Can't remember if it was 97 or 98 that this ran in the Pitt News. But it's nice that Pitt's program has solid enough depth now that to my knowledge hoping to stumble across a serviceable non-scholarship lineman somewhere in Oakland is a thing of the past.

I'm more impressed with LaSala being around so long. I knew he's been around a while, but didn't realize it dated back to the Walt Harris era.

That was as low as I remember Pitt football every being. Good find.

I believe it was 97. myself and two of my friends were going to sign up but i though i would just get crushed.

Back side of this has some pizza coupons that expire 7-30-98; so I guess this was from spring or summer semester 1998.
At least we knew about target marketing techniques. We didn’t team the ad with vegan restaurant (was that a thing then?) coupons or yoga lesson ads.

I'm 6'3" and was a student then. I would have tried out if not for having a few extra pounds, being slow, not wanting to serve as a tackling dummy, etc.

Actually, maybe I should have called. Could have started! I would have asked for the 2am timeslot!

It’s impressive that Wlat did what he did at Pitt. Even if his players didn’t always do what they were coached to do.

Imagine what Wlat could have done with Script instead of Dinocat / Torchcut / Vegas Gold and Navy Blue?

When I see highlights of Fitz, Shady, AD and others from 97 on to when sanity prevailed (nearly)… I have regret that they are in such random, ridiculous uniforms. The other night when Kancey was chosen they compared and contrasted him … one screen, Kancey … the other, some guy who looked like he was playing for Toledo or something.

I wish there was some AI that Pitt (ok more like CMU) wizards could create that could take all Pitt football and basketball footage from those years and digitally swap the images of the old uniforms and colors into current versions.

Stupid stupid stupid .

Probably Pizza Hut.
PH too rich for my blood. Hell so were most of the other Oakland pizzeria. Capri (along with 3 for a buck Sheetz dogs) kept us alive with their 3.99 “pizza” (not sure what they actually produced would legally qualify for the term per FDA standards), plus their liter containers of totally flat generic cola.

Especially critical on freezing nights when it was nasty to go out but the dinner at the Towers caf was something disgusting like liver (yes they frequently did feature liver in the mid 80s, as well as this gross lump of beef like matter we referred to as Baked Rat). Not nearly as bad as the absolutely vomit inducing boiled scallops they’d have on most Fridays (the stink went all the way up to the top floors of the Towers, and likely up to the space station).

So my Fr and So years I spent untold time in the Towers lobby waiting like a junkie for the Capri guy. Later years, lived more in South Oakland, worked at a part time job so had a few more shekels … but those first couple dorm years were painful.

I probably ate at Capri's 3x a week while in college. I think it was like $2,50/pizza when I first started eating there. The last I remembered it was still under $5.00. The owners were landlords of a few properties. Decent people.

Rax was also a godsend. Now gone, but briefly had been across the O at Bouquet/Forbes. Had decent sandwiches, but especially a good salad bar upstairs that had many items beyond salad stuff (pasta, etc). Nominal cost, and you could really load up. That place and salad bar supplied my lunch and dinner together in one (long) sitting more than once.

During the 1984-1985 school year, it was indeed as low as $2.45 for a pizza w/out toppings and two watered down 1 liter cartons of Pepsi.

I preferred Roy Rogers in the basement of the Cathedral.

Rax’s salad bar was very underrated.
