VERY much under the New Stadium radar

This is probably just as stupid but I always thought the best place was on the river before you get under the underpass connecting greenfield and hazel wood. They are developing it into something now. It's literally across from upmc practice facility.

Anyway likely dumb as shit but that riverside hasn't been anything for a long time
It was purchased over 10 years ago, sat on for over a decade. Love that land, river front real estate. They are supposed to be doing something with it soon. Has a weird name, almono I think.

The "T" extension is a BILLION dollar fantasy. An article o B/R carries no water. No way Pgh will build an extension for FB reasons. The "t" should be extended, both to the east & north....but you won't see it with the current leadership. Besides, the HOV lane is a failure on 279. Goofy that public trans is so bad, here.

You're ok with the cost of extending the t?

I think the extension to Oakland would be useful, but there would be real resistance if a surface line went through the Hill. Probably be DOA.
I came to Pgh in 1967, when the East St. Valley residents fought hard & long to stop the Parkway North. It didn't link to I-79 until 1989. The North Hills exploded with growth once that happened....probably 10 years later than it should have been.
The Rooney Tunnel cost over $600 million, was a couple years late....and had no NIMBY obstacles. Anything going east from the Point would face major hurdles, and the State & county might not be on board.......and any connection would be downtown. Nice idea, doubt it will happen.

I think that we should use the money we'd use towards a stadium for making Heinz more accessible and academic/athletic resources. Let the Steelers renovate Heinz as they try to host the Super Bowl and extend the T; that's all we need to do.

There is a certain fantasy about how great parking is at Heinz Field. I have a great spot but I will tell you that all my friends have been scattered over the years. We take turns meeting at different spots and the far away locations take a solid 12 - 15 minutes. Basically it's like walking to McKee Place, N Dithridge or Centre Avenue from the Cathedral of Learning.

Suck it up people.

I park over in the first avenue garage and take the t over. Or I park downtown and walk over. Walking is absolutely not an issue though I will say that the idea of walking up from Oakland to behind the Pete (I feel that is the only feasible spot) would not be something I would want to do. Being stuck in a parking garage for two hours is. Also, if I want a tailgating experience, that isn't happening in Oakland.

yep, something that the next generation might consider more relevant than us.. 20 years, this could be a topic, now? not so much..

Ah...yes they are. It doesn't make it easy but most of the people working in Oakland are leaving at the same time.

No they aren't? You really think doctors, professors, and teachers, a very large majority of the commuters, all have the same schedule???

No, actually that would be a great spot land wise. Parking is still an issue sever ever you go. It isn't on campus though, so you'd still have a lot of complaints.

They'd pretty much have to bring it up by Bigelow and circumvent the Hill District. Then find a way to get it from Baum to central Oakland. At that point, it's just the East Busway on rails.

15 years was the halfway point of three rivers stadium....

And Three Rivers Stadium was a multi use facility that didn't suit either tenant. Heinz Field is a football field first and foremost. PNC Park is a baseball field only. There is a big difference between Three Rivers Stadium and Heinz Field/PNC Park.

I find it absolutely appalling that we don't have a rail line connecting Downtown and Oakland. Once that line would gt built it opens up linking Oakland with Hazelwood and beyond. No politician will touch it because it would likely require a tax of some sort.

there are articles about this, a big loop if you will. The idea is out there, the need is justified.. it's just that little price tag that comes with it.. If you google it, studies galore..

We only have the Amtrak horror that leaves in the middle of the night...at least it used to. There was a commuter train that went to Greensburg?? Through McKeesport & Monroeville, I think. Gone about 30 years. Not used enough. I guess the tunnel is a treat for them?? I've often said that the 2 worst things about Pgh are the transit systems and the inability to provide a really good hoagie, (not even close.)

You seriously don't see the difference?
nope...100 yard field and seats..pretty sure if you had told someone in 1985 that three rivers would be gone in 15 years they would have called you nuts....you have no idea what the flavor of the day will be in 2031 in regards to sports spectator facilities. Hell, Heinz may be a horrible venue for the new virtual reality pod suites that became all the rage in 2027 ...In fact I'd say that there is probably about a 15% chance that college and professional football in anything close to its present form will even exist...Hard to envision a 70K stadium for the Pittsburgh Flag Football Steelers...

Actually, Sophie masloff in 1991, only 21 years after 3 rivers was opened, was proposing a new stadium. I remember going up three rivers as a kid and thinking it looked old already.

Heinz was built specifically for football. Three rivers not.

One word solution- subterranean

Z2 has a new username? Every time this link is spammed on this board, I will remind the fans of my superior design: Chico Lind's Pitt Stadium 2.0.

There are 50,000 questions to be answered and no answers from those who support a new stadium.

I could see Pitt building a new stadium at some point in the future. But it won't be in Oakland, it won't be on-campus, and it would be at another remote location outside of Oakland for all of the obvious reasons. And it would be after Heinz Field either falls down or our lease runs out or is not renewed.

I think you'll be in a wheelchair soon enough. How bout we build the new stadium and you stay home and watch on tv?

