and point forward. All along I thought these 2 were the most ready and I currently maintain that. I have Jeffress at 15 minutes per game, the bulk of them coming at the 3 with limited minutes at the 2. I think Jeffress shooting ability is being significantly underrated as he made large strides with his 3-point shooting in the last year. Odukale turning 20 years old next winter also has him much more experienced and ready.

This recruiting class is currently the best recruiting class of incoming talent going all the way back to 2007 in my opinion and I don’t think its remotely close (with Horton) regardless of what the final national recruiting rankings say. I think this incoming class is a “major” haul of quality players.

On the national level, the 2020 class is a power class with far more talent and depth nationally than either the 2019 or 2021 classes. Not all class years are created equal with talent.

At this junction, I still am most intrigued by Odukale’s "potential" as a 6’5 point with a 6’11 wingspan who has arguably the highest upside of anyone on the roster in terms of “potential”. I think he is ready right now as he severely upgrades our teams passing ability with John Hugley. I am also intrigued by the upside of Noah Collier who is close to 6’9 with his athletic ability. While I do consider Collier to still be in the development state especially on offense where I consider him fairly raw, I think he will be a nice addition in our 2-3 zone defense and zone trap defensive packages which is what he played at Westtown. Noah should develop nicely with a few years in the program while he works on his game and his strength.

I would also reiterate that Pitt was and still is a major contender for Adama Sanogo. Jeff Capel has recruited Sanogo for over 18 months now. We offered Sanogo before any of the other P6 offers on the table. Seton Hall was the 2nd, Nebraska the 3rd, Uconn a very distant 4th. Andrew Slater reiterated that Pitt is a major contender if you are not taking my word for it. His recruitment should still be ongoing heading into summer.

Without even seeing the schedule next year, I think Pitt is a major contender for 20+ wins and am ready to say that right now assuming the full season is played out. I think Jeff Capel did a spectacular job with addressing our team’s weaknesses including 3 point shooting, rebounding, versatility, and depth. I also think the overall teams “toughness” is going to be taken up multiple notches with additions of Hugley and Odukale, both of which display major "junkyard dog" attitude and toughness on the court. This class with Horton and Jeffress among others is excellent coming into the program and should really elevate our team starting next year.

How many minutes do you have X playing?

Is the Aiken fellow still on the team as a walk-on ? If so is he a point guard or 2 guard ? Also the player from Indiana that was a walk on point guard ? What’s his story ?

Vader do you see Toney playing two this year at all? Supposedly he has asked to play guard more and we may have similar guard depth issues as last year.

Vader what is the fastest land animal?

I have X around 30 minutes per game. I think it will be best served for him and the team to have his minutes around there. I fully expect a lot more depth to be utilized next year with a faster pace and much more aggressive defensive packages. With that said, I think X will be the biggest beneficiary with the addition of Horton to give X better spacing on offense.

I think Pitt's chances to land Sanogo are respectable. I have Seton Hall as the very slight favorite at this moment because he has been at the campus multiple times. That doesnt mean everything as we saw with Earl Timberlake who made multiple trips to both Pitt and SH and ended up choosing Miami. Capel has a long relationship built with Adama and a Pitt coach was at St. Pats almost on a weekly basis for months last fall.

I think putting Toney at the 2 has its possibilities because this team can get very aggressive with trap / press defensive sets with Odukale on the floor as a point forward. Toney is a good transition basketball player and finisher. If we get aggressive on defense, it can certainly happen. The pre-set defense could dictate that to try and get a scoring run going. The press was effective last year when used against multiple acc teams. It will be far better next year and we have the versatility and depth to use it. A press with Toney / Odukale together has the potential to be pretty nasty and effective.

Jeff Capel has a pretty heavy focus on 2's and wings next year. Right now the staff is pretty confident with our point guard position and with Hood-Schifino incoming later on. Here is a list of guys where interest is gaining. We have a lot of guards / wings on the radar in 2021 and are heavily looking back in New York again.

Brandon Weston-6’5 2 guard, wing-Brooklyn, NY

Khalil Brantley-6’1 CG guard-Brooklyn, NY

Jordan Riley- 6’3 SG-Brentwood, NY

Kyle Cuffe Jr- 6’1 CG Blairstown, NJ

Aminu Mohammed- 6’4 2G / W- DC

Sencire Harris-6’3 2 guard- SVSM, Ohio

Malaki Branham-6’4 guard .wing-SVSM, Ohio

Some of these players we have recruited longer than others. The NY'rs know one another and have played against each other. They are also well aware New York is coming back to Pitt. These guys know Champ, Femi, Max, etc.. Brantley and Riley were 1st team All State selections as juniors. We are getting on them at the right time. There is legit interest on both sides with Cuffe.

