that were bragging about how they got Miles Sanders because they have 107,000 at every home game and how they have the largest alumni base in the world at over 700.000. This was after the nonsense that I read on the TribLive site this morning about Sanders mother saying that she did not try to "push, pull, cajole or pry her son from Pitt". She said that what she was doing "ensured that her son didn't change his mind to another school".
So I told the two of them, that it does appear that psu got Sanders based upon lies. I told them we have all seen the photos of beaver stadium with many empty seats, so that 107,000 stuff is inaccurate and then I shut them up when I made them aware that they ARE NOT the largest alumni base in the world, that title goes to the University of Phoenix and its alumni base of over 923,000.
The blank look on their faces was priceless.

Next time you see them you can tell them they are also in the top 15 of the most un ethical sports programs ever.

I don't think largest alumni base is something that should be bragged about. It means they are just giving out diplomas like rolls of toilet paper that are probably worth as much.

I was thinking the same thing. What else would having the most alumni point to? Actually I'm surprised WVU does not have that title. A friend of mine is a WVU grad and he always jokes about the fact that WVU accepts 100% of out of state applicants.

I was sitting with two PSU grads also (happen to be my neighbors). They are very loyal to PSU, go to all away games, are good people and reasonable fans (nothing like you see over at BWI). They joked to me about PSU taking some of their recruits at the end, and that Narduzzi must leave, because he is becoming a formidable foe. We busted on each other intermittently the whole game. The one does not like Franklin, and said a good many fans think he will be gone in a couple of years. The one was actually friends with JoePa, so the scandal was not mentioned at the table at all, even though we have talked about it before. The both said though, that they fear Pitt is rising up, and PSU is stagnating, and they think PSU must beat Pitt in the next four years, or 'heads will role in HV.' They really did admit that Narduzzi is a great coach, showed it at MSU, and will move Pitt up the ladder. They also said that Dantonio gets the most of his talent, and should get more credit than Meyer or Harbaugh, who have more talent. They also talked about how 'dirty' recruiting is, and how the NCAA has to put a thumb on it or it will tarnish the sport.

I was at a SB party and talked to two friends who are staunch PSU fans and they do not like jimmy at all. These are good folks and they feel there was a coverup…..not joebots at all!

They kept talking about his inability to game plan, make adjustments during games and time mgt. They kept talking about #firefranklin. One is connected to their ticket office so that was interesting. Cant wait for 9/10!

You should have asked them what Branch Campus the graduated from? Branch Campus Dummies unite !!!

True story: I was in a meeting at a mid-sized mfg. company in Louisville ( $200 MM in sales ) and they were lamenting how hard it was for them to recruit maintenance electricians. One guy suggested recruiting kids that graduate from KCTCS ( Kentucky Community & Technical College System ) with associate degrees in Electrical Engineering Technology, as they pay their electrician's around $100k per year. I said " that's a good idea. " I then followed it up with " you know what Pennsylvania calls their community college system"? No one answered so after a few seconds I stated " Penn State." The room burst into laughter!

The dirty secret among the nitters is that most of them feel the same way. They will never admit it here. They visit here because they are worried.

What I don't understand is why you wasted your breath arguing with robots.

All of those alumni, yet Pitt still has a larger endowment.

The Nits should be embarrassed, by this - but it shows where their real priorities lie: athletics over academics.

Dude, we can all rip on Penn State for a lot of things, but I don't think the schools in Kentucky have any bragging room over PSU. O

It was only a matter of time. With that many alumni, they dwarf us.

Particularly when, between 2012 and 2013, Penn State moved nearly $1 billion in funds previously invested in the university's general operating assets into its endowment (ref, see last page). Gee, I wonder why they moved almost $1 billion in funds in 2012 to an endowment pool that has state mandated legal restrictions on its access?

BTW, Pitt's total does not include the now over $163 million held in the Dietrich Foundation for the exclusive benefit of the School of Arts & Sciences nor the $22.7 million held in a separate endowment for Pitt-Bradford. So in reality, Pitt's is still larger, although it doesn't have legal control over those two endowment funds so they are not counted in its total.

But as I've said every time this comes up, what really matters is endowment per students+faculty.

Yes, we should remind ourselves that the Joebots on BWI certainly do not represent all of PSU alums. Unfortunately, they represent a sizeable minority. Many of the real crazies are just fans, but not necessarily alums. This happens at many schools.

But bragging about having the largest alumni association is shocking, since it necessarily means they are a diploma factory. Each year, they have nearly 100,000 students across their campuses. You can get a full PSU degree without ever setting foot on the main campus, having gotten in with CC entry level credentials.

And these same folks who brag about the size of their alumni associations will also talk about their university as if its elite, using the absurd phrase "near Ivy". How in the world can they compare a school with ~98k students, most of whom got in with minimal credentials, with an Ivy League school of 8000 students that has insane entry requirements?

Delusional doesn't begin to describe their viewpoint.

Penn State inflated their attendance figures this year but the number is still a big one.
PSU averaged 99,000 plus.
OSU averaged 107,000 plus
MICHIGAN averaged 110,000 plus.
I see an improvement for PSU attendance in 2016. They only sell out when OSU or MICHIGAN come to town. Even if PSU craps the bed, OSU fans will fill their Stadium for them.
Pitt will fill it next year.
Finally PSU'S multiple branches fill that alumnus number. PSU charges dues for it AA, so the claim is actually the largest dues paying. OSU changed their AA a few years back and eliminated dues. So the word is that OSU is technically the largest.
Doesn't really matter...both are huge.

