So here you are the AD that extended her coaches contract way too soon and now she’s on the hook for 5 more yrs and millions of dollars . Why not publicly come out and support your coach saying that she realizes that expectations haven’t been meet , but there’s been extenuating circumstances the last 2 seasons . Saying this gives the coaching staff some credibility on the road with recruits and their families . Giving this public vote of confidence doesn’t stop her from reevaluating the coaching situation at the end of the season , but gives JC some time to try and recruit .

She already did this. It did nothing for recruiting.

A vote of confidence isn’t going to fix recruiting. He wasn’t on the hot seat last year and he landed one high school recruit with several open scholarships. Kids aren’t stupid, they are going to look at who they will potentially be playing with, like Mintz did, and realize there’s no light at the end of the tunnel and Capel is in trouble regardless of what lyke says

Votes of confidence mean nothing. In fact having to give a vote of confidence only means there’s trouble. These kids and their families aren’t biting on any of that nonsense and are taking it with the grain of salt it’s barely worth.

This thread just proves what most of people are saying. It’s started by one of Capel’s most ardent defenders asking if a vote of confidence will help Capel’s recruit when he has 5 years left on his contract.

This program is dead.

If you‘d be doing your due diligence you’d know I no longer think he should be retained !

However , he’s not my hire nor do I have to pay his salary and balance a budget .

So if the program is dead why do you follow so closely ? Just shut it down until they hire a coach you approve of . You’d make many on this site happy .

I unlike yourself have the ability to make positive comments when warranted .

I’ve made plenty of positive comments —- when they’re actually warranted. This staff is an abortion.

Pitt fans who want to drive other pitt fans away (I’ve been to two games this year, btw, you?) because they’re not happy with the state of a program are the worst. We suck. We have no recruits other than darts at the transfer portal. For anyone to disparage someone who doesn’t think this is acceptable in year 4 is odd.

And no, Heather shouldn’t do anything else to help Capel. Especially with rumors swirling he isn’t responsive or have a good working relationship with her.

She’s equipped him with upgraded facilities. She’s equipped him with upgraded budgets.
She’s equipped him with upgraded salaries for him and his staff. Additional support staff.
she’s equipped him with an unwarranted contract extension.
She recently equipped him with the vote of confidence.

Short of her dropping bags of cash to recruits, there isn’t much more an AD can do.

I hadn't seen or heard those rumors, but I've been pretty checked out on basketball lately. Was there a thread that talked about it somewhere?

When they play in Fl then I go !

The results since JD left are horrible and everyone who follows the program knows this . Your not breaking new ground here .

Constantly being so negative is just tiresome. I’m sure if Mintz would’ve honored his verbal you’d still find negatives about the kid or that he only signed 1 guy .

There’s no coach coming to Pitt whose going to recruit the kind of players instantly that will change a thing unless they embrace some profit sharing plan .

You say no coach is coming to pitt and doing that. There are coaches going new places and doing exactly that every year everywhere. Why is Pitt different?

See this is what perplexes me about this board and Pitt fans in general. You think someone like me isn’t a “real fan” because we think Pitt can do BETTER than we have been doing. You seem resigned to Pitt’s fate being an also ran unless we cheat.

Maybe I’m the naive one and the only thing we can do is lose and lose. But Wake Forest was in almost as bad of shape as us and will finish in the top 5 in year 2. And it’s a worse job. The resources aren’t as good, it’s like the 7th best school in NC for hoops and the 4th best in just it’s own region. So I refuse to believe that Pitt’s fate is an ACC also ran unless we cheat.

me negative? What do you want me to be positive about!? We have one and a half ACC players who would be acceptable on this team given their current minutes if we wanted to be an ncaa team. Ever since the second half of Wake, this train has ran off the tracks and it’s time to blow it up again.

The decision to allow Capel to coach next year relies on 2 things:

He needs to win enough ACC games and return Hugley + 3 of 4 of Femi, Burton, Nike, Horton. The other guys on the team arent ACC level so it doesn't matter if they transfer.

Both of these things need to happen. If we go 8-12 but all the good players leave, he's gone. We cant do another rebuild after just doing 2 of them.

I don't know if this is true but it would make sense as he seems like he is ready for his buyout so he can move on.