LOL!!! You do realize that many of those same people and more will be in Oakland on weekends also, because of jobs, health care, etc.??? The football game will be a nuisance and an unnecessary inconvenience to most people. Heinz Field, as poor of a venue as that is, is absolutely the best option for Pitt now and well into the future. So please quit with the silly on-campus stadium noise!!!

You do realize that you are wrong. The silliness is that you think you are correct. The matter is beyond your yinzing. Just be quiet and watch progress.

FOR GODS SAKE.........

50K come to Oakland to make a living.......go to UPMC for necessary care....go to class.....

and i suspect that 99.9% of this 50K will tell you its a pain in the ass to get in and out of Oakland.

So ....now you use this argument to support your theory that 50K would come in on the weekend??? for something as UN-necessary as a football game?

HF works perfectly well for Pitt. if they ever lived up to their end and put a consistent winner on the field....the stadium issue would go away and half of the threads on this forum would evaporate.

Or a basketball game? LOLOLOLOL GO CUT YOUR GRASS OR SMOKE IT. YINZING WILL COST YOU YOUR LIFE.

This whole thing is so incredibly stupid. Why do so many of you let folks troll you so hard?

How can you tell a person is a level headed Pitt fan?

He drools out of both sides of his mouth..

It is 15 years old. It is insane to act like it needs replaced, or that the steelers are getting a new stadium anytime soon.

From the article I referenced earlier:

Modern stadiums used for professional sports seem to have a shorter shelf life than those of long ago and don’t nearly last as long as college football stadiums. Heinz Field opened in 2001; its predecessor, Three Rivers Stadium, lasted only 30 years.

The RCA Dome in Indianapolis, Indiana, which opened in 1984, lasted less than 24 years for the Indianapolis Colts. Plans are in the works to demolish the Georgia Dome which opened in 1992 for a retractable football stadium for the Atlanta Falcons to play in with an estimated opening for 2017.

Cities have to start saying no to these owners. It's disgusting that tax payers are paying for billion dollar stadiums that profit individual owners. Not as bad as what's going on In rio with olympics but not too far behind.

My GOD this is horrible....so much belligerence and non-gentleness on display in this thread.

I may not be able to sleep tonight....

agree with this SMF.. Heard games in Knoxville are ridiculous.. Never understood the traffic argument either.. It's like Pittsburghers need to get home so quickly.. What's at home that is so great and if it's so great, then why leave in the first place.. I think of games as more than the game, make it an event.. I look at people who need to get in and get out as weird, again, if you want to go home to your couch that bad, just stay home..

Think it's the age demographic of Pittsburghers and this complaint. Old people need easy access to games, have to have 3 major arteries within a 1/4 mile of the venue, need their tailgate spots designated, need to know the exact time they'll be home and any discourse from this wrecks their whole day.. Younger people cant be this uptight.
young people leave early so they can go drink and don't have an emotional investment, so why do they show up, just to be with friends. Quit pickin' on old people!

I think you'll be in a wheelchair soon enough. How bout we build the new stadium and you stay home and watch on tv?

You'll be in a wheelchair long before me. You're lucky you can walk a block and put one foot in front of the other. Now run....oh wait, walk along and quit smoking your wacky tobacky. New stadium????? LOL!!!

This zetazeta Neanderthal is a prime example of a knuckle dragger who is only here to instigate and get a rise out of any reasonable Pitt fan, just because he has nothing else to do in his miserable, useless life of being unemployed.

Who is this "we" you reference? Do you have a mouse in your pocket?

Tell us how the fund raising campaign on your website is going. Have you cracked a Dollar yet?

I remeber when GhostofPitt40 and his group of 5 raised money at the upstairs restaurant at the O to keep Pitt Stadium....I wonder if they still have the cash available?

Whatever it was, it was more than Pitt officially raised for that purpose.

[QUOTE} You are so talented that I'm gonna get you some crayons and legos. Now don't tell me that you're an urban planner with a master's degree? Not after this thing. I suggest you read the plan at www.newpittstadium.com And leave the city planning to the adults......[/QUOTE]

The lack of any awareness by ZetaZetaBeta that the drawing is a direct mockery of his website is hilarious.

Whatever happened to Ghost? I haven't seen a post from McKillops Rule in a while either.

Many fans drive and/or fly for hours to attend a college game in some out of the way location in the middle of nowhere. Pitt fans who live in western PA can't even handle some extra traffic 6 times a year?

Excellent point. I just finalized my plans to travel to see Pitt play against OSU and Clemson, and let me tell you--neither place is easy to get to, and the hotel options are really pathetic. Actually, WVU, PSU, VaTech and Notre Dame are equally difficult places to visit, with very poor hotel options, etc. I do not believe an on campus facility will be constructed--for the many reasons I articulated at the time in 1999 when the stupid decision to tear down Pitt Stadium were made. But if by some miracle an on campus stadium were built, traffic and parking would not be a problem in slowing down such a project. Hail to Pitt!
