Pitt would have made it in 2021, so easy answer.

Pirates have no chance under this owner.

That took 40 years, and the game has changed significantly - to the detriment of Pitt - since then.

I honestly don't know which one will happen first, but I assume I won't be alive to see it. Maybe Bubba Chandler is the real deal and he and Skenes can carry the team one year in the not-so-distant future.

It's a nice thought but, you still have to score a few runs to win. The buccos will forever be deficient in that area. I'm 58 and will be long dead before either happens. I am hoping for a final 4 appearance from the Panther hoop team before they box me up.

They'll have to win 30 each. It still wouldn't be enough, probably.

Pitt was closer in 2021 and this year to making the playoffs than the pirates have ever been to the world series since 1992. But Cueto did drop the ball so there's that.

You should have included at least one option that has a non-zero probability....something like "Hell freezing over".

Pitt could have made the playoffs this year. A healthy Pitt could have made a run. A lot of what ifs, but easy with the new CFB model. Basically need 10 wins. A healthy Eli and Reid beats Virginia and Clemson. Lose to Lville but then beat BC to get SMU rematch where anything can happen. You need to stay healthy or more depth. But not impossible with some luck.

Pitt was nowhere near the playoffs this season. I understand why they misled some people due to the chronological order of their schedule, but they were nowhere near the playoffs.

Hence, why they were the lowest-rated 7-0 power conference team ever. Everyone knew what was coming.

Virginia was a one-score game in the second half with Holstein. Beating them and BC is far from a slam dunk.

Yarnell actually played well against Clemson - better than any game Holstein played since, what... YSU?

And, above all else, 10-2 doesn't guarantee making the playoff. See: Miami.

I think it's more likely that the Pirates make the College Football Playoff then the other two options.

I would argue they were decently close in 2013. They were up 2-1 on the Cardinals, so they had two chances to win one game.

If they won that best of five series, they'd have played the Dodgers for the NL Championship.

The Pirates won 94 games that season; the Dodgers won 92.

The Dodgers won the season series 4-2, but that was thanks to a sweep in April. The Pirates took 2 out of 3 against them in July.

That said, even that season will have been twelve years ago by the time 2025 begins. So it's not like it's recent history or anything like that.

They didn't even get to the NLCS. Pitt would have been in the CFP in 2021 and were closer in 2009 than the Pirates were to the world series in 2013.

The Pirates were two runs away from the NLCS, and they had two chances to get there.

Sure, Pitt would have been in the playoff in 2021. But if you think we're ever going to have a Heisman candidate at QB, a 1st round receiver, a 1st round DT, and ten draft picks in the two-deep again, in this NIL era, then I would strongly disagree. And even then we barely made it. 10-2 Miami this season, for instance, isn't getting in.

They were extremely close this year. 10-2 Miami lost conference tiebreakers. 10-2 doesnt get Pitt in to thr playoff by itself but it would give them a shot to beat SMU this weekend to make it. That should be the goal. A chance to make playoffs with Pitt final game.

7-5 Pitt was extremely close to making the playoff this year?

Barely made it? They won the ACC which is an auto bid.

If the Pirates somehow land Roku Sasaki I would take them. Otherwise, the answer is Pitt.

It wouldn't have been an auto bid.

SEC, Big Ten, AAC, Big 12, and PAC 12 champs were all ranked ahead of them.

Additionally, they had the benefit of a Coastal schedule that no longer exists.

I know it’s distressing to admit that Duzz had a team capable of making it this year. 7-1 Pitt was still ranked. Had they beaten Virginia and Clemson they would have been 9-1. Even with a blowout loss to Lville they would have held tiebreakers to make it to a rematch of SMU had they beaten BC. It’s not a far fetched scenario that they could have won the ACC this year.

It's very far-fetched. They were 7-0 against all statistical odds.

Also, you're counting Pitt's injuries but not other teams'. Like Clemson's offensive line situation when we played them.

I'm with 666 (remember the lottery scandal?) on this one. There was more of a realistic shot this year than the Pirates will ever know. Win VA & BC, it would have been interesting.

they were 7-0. That’s what made it possible. And then they lost the most important skill position. And clemsons injuries were what Pitt needed to compete. Pitt won’t compete every season. Won’t come close due to injuries and lack of depth. But this was one year where they just had to go 3-2 but got injuries and unraveled.

And here's the thing... If the Pirates made it to the WS, I would think they might have a legitimate chance to win it. If Pitt made the playoffs, they would just be there for shits and giggles & get first rounded.