It’s not about negative or positive to me but contributing to a discussion about moving forward with or without Capel.

Posts saying he should leave and all our players are transferring don’t add anything to our discussion of how does Pitt Hoops get better.

Which is why I asked you the other day if you had an axe to grind. Your response to that and this post help the discussion and understand where you are coming from.

I think the majority of people coming here are Pitt fans. Seeing what comes next is the tough part and our past history doesn’t instill a lot of confidence.

I like the Wake comp you used and thought Steve Forbes would have been good here too. Good system coach.

Here’s to hoping 2022-3 looks better than the past 6 years.

Agreed, and the reason Forbes is so successful imo, is because he was a Juco head coach after getting busted with pearl at Tennessee.

The ability to piece together teams from year to year is the most important quality now. Not saying hiring a juco coach or necessarily someone with juco roots, but it’s not a terrible idea to hire someone like that as an assistant. Would love to steal Demeo from St John’s.

Yeah our next coach needs connections in Philly / NY or DC or all 3. That’s the most natural recruiting bases we have.

Why is there no good HS basketball players in Pittsburgh or at least only 1 every 3-4 years.

The freshmen class is actually pretty damn good.

1. the Alier kid at Imani who will probably be at OakHill next year
2. Meleek Thomas at Lincoln Park will be a HM kid. Prob top 50
3. Amare Evans - Bishop Canevin is a MM +
4. Jayden Davis - Chartiers valley - a little spark plug PG not sure what level he ends up probably needs a few inches.

not real deep but at least 3 of those should be on Pitt’s radar. The problem is grassroots here is a joke and when you have a great player like Gallagher theyre pushed towards football (although in his case it’s probably the right move).

I don’t see why Pitt has to have focused recruiting areas either. The football team pulls from everywhere and kids will pretty much go anywhere in hoops too. Even before hoops recruiting was National we pulled Jason Matthews from LA (or wherever). Finding guys who are connected to certain programs, areas, families, recruits then building off those relationships is the key. I don’t care if the coach is from texas if he is able to dive into Texas and find the underrated kids who either want to get away or want to play in the ACC.

Having some sort of coherent plan is the key. For everything. I was thinking about it last night and becoming president isn’t a good example lol. But if you were to get to the top of whatever field you aspire to be in, would you not immediately have an idea of what you wanted to do. Maybe there was a plan here and it was poorly executed. Or just didn’t work out. Just can’t see how it turns around barring some miracle in ACc play.

Constantly saying that everybody sucks both players and coaches brings nothing to the conversation. Ragging on 18yr olds who are giving it their all also seems particularly unnecessary to me .

Everyone pretty much wants a change and the problem as I see it is I don’t see why anyone whose a desirable candidate and in play for other D1 P6 HC jobs would choose the Pitt job . The program has been nothing better than average , but mostly pathetic since joining the ACC .

Now your starting unsubstantiated rumors about JC .

Why ?

I don’t know why I even respond to you at this point… but…

1. This is a discussion board about Pitt hoops. So we just have to sing kumbaya and say awww everyone is great they’re all gonna get better. Many other people say things about pitt players and you seem to only care about my posts? It’s odd. We have a few who are good enough. Many of them are not. Why is that bad to say?

2. you don’t see a desirable candidate? Between the several threads we’ve had, between me, specialsauce, pittjas and others there’s been plenty of candidates who 1) would take it 2) would do better most likely. Of course there’s no guarantee but this staff is toast and they’re not gonna get it done. We’ve seen enough to realize this.

3. I don’t make up unsubstantiated rumors. Talk to enough people in athletics and you will hear things. The person who told me this has zero reason to lie.

Id like to extend coach Capel a vote of confidence.

In 10 years, he could maybe reach an NIT.
I’d imagine any poll taken by Panther fans would be overwhelming for his removal (>90% ) and without the financial considerations would be a done deal .

I’ve seen 3 lines in 3 different replies that answer the OP perfectly.

She’s already done that.

Votes of confidence mean nothing (and usually mean the opposite)

Kids (recruits) aren’t stupid.

Speaking of ‘recruits’, oh yeah, we have none. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be having the discussion in this thread or countless others discussing the same thing.