The more I think about it, the more I have come to believe that the staff thinks that they have their starting point guards set for the next couple of years, whether it comes in the form of Xavier staying all four years in 2020-21 and 2021-22 and Hood-Schifino in 2022-23 and beyond; or Xavier in 2020-21, leaving early, and Hood-Schifino reclassing and starting in 2021-22 and beyond.

Pitt is not going to get elite 4/5 star point guards (see: Jalen Warley) to commit when their path to the starting point guard job is blocked, so they recruited Femi to be the consistent "second" point guard behind those two guys. We lost RJ Davis to UNC because it wasn't abundantly clear that Xavier was leaving after 2019-20 to open the starting job, and also because UNC made the "Femi" pitch to him - to be the consistent second point guard behind whatever one and done they recruit in front of him. But we aren't UNC, and we aren't in a position (yet?) to recruit top-50 point guards to come in with a blocked path to the starting job. So you recruit a guy like Femi to be the multi-year backup point, and fill out the backcourt with combo guard types who are probably primarily off-ball guards but can give you a little bit of ball handling too.

Wasn't Khalil Brantley a 17 year old soph from NC who just made the move to NY a year ago? Do you see much upside given his size and age?

Don't forget about this kid!

Louisville’s Chris Mack just finished speaking with five-star junior Aminu Mohammed over zoom, Mohammed’s guardian Shawn Harmon told @Stockrisers.

He’s also slated to speak with Pittsburgh’s staff this weekend. New team heavily involved.

You are correct, IMO. An analogous issue exists, IMHO, to obstruct any efforts to add a grad transfer point or combo guard for the coming class as "insurance." Any candidate will know they will be behind Johnson and Horton and won't play much unless either becomes injured. Horton will likely get point guard minutes when Johnson is on the bench due to foul trouble or just for a breather and at best the "insurance" guard would at most only get those minutes at the guard spots that Johnson and Horton don't eat up. But, you may say that Murphy got more minutes than that last year--so, why isn't the same amount of minutes still available for a grad transfer guard?

Looking at last years numbers and the incoming recruits, IMHO, answers that objection. Last year the combo of Johnson (33.3), McGowens (33.8) and Murphy (24.5) totaled 91.6 minutes per game. Since there are only 80 minutes available total at the 1 and 2 guard spots this means that at least 10 minutes had to be time when we played a 3-guard lineup. Given the new well regarded recruits at forward (4/3s) and wing (3/2s) (i.e., Collier, Jeffress, Odukale) being added to Toney and Champagnie that "traffic jam" will mean not having those additional 10 minutes that came with having 3-guards on the court together.

IMO, if there are any such lineups used for even less than 10 minutes per game it is likely Odukale will be getting those minutes as he seems to have been recruited to play as an interchangeable 1-2-3 position player.

Therefore, at least IMHO, without decent guaranteed minutes to sell to a grad transfer guard and with some possibility still remaining of filling the remaining open ship with either Sanogo (4-star C) or Mane (likely one and done 5 star G) by September---Capel is going to hold the last ship open until all possibility for landing either Sanogo or Mane is gone. If/when that happens and depending on how late it is, he will either leave it open for next season, give it for one year to a walk-on (Ezeakudo?) or, finally add an "insurance policy" grad transfer guard if anyone worthwhile is available and willing to mostly ride the pine.

Caveat: The cynical would want a grad transfer guard somehow added and then have Capel "run-off" Brown (or Amadasun) if Sanogo decided to commit later. Alternatively, those of the cynical bent would want Capel to "run-off" Drumgoole if Mane decided to commit. They would probably also be fine if both possible potential late commits were added and both a big and Drumgoale were "run off."

Per Jake,

Alabama, Kentucky, Creighton, Pittsburgh, Fresno State, amongst others have reached out to Miami (OH) transfer Nike Sibande, he told @Stockrisers.

The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 13.9 points and six rebounds last season.

Brantley averaged 34 points per game and hit 3 different game winners this year. He ruined Brentwood’s undefeated season when he was up against Jordan Riley earlier this year as he hit the 3 as time expired. He is clutch and steps up in the big moments like Levance Fields with the game on the line. He obviously can score as he was in the Top 15 Nationally in points per game average as a junior. As I said, he was 1st team All State selection in New York as a junior.