I have said this before, I have been working various jobs in Central and Western PA since fall of '72. As someone who came upon the place with zero agenda, I can tell you that there is a huge difference between working for a PSU grad and a Pitt grad in terms of general knowledge, ability to handle unexpected obstacles, and dealing with the variety of personalities a leader encounters. Of course it is not a 100% link, I would put it this way, the smooth, problem solving, well adjusted, team building boss is a rarity among the PSU grads, while the uppity, know nothing, finger pointing, make it worse bosses are the norm in that group. Just the opposite for the Pitt grads and I really believe there is something at the core of all of this but I am unsure of what it might be.

University of Phoenix and Penn State... two fine scholastic institutions.

Seriously, who on earth would brag about having the most alumni???? Does anyone think dilution of your degree is good? I mean, if Harvard started accepting 70K per year, wouldnt that school dilute their student intellect down to just above UPS?

Of course, when the only reason you are proud of your school is football and getting 100K at games, then of course it doesnt matter, and you want to brag about number of alumni, but sounds really goofy.

I travel all over the place and when I tell people that I'm from Pennsylvania, the Penn State Child Rape Scandal still comes up. This thing is a real black eye for our state that still requires explanation. Penn State will be dragged through the mud again for several years with trials, appeals, conviction, etc... This thing lingers until about 2022.

Really? I travel all the time and it never comes up. In fact, when I tell them I am from "the Pittsburgh area" they assume I am a PSU fan.

I will never just say "I'm from Pennsylvania." Because that's exactly what happens when you do and sadly they brought shame to the entire state. Saying I'm from outside of Pittsburgh is a much better option.

I travel every week and across the eastern half of the country. Especially Big Ten country.

I just don't think it comes up in any casual conversation. I think if it does it is precipitated by Pitt fans with "what do you think of PSU scandal".

Don't take this as a justification of anything that has gone on up there. Just the world has moved on. Mostly Pitt fans are trying to keep this alive Unfortunately not out of respect for the victims but to continue to embarrass Penn State.

It comes up this way. I talk to someone that is a UCLA fan and I ask them if USC is going to be good and if they will beat the Trojans. They go into all the reasons USC is crooked blah, blah, blah. Same thing withe Oregon St/ Oregon, Florida/ Florida State. It comes up talking college college Football, the other person being an attentive conversationalist and then the scandal.

It's not like I'm walking into 7-eleven in San Jose buying a snickers and people ask about it.

BWI currently has a classic thread about attendance on the board. Blind Nitter Kool-Aid drinker starts a thread asking "108,000 strong -- Why do you want to change that?"

https://bwi.forums.rivals.com/threads/108-000-strong-why-do-you-want-to-change-that.94483/

Numerous posters blast the OP for espousing such nonsense as "108,000 strong." Even Marshall30/pnnylion acknowledges the massive amount of empty seats at PSU these days. Fellow Cultist Oblivax also points out the ":thousands of unsold seats."

If only the Board of Trustees would honor the great pedophile enabler, Nitter fans would come rushing back.

Marshall30: "Ask the BoT and Roidney why there are so many unsold seats."

Oblivax: "Because there are tens of thousands of unsold seats."

DianefromNJ: "My husband and I are 35 year season ticket holders, and just dropped our season ticket holder status. A combination of thousands of dollars a year of expense, no acknowledgement yet for Paterno by the cowardly administration, subsidizing free game tickets to others, and questions about game day coaching ability drove our decision."

BPXCIV: "The stadium wasn't filled this year, it was evident."

Yeah but that is in the context of talking about your rivals. That is not something usually brought up in casual discussion, even if it is about college football.

I completely disagree, when I am in Nashville, or Phoenix, or Miami, and even Boston, when I say I am from Pennsylvania, I get someone asking if I went to that college with the kid rape thing. I just got asked up in Boston 2 weeks ago.

I think that is pretty much all people think about of Penn State outside of Pennsylvania. No different than if you hear SMU.

I got this in New Zealand this past weekend. I was playing in an ice hockey tournament with some Aussie teams. Some of these guys were Canadian so they asked me where in the States I was from. I tried to be a little more specific as they may know some places, so I said Pennsylvania (I'm not actually from Pittsburgh). Man they just started on Penn State and Paterno. They don't actually remember that it was Sandusky, but Paterno is recognizable and this is the word association people do. These guys called me "Penn State" or "Paterno" for the rest of the weekend. I will never make the mistake of saying I'm from Pennsylvania again.

Not anymore. PSU endowment is now slightly larger than Pitt's.

When I am introduced to somone, I usually compliment something materialistic (their tie, their vehicle, whatever) and then ask , "so what do you think about the Penn State child rape scandal?"

Is this not how you guys make friends?

Yes, but see Paco's post, #17 in this thread. He provides some good information about this subject.

And frankly, considering how large they are as a university, and how many more alumni that they've produced, it has to be rather depressing for them that it took them so long to catch-up to Pitt.
