Weekend Softball From College Station, Texas

Pitt won its first game this weekend in College Station, Texas, beating Missouri State, 4-1 in 8 innings. MSU was 26-17 last year and 16-6 in their conference. Have no idea how good the conference is. They started this season 1-4, but played 3 games against ranked teams — Oklahoma State and Arizona State twice. Their one win was 4-0 over ASU.

Drogemuller pitched a complete game for Pitt, with 8 strikeouts. She gave up 4 hits and walked 2. Pitt hit two HRs in the 8th to win it. 3B Kayla Lane hit a 2R HR and freshman 2B Kylie Griggs hit a solo shot. Pitt had a lot of baserunners earlier but couldn’t get more than the one run.

Pitt plays Stephen F. Austin later tonight. Kansas and Texas A&M also are in the Invitational. Pitt plays both tomorrow.

Have no idea how good the conference is.

I don't either, but they did get two teams in the NCAA tournament last year. So their regular season champion was good enough to get an at large after they lost in the conference tournament.

Nice comeback in the second game against SF Austin late last night. Down 4-0 after two, scored two in the 4th and four in the 5th and won 6-4. Drogemuller pitched the 6th and 7th to get a save.

Pitt came from behind to beat Stephen F Austin in the second game last night.

The pitching problem reared it’s ugly head in the early innings. McKenzie Stiles pitched for the second time this season — and got lit up for the 2nd time. She was charged with 3 runs in 1.1 innings of work. Muraskin relieved her in the 2nd and gave up a 3 run homer. 2 of the runs were charged to Stiles.

Down 4-0, Pitt slowly clawed its way back. Tuta Ramirez hit a 2 run HR in the 4th. Pitt scored 4 runs in the 5th to take the lead, helped out by the RF dropping a fly ball. Muraskin was effective after the 2nd as SFA got a few baserunners but didn’t score. Drogemuller, who had pitched an 8 inning complete game earlier in the day, came in and pitched a scoreless 7th.

Weird scheduling today. Pitt plays host Texas A&M at 6:30 Eastern time and then plays Kansas immediately afterwards at 9 pm.

Pitt got mercy-ruled in tonight’s opener against Texas A&M 10-0.

For the second straight game, Pitt’s starter couldn’t get out of the first inning. This time it was Abby Edwards who only got 1 out. She was relieved by freshman Kendall Brown, making her Pitt debut as the sacrificial lamb to carry on until the mercy rule took effect.

I’m not certain how many times this team got mercy ruled last year, but it was quite a few. For those not familiar with the rule, a game is called anytime ftom the 5th inning on that one team is behind by 10 or more runs. Here, with A&M leading by 10 after 4 1/2, they didn’t bat in the 5th.

it’s still early in the season, but right now this looks like a pitching staff with one decent starter, Drogemuller. Marsakin looks like she might be effective in a relief role. She doesn’t appear to have the stamina to work a lot of innings. Stiles and Edwards look like they did last year, which is not a good thing.

Nice 3-1 weekend. Drogemuller is the best pitcher we have had since Harris and Dawson. She has pitched very good so far. Muraskin will help too, but the other 3 aren’t good enough right now.

I’m encouraged that she pitched two complete games in two days — one of which was 8 innings — and also closed out the second game yesterday. She is going to have to pitch Fridays and Sundays when we get into the ACC.

The discouraging thing was that she didn’t strike out many batters after the 4th inning in either game. She probably loses a little heat when she tires. But, it’s early in the season and she can build up her stamina.

I miss Dawson. Her dad used to come to almost every game with a video camera and broadcast the games live on Periscope.

Dani battles. Even when she tires she has been good at getting out of jams. She was facing the top of the KU lineup in that last inning and although she gave up 3 hits and 2 runs, she made the pitches when she had to. Right now this is a better team than I thought they would be.