Pitt caught 2 very big breaks this winter and many people seem to be missing them including the people responsible for ranking players which is a shame.

Last summer Noah Collier played for team final. Collier was a hair at best above 6’6 a year ago as a power forward. Noah Collier right now is very close to 6’9 and Noah Collier was a 1st Team All State selection in Pennsylvania with Jalen Warley which was just announced. It is true numerous programs stopped recruiting him and backed off including Uconn and Syracuse last summer. Now standing at 6’9 with his athleticism and potential, Pitt is the beneficiary and I would almost guarantee his list of suitors standing at 6’9 would be far longer right now. His late growth spurt didn’t start until last fall. Collier now has far more potential with the size increase. I still think he is raw on offense, but we are talking long term “potential” and he has a lot of it with his height, wingspan, and athletic ability.

The same can be said with Femi Odukale who also had a 3 inch growth spurt. Odukale was about 6’2 at South Shore before Springfield and averaged about 11 points per game. His arms and his body just kept growing and he missed a lot of AAU which kept his exposure way down. Now we are talking 6’5 with a near 7 foot wingspan. This kid was a force this year. Here is a player comparison.

National Prep Player of the Year

Hassan Diarra-4 Star consensus National Top 60-70 player

Team National Rank- #2

Team record-34-3

National Top 150 players on his team- 4

Stats: 15ppg, 5.2 rpb, 4.8 apg, 2.2 stl per game

National Prep Player of the Year runner up

Femi Odukale-unranked

Team National Rank- #11

Team Record-30-7

National Top 150 players on his team-0

Stats- 17.5ppg, 8.2rpg, 8.8 apg, 2.7 steals per game

Femi’s team beat Hassan Diarra’s as they played twice. They both played against the same exact caliber teams and players the entire season. These teams and divisions in prep are loaded with ranked players. As I pointed out previously, Trey Mcgowens went to Hargrave Military Prep who these teams play. Odukale has Mcgowens stats beat across the entire board in Prep this year just like he had Diarra’s stats beat. We have a "potential" star here. As I said, I can’t remember a player having a year over year transformation like Odukale had since Jeff Green from Georgetown. I even highlighted above what Jeff Capel had to say, he thinks Odukale will contribute immediately as a freshmen.

I would reiterate that Odukale has arguably the most raw talent with potential and the highest potential ceiling of any player on next years entire roster.

I don’t really think we’re disagreeing. My point is more that we benefited in a big way from Femi slipping under the radar for as long as he did. Had Femi performed as a senior at South Shore the way he did as a prep school kid, he likely would have had more major conference opportunities as a point guard. It would have been a much tougher sell to get Femi to Pitt as a point guard with Xavier in front of him, rather than have him go to other schools who may have offered him a quicker opportunity to be a starting point guard. With the way things played out with his recruitment, we ended up with a quality point guard prospect to be the second point guard behind Xavier and, later, Hood-Schifino. That’s not any kind of pessimism about Femi or the player he could become, but we absolutely benefited by having him blow up late in the process. I expect him to play quite a bit this year at the point, and develop into a really nice player.

Do you guys think JC throws his hat in on him?

BREAKING: Wake Forest center Olivier Sarr is entering the transfer portal, he tells ESPN.

He plans to apply for a waiver to play immediately next season. The 7-footer was All-ACC after averaging 13.7 PPG and 9.0 RPG.

He is a good player. I am going to guess he ends up at Kentucky or some other elite program.

I'm in the grad transfer guard camp. If Capel gets Sonogo to commit
however I would not want him to run off Brown, Drumgoole, or
Amadason in favor of a guard.
Brown has been faithful to the program. I often cannot stand is play,
but he's stuck it out through some bad times, and he appears to be a
positive teamate. Drumgoole? He had a horrible year, but it may have
been due to his injury. He deserves another chance. Amadason should
not be kicked off, especially at this late date. He commited to Pitt when
Capel needed a big.

No disagreement. A decent grad transfer guard (more talented than Ezeakudo) would be very nice to have. It just doesn't seem to be a realistic possibility at this point in time, IMHO, for the various reasons mentioned.

Hoping Vader is right that Capel believes (and is correct) that Odukale is far better than his rating and will be ready to be an immediate contributor at guard. If Odukale is ready that would go a long way to alleviating guard depth concerns.
