Was at a Super Bowl party today and had the pleasure of meeting 2 penn state grads...

Yes, but see Paco's post, #17 in this thread. He provides some good information about this subject.

And frankly, considering how large they are as a university, and how many more alumni that they've produced, it has to be rather depressing for them that it took them so long to catch-up to Pitt.
I think their alumni donate more to the football team than to the academic side.

The Nits fan base is basically if you took the delusion and idiocy of Rutgers fans and sprinkled in child molestation and an unwavering cult support for a man that covered it all up.

Both fanbases and athletic departments are an absolute joke and it's so sweet seeing that Penn States time is up. As for Buttgers their time never began.

Not anymore. PSU endowment is now slightly larger than Pitt's.

Yeah, in a really weird sort of way, the Sandusky scandal and all that followed cause the Who's to rally around the Christmas Tree in Whoville, singing Ba Hoo Doree holding hands. I am serious, they circled the wagons and supported anyway they can. This caused their endowments to increase. Strange behavior, but one befitting a true cult.

You can't claim tradition when you haven't finished in the top 15 in over 30 years

Here's some recent "tradition" I think you'll find interesting:

Really? I travel all the time and it never comes up. In fact, when I tell them I am from "the Pittsburgh area" they assume I am a PSU fan.

I actually do travel a lot. All over and quite a bit in SEC country. They don't even think college football exists in PA. Only Ohio St. I get asked if I'm a Steelers fan almost every trip even if I'm wearing Pitt stuff. I don't think I've ever been asked anything regarding PSU while discussing Pittsburgh. So, personally, I find it impossible to believe people associate PSU with Pittsburgh.

Oh that's such bullshit, 2 lies in this thread.

Really? Would you care to point out what you are referring to? What team were you playing for in the tournament, as you must have been there? Wish I'd have known you were here, I'd have taken a shot at you along the boards.

I got this in New Zealand this past weekend. I was playing in an ice hockey tournament with some Aussie teams. Some of these guys were Canadian so they asked me where in the States I was from. I tried to be a little more specific as they may know some places, so I said Pennsylvania (I'm not actually from Pittsburgh). Man they just started on Penn State and Paterno. They don't actually remember that it was Sandusky, but Paterno is recognizable and this is the word association people do. These guys called me "Penn State" or "Paterno" for the rest of the weekend. I will never make the mistake of saying I'm from Pennsylvania again.
PATERNO,
Canadians hockey players are the BEST!! Great sense of humor.

Greg, my territory includes Ohio, Michigan and Indiana. What do you think?

You act as if Penn St. has been Alabama under Nick Saban in the past 30 years. It's not as if there has been this tremendous collection of national titles in State College over the past 30 years. Since joining the Big 10, PSU gets embarrassed and humiliated by Ohio St most years, all while crying that it's the refs fault.

PSU wants the scandal gone. The problem is it was never a scandal. It was a disgrace. You simply don't get past that. It is a stain It was an unspeakable act of cowardice by the very people entrusted to maintain any shred of integrity. All of you participated in the charade of Paterno and his ill gotten legacy.

that were bragging about how they got Miles Sanders because they have 107,000 at every home game and how they have the largest alumni base in the world at over 700.000. This was after the nonsense that I read on the TribLive site this morning about Sanders mother saying that she did not try to "push, pull, cajole or pry her son from Pitt". She said that what she was doing "ensured that her son didn't change his mind to another school".
So I told the two of them, that it does appear that psu got Sanders based upon lies. I told them we have all seen the photos of beaver stadium with many empty seats, so that 107,000 stuff is inaccurate and then I shut them up when I made them aware that they ARE NOT the largest alumni base in the world, that title goes to the University of Phoenix and its alumni base of over 923,000.
The blank look on their faces was priceless.
And of course the U of Phoenix is not known as a quality school so they want to compete with the online school ??

The other annoying thing about Penn State is their elitist attitude when it comes to academics. If you get denied by Pitt or Temple then you're denied. If you're literate enough to scribble out an application you're guaranteed to be accepted to Psu at one of their 50 campuses. Then they make it to main campus after 2 years and feel entitled to brag about their academic superiority.
