Watching 1988 Pitt vs PSU on Youtube and forgot how good...

Landing all those stud defensive linemen, getting Baron Jackson

Pitt went 8-3-1, but who else played the top two teams in college football that season? Pitt always over scheduled back in the day. It's a reason the school had lost over 500 games in its history.

Oh come on. It is not always "over scheduling'. If we had such talent, why didn't we win those games?

Funniest part of this game is the announcer saying Ricketts has a chance to be a better pro than Stepnowski. Dude couldn't even cut it at guard for the Steelers after being moved from tackle about two drills into training camp.

On the other side of the ball....interesting imo how far State College's talent had dropped off just 2 years removed from playing for the MNC two yrs in a row.
they really weren't very good although I completely cannot remember their record so perhaps I'm off it here.

In fact had it not been Pitt ...in a Pitt -State game any other team with Pitt's talent would have kicked their ass that night.

Pitt actually did but still managed to make it close....scoreboard wise.

Pitt settling for short field goals and not capitalizing on an INT at the PSU 5 yard line and PSUs inability to convert field goals (missed a short one and had one blocked) really affected the final score. Pitt's D played well and PSUs QB was terrible.

PSU went 5-6 in 1988 and had a young team as well. The Nitters stayed the course and Pitt chose to deviate from its plan.

Not that funny seeing as how Ricketts went in Round 1 and Step went in Round 3. A lot of people who made a living on evaluatiing football talent agreed with the announcer. Amazingly, sometimes things work out differently.

Yes a real stroke of genius named Paul Hackett.
I am all for piling on Hackett, guy put Pitt in the ER where johnny majors came in and pulled the plug.. But Gottfried's record doesn't match his talent and that doesn't have anything to do with Hackett.. Mike had good teams with great rosters..

The 10-1 season should have came in 1987. Even with the QB issues, never ever should Pitt have lost at home to both Temple and BC.

Bingo. Lost to Temple on a deflected pass caught for a TD, and to a really bad BC team after the Eagles kept running the same play and scored a TD late.

Just imagine how bad I had it in the late 80s, rooting for the Pitt teams with all that talent, but constantly losing to inferior teams, and being an Eagles fan under Buddy. The pro version of Pitt

My bad. If you are active service thanks for your service and watch all the YouTube you can, man.

All good drunkinoakland. I laughed at your comment as my wife makes comments like that when I'm watching old games. I watch the games with my 13 year old son so he can see some of the players that I talk about but came through prior to his time. He knows of Larry the Legend, Revis and others from NFL, but not in the Pitt context. Showed him the 2002 Insight Bowl and Fitz's incredible flying catch.

No longer in the Navy and living in the far south of New Zealand now. It's all rugby, soccer and cricket here. The Kiwis call the American football "the gridiron" as football is soccer and footy is rugby.

I am getting out of the house tonight to go watch the All Blacks against Wales. We have Super Rugby season tickets for the Highlanders. Someday I'll understand most of the penalties but I still feel entitled to blame any losses on the ref LOL.

Well, most Pitt fans cry the blues saying coaches need 4 or 5 years to get his players. Well Gottfried got 3 years with 2 top 5 recruiting classes he never got to groom. I am willing to bet if he stayed for 5 years to coach the insane talent he brought in. History would be much different
This is right on.

Agree....

But here's some background .... Acquaintances at the time who worked at Pitt , and several newspaper stories said and reported that he was bat s* crazy and impossible to manage or even deal with...in addition openingly and quite often flaunting his various other job opportunities.
And he never coached again...

But with the Killer Bs in charge and not knowing the true story there imo he should have stayed.
Hey if he was crazy, he was also working with a house full of INCOMPETENTS known as the Pitt Ath Dept.

And those same gave us Buddy Hackett

Buddy Hackett openly stabbed Gottfried in the back, telling Bozik he could win with the new entrance requirements. This allowed Bozo to jettison Gottfried and install Hackett after a "nationwide search" that never left the Pitt locker room. BRILLIANT

Gottfried also had a major meltdown after the 16-13 loss to PSU that also led to his firing

Gottfried took no shit from the press or Paterno...or his bosses lol. The press really pounced on him. They published stuff that was way out of line like him having some kinda screaming meltdown like a crazy person in the middle of the night out in a thunderstorm. There were many personal vendettas waged against him both in the university and by the press. Meanwhile St. Joe was covering for a pedophile and nobody bothered to peak past the curtain to see if Success With Honor was real. They were too busy trying to make sure Gottfried paid for being mean to them.

Which journalist did he challenge to a fistfight? I can't remember. I don't think I'm imagining it. It should be in Google's news archives.

As much fun as Lee Corso can be in the studio, I had completely forgotten how abysmal he was as a color man. Thanks for posting the link - enjoyed watching this one all over again!

We spanked OSU 42-10 as well. We should have had 9-10 win seasons with all that talent.

...that 1988 team was despite only going 6-5. Very strong on the offensive and defensive lines. Jerry O at MLB flanked by McDonald and Bray. Curvin Richards was the TB. Spelled by Adam Walker and Ronald Redmon getting some carries at FB. Williams, Tuten and Osborne at WR. Riddick at safety, Holloway and Hampton at the corners. And man was Dickerson talented. Able to extend the play and still get the ball down the field. He threw the ball like it was a dart.

And that team was very young. Oh what could have been!

The schedule was brutal that year with ND and WVU both being top 10 teams and Syracuse was good that year too.

Here is the link if you want to watch it:

RIP, Curtis Bray

You're right--he was brutal. On the other hand, Gottfried was great as a color guy, maybe the best for college football until Herby came along.
