** My hope this day was that our Panthers could get themselves on a little bit of a roll, especially after that excellent second half against UNC. But apparently they aren’t going to make things so easy on us as fans. More importantly, they are making things tough on themselves if they want to “leave no doubt.”

** In itself, this wasn’t a bad loss by any means. But it’s certainly a missed opportunity, and at some point, we may run short of opportunities.

** What I’ve begun to notice about this Panther team is that there really isn’t one thing we do very well, and because of this, we don’t leave ourselves much room for error in tight games down the stretch.

** For example, last year’s team, particularly Blake, could go off from three. But there is no such weapon this year.

** Generally speaking, we are a pretty efficient offensive team, mostly built around dribble drive penetration. But we’ve seen that can be thwarted, especially when we turn the ball over.

** Defensively, more often than not, we haven’t been a very good team, and our issues on the defensive glass are too well documented.

** Because there isn’t that one thing we do really well that we can count on, we have to work hard to do most everything well, and can’t allow a pure failure in any other area.

** So today, we managed to keep our rebounding issues at bay, and continued to take care of the ball, as we have in our past two wins.

** But instead, we were done in because we surrendered 42 second half points. After missing their first two on the second 20, Wake Forest made 13 of their final 24 shots.

** We just didn’t have many answers defensively in the second half. The zone was spotty, and once Wake was about to get the ball to the wing, they were able to drive.

** This is a team whose offense is ranked around #175 according to Pomeroy. They sure didn't look like it today, Seems like something we’ve seen fairly often this year.

** Meanwhile, down the stretch, we found ourselves taking too many tough shots. Ish, Damian and especially Jaland, were all guilty. Some of those tough ones could almost be counted as turnovers.

** And the usually more reliable Zach Austin was not so from three.

** In fact, the one thing we generally do quite well is shoot free throws, and we did that exceptionally well today. But so did Wake and because of this, we had no advantage in points scored at the line.

** And for a team who now shoots over 79% from the foul line, we need to get there a little more to take advantage of this strength. We average about 20 attempts per game, right where we were today. That’s a pretty good number actually. But much like many of the other things the Panthers do, it’s not a great number.

** So as much as it pains me to say it, if this team is going to go anywhere this season, particularly to the NCAA Tournament, it better figure out what area of their game they can hang their hat on. Oh yeah … then they need to do it, while not falling apart in other aspects. .

** Until that happens, we are going to find ourselves in more dogfights like today, leaving ourselves to hope we can win enough to play later in March.

** And for a team whose motto was leave no doubt, it seems like all they keep doing is create reasons to doubt them that much more.

Our team has both shooters and drivers. Ball movement and spacing should make us near impossible to defend.

All that advantage is negated by selfish play and poor decision making. Lowe, by far, is the biggest culprit.

This is the most I have been disappointed in a season post-Jamie. It’s likely my fault for having unrealistic expectations due to last year and the 12-2 start. I would never be accused on being an optimist and I never saw 2-5 coming. And I didn’t expect the guard play to stagnate the way it has and especially the disappearance of Cummings and the bench in general, which I think is a mistake. I’m not sure that giving Cummings 10 minutes of PT today might not have led to a better outcome.

But apparently they aren’t going to make things so easy on us as fans. More importantly, they are making things tough on themselves if they want to “leave no doubt.” A three-game winning streak would've been nice

** In itself, this wasn’t a bad loss by any means. But it’s certainly a missed opportunity, and at some point, we may run short of opportunities. Not a bad loss, but still, a loss. Maybe the game will get a spot on Scott Van Pelt's "Bad Beats" as I am pretty sure that the final three Pitt made might have allowed some bettors to profit while others said, "C'mon man!"
** What I’ve begun to notice about this Panther team is that there really isn’t one thing we do very well, and because of this, we don’t leave ourselves much room for error in tight games down the stretch. For awhile, our points off of turnovers was an asset; not tonight

** For example, last year’s team, particularly Blake, could go off from three. But there is no such weapon this year. Austin and Dunn had some open looks in the second half but passed them up more often than not. They are our two most effective 3-pt shooters and one or both will need to start lighting it up down the stretch

** Generally speaking, we are a pretty efficient offensive team, mostly built around dribble drive penetration. But we’ve seen that can be thwarted, especially when we turn the ball over. Too many times Ish and Jaland try to do too much with the dribble-drive; they need to improve their peripheral vision

** Defensively, more often than not, we haven’t been a very good team, and our issues on the defensive glass are too well documented. I am convinced that our coaches cannot "teach" this any further. We DONT have a rebounding BEAST on our team. No one

** Because there isn’t that one thing we do really well that we can count on, we have to work hard to do most everything well, and can’t allow a pure failure in any other area. Not many 50/50 balls today

** So today, we managed to keep our rebounding issues at bay, and continued to take care of the ball, as we have in our past two wins. Odd statistics in that we a) had more OR for a change b) scored more second chance points (as a result of the ORs) c) had a halftime lead for the first game in awhile d) had more assists and better assists to turnover ratio e) had 10 more shots than Wake

** But instead, we were done in because we surrendered 42 second half points. After missing their first two on the second 20, Wake Forest made 13 of their final 24 shots. Pick a defense that works and stay with it until it doesnt. We gave up the zone too early, IMO

** We just didn’t have many answers defensively in the second half. The zone was spotty, and once Wake was about to get the ball to the wing, they were able to drive. The zone was spotty but mostly effective compared to the m-2-m; the switches on ball screens was also effective (when we ran it)

** This is a team whose offense is ranked around #175 according to Pomeroy. They sure didn't look like it today, Seems like something we’ve seen fairly often this year. There were several moments in today's game where WF made some incredible shots after we played a great defensive set; and the first time WF got an OR, they made a 3 off of it

** Meanwhile, down the stretch, we found ourselves taking too many tough shots. Ish, Damian and especially Jaland, were all guilty. Some of those tough ones could almost be counted as turnovers. Agree. I think you can try these at home - where you've got the crowd behind you - but on the road you need to have effective offensive sets called

** And the usually more reliable Zach Austin was not so from three. He seemed tentative. Second game where a Pitt player "goes home" on the road and comes up dry. Corhen did it @ FSU and Zack did it at WF (he's an Winston-Salem dude)

** In fact, the one thing we generally do quite well is shoot free throws, and we did that exceptionally well today. But so did Wake and because of this, we had no advantage in points scored at the line. Is this the first time Pitt has shot 100% (with 20 attempts) at the line and lost? Ever?

** And for a team who now shoots over 79% from the foul line, we need to get there a little more to take advantage of this strength. We average about 20 attempts per game, right where we were today. That’s a pretty good number actually. But much like many of the other things the Panthers do, it’s not a great number. Excellent shooting from the FT line for both teams

** So as much as it pains me to say it, if this team is going to go anywhere this season, particularly to the NCAA Tournament, it better figure out what area of their game they can hang their hat on. Oh yeah … then they need to do it, while not falling apart in other aspects. . As others have said, we need to win every home game remaining and at least one, maybe two of the tougher remaining road games. Otherwise, we might need to get to the ACCT finals to assure a non-play-in bid

** Until that happens, we are going to find ourselves in more dogfights like today, leaving ourselves to hope we can win enough to play later in March. The team needs to have a short memory. Beat UVA by double-digits

** And for a team whose motto was leave no doubt, it seems like all they keep doing is create reasons to doubt them that much more. Fixed your typos! 😜

It’s not just that the team doesn’t do anything particularly well, it’s that there isn’t a single player that is consistent in doing something so well it takes the pressure off. And we take bad shots but we miss an incredible amount of fairly easy shots.

These are the types of games we won in our "glory days" under Dixon. We just found ways to get it done. A lot of that was grit/toughness, but a lot was just playing good, smart basketball.

Today, we saw a team that simply did not play smart basketball down the stretch. Poor shot decisions. Leaving Sallis wide open for a key 3. Not fouling Reid with 45 seconds left. Corhen inexplicably fouling with 2.5 seconds left on the shot clock. Finding ways to lose instead of win.

With Dunn looking recovered, Dunn should close games, not Lowe.

Lowe reminds me very much of Chris Thomas ex-Notre Dame player, a very good player, but not good enough to play hero ball.

Has a team with this poor of a Q1 winning % ever gotten into the tournament? And it's not like we're playing the cream of the crop within that quad.

If I'm on the committee, I'd rather put in a team like last year's Pitt team - some bad losses, but a respectable record in Q1 and a team that could absolutely win some tournament games.

With this team, there is a pretty clear line in the sand. A tournament bid would be a "no bad losses" trophy we would accept and then promptly return home after the first round.

On offense, it's all about ball movement and spacing. And what does Pitt do? We stand around while watching Ish and Lowe (and today Dunn) dribble drive, no ball movement most of the time, and poor spacing.

Our defense is suspect and our rebounding is inconsistent. We're not getting the instant offense, transition points that lead to 10 - 15 point runs. Until we play defense and rebound better in the same game, and use spacing and ball movement on offense, we'll keep losing to the middle of the pack ACC teams.

During the game I found myself saying this very thing to the television (at higher volume than necessary, according to my wife.)

This is the feeling I'm getting from this year's team. We **might** be able to squeak into the tournament simply avoiding bad losses, but it would sure be nice to have some higher quality wins on the resume as insurance. If we get some bid stealers taking the conference auto-bids we're going to look back ruefully at these missed opportunities.

Yeah, that would definitely make the tournament a better product to watch. You know, letting in teams that have shown they can really do some damage, beat some good teams like Pitt did last year. This quad stuff is really stupid.

The field is weaker
And this team did the OOC work last year didn’t
We need ro hold serve at home and steal a couple road wins

Thoughts on your dribbles:

- Great point about not doing anything real well. I guess you could say the strength of this team is "scoring" but there is really no aspect of our offense that is exceedingly good. We can shoot the 3 well at times but not all the time. Lowe and Leggett can drive and score at times but not all the time. Other guys like Dunn and Austin can step up at times but not all the time. So, while our offensive metrics are good, can you really consider that a strength?

- FT shooting is a strength but as I said during the Dixon days, this is a misleading statistic. Dixon's teams didn't shoot FTs well because we had straight-up beasts on the interior. They got fouled a lot and beasts don't shoot FTs very well. This team is good at FT shooting because Lowe and Leggett take most of them and it's not a good sign if your guards are getting more attempts than your bigs. It means you have no inside presence.

- Pitt continues to struggle to defend the 3. Wake came in dead last at 3 point shooting and they shoot 42%. That can't happen.

- Rebounding wasnt bad today but there are times when we just can't defend at all. We often give up 40+ points halves.

Wisconsin 2nd Half: 54 points
OSU 1st Half: 48 points
MSU: 47 & 43
Duke: 42 2nd Half
Lou: 47 2nd Half
FSU: 54 2nd Half (How?)
Clem: 40 1st Half
Syr: 40 2nd Half
UNC: 44 2nd Half
Wake: 42 2nd Half

For pretty much every P5 game this year, we go 1 full half of not being able to stop anybody.

I guess we should take this team for what it is. Mediocre. We can make the NCAA Tournament but this team isn't nearly as good as the last 2 years

Did you not watch Dunn? He is also a ball hog. He does not pass the ball once he gets it. None of the guards do. You all act like Ish and Dunn is taking good shots and getting their teammates involved. Neither of them do that. Just like Lowe they take awful shots at the worst times. You want to blame someone, blame Capel for allowing this to happen every game. If his lazy ass would design more plays to run, and just let the guards hold the ball on almost every possession, they would be getting better shots.

This is on Capel. He never should have shorten his bench to start ACC play. The rotations were working. Now he plays 7 guys. Those guards are getting worn out. You all say they dont play smart. My question to that is, if so, why doesnt Capel do anything about it to help the team? Each game it is clear he has no intent to do what is necessary to slow his players down to make better decisions on the court. He doesnt seem to know what he wants them to do on offense, so you cant expect the team to know. So you have ball hogging on 90% of their offensive possessions.

We've also had some of the worst FT% shooting guards you'd ever be able to find. Pretty sure Knight was in the 50s or something ridiculous. Maybe not quite that low. Was Feme the other one who was just atrocious?

What bothers me the most is that we do not seem to have improved much, if at all, during the course of the season. If anything, I think our last 7 or 8 games have been worse than the 7 or 8 preceding games.

To me, a lot of the blame for that falls on the staff.

I agree that the problems that reared their ugly heads 6 weeks ago still exist and the team hasn’t improved a lick.

This game was unnerving for me. Fortunately, I was having back spasms and had to take a muscle relaxant that mellowed me out a lot. So for me it was, "Oh look, another unsuccessful dribble drive by Lowe", or "Oh look, another Wake 3 pointer". I didn't yell at the TV much. Just felt very relaxed. That was some good drugs there.

Teams either get worse or improve during the season, depending on coaching and effort. Nothing ever stays the same. This Pitt team hasn't improved at all. Even if we make the NCAAT, I'm not thinking we'll be there long....again.

Lowe stands there, hands at his side, admiring his work while Wake adds two to our deficit with a run out layup.

Gotta end.

Not suggesting he's anywhere near as bad, but he is really starting to accrue some of the giveth/taketh qualities that plagued X. Doesn't help that he makes Manute Bol look like Ronnie Coleman in terms of muscle tissue.

Dunn and Leggett were each at 4 assists versus 1 turnover today.

Lowe (the primary ball handler) has 2 assists and 3 turnovers.

I know who I would rather see making decisions with the ball in their hands.

Dunn is much more likely to give the ball up and get others involved.

So we are on the same page, the Damien Dunn with the 12.9 assist rate (basically even with Guillermo Diaz Graham) is much more likely to give the ball up and get others involved than the Jaland Lowe with the 29.9 assist rate?

End of game. Hero ball.

Chris Thomas at N.D. Had a shit load of assists, just none end of game.

He had to be the guy.

After closing the Ohio State game, Lowe thinks he should do that every game.

I can't imagine how anyone could watch this team and not see Lowe, Leggett and Dunn play hero ball on a regular basis.

That's kind of a feature of this offense we are running, not a bug.

There is a difference between playing to your strengths early in games, and refusing to give the ball up at crunch time.