There’s no doubt Pitt doesn’t have enough talent to play anywhere near the level we all would like especially with the injury to Nike and Horton’s misstep . With them and had Mintz been signed there would be more W’s and a different buzz around the program. Unfortunately it is what it is .

Those bringing up Julian C absence as the only reason for the win vs St Johns cursorily forget 1 pt loses to both Virginia and Minnesota without Nike and Horton ! I know in your opinion neither of those guys are worth 2 pts /game .

Pitt has played better D recently and very few want to credit the staff for their improved play .

I personally would like to see a new Golden Panther group who could fund the program to actually hire a new coach who’d come in here with the ability to get the players that could turn Pitt back to #1 seeds , but Pitt doesn’t feel the same way .

If someone isn’t willing to put their name on the information their passing on I take little stock in its accuracy.

I’ll be on the outlook for your next positive post on Pitt bb . My guess it will take the firing of JC for that to happen .

I don't know what's taking the Golden Panthers so long. There are 17 booster groups currently legally buying players.

Again you keep harping on me not being “positive”. THERES NOTHING POSITIVE GOING ON RIGHT NOW. If we win some games in the ACC, those will be positive events. If we land a quality recruit, that will be a positive event. How can you possibly be sane and pitt fans to be positive right now?

this also shouldn’t have to be said again but I will. Losing Nike and Horton preseason are not even in the same realm of comparable losses to their best player on the day of the game? You can game plan and strategize for the first. You cannot for the second. Kudos to the boys for capitalizing on the loss of Julian and making Posh a non factor. That’s what you’re supposed to do. More of that and we don’t have many problems. There will be plenty of ACC opportunities to take advantage of positive covid tests. But it may affect us as well.

As for excuses, explain to me why a staff costing almost 5 million dollars needs excuses made for them? They’ve had some bad luck. Tough shit! Have you ever had bad luck at a job and your boss continued paying you a ridiculous salary? Sometimes bad luck follows people for a reason. If he would’ve actually filled the scholarships in year 2 instead of playing with essentially 9 scholarship players we could’ve made an NIT and there would be a lot less critics. That wasn’t bad luck, that was his own doing.

I mean it’s in his OWN BS Todd Graham tag line for this year. WE KEEP OUR PROMISE. We don’t make excuses. But you want to give him outs?

If the season plays out like we think it might with every other Pitt program set to have more big years, not sure how you justify keeping him. You’re essentially only paying him for 1-2 more years than you would be anyways.

I’d imagine any poll taken by Panther fans would be overwhelming for his removal (>90% ) and without the financial considerations would be a done deal .
Then she really shouldnt say anything. She should be looking for the coach right now while waiting till the season is over to fire Capel and immediately replace him. There is no point in hiring someone else to coach this group. Nothing honorable in giving someone you are looking to fire a vote of confidence.

There is nothing HL can do to help Capel. It is Capel’s fault for only landing 1 freshman recruit last year and 0 this year. This is Year 4. Losers make excuses and winners find a way to win.

We need to find a guy who has proven that he could win at a lower level with fewer resources. Steve Forbes at WF is a great example. The ACC is down right now and if we make the right hire (which we can), then we will back to enjoying basketball at The Pete.

I mean, how many more threads like this can we start? We are not miraculously going to go like 12-6 in the ACC.

We are last in almost every RPI type of category in the ACC. We have ZERO players committed for next year. We have been in the bottom 3 of the conference the past 3 years, and it sure looks like this year. The guys are playing hard, yes, kudos to them. But we see this often just leads to complete collapses after falling short more often than not.

What is there to say? Firing Capel does nothing right now, but keeping him for another year just will lead to this same exact threads next year, kicking the can further down the line, pushing the program further down.

It is fait accompli. It's over.

No. You are right. I see my Alma Mater and they are a good team (for here). They have some good guards and a 6'8" and 6'7" Kids underneath (neither D1 though the one is a Soph) and they are blowing out teams by 25 point in the first quarter. If there was any competition, they would be challenged and I am sure some teams will. But the talent is so bad here and has been for awhile.

Just for the sake of it … we’ve been in the bottom three of the conference for the last five years.

My thing is that I totally hate the mid-major lottery ticket. Yea, Forbes/Young, I know. But most fail. If Pitt wins some games in the ACC, I'd rather see Capel coach a starting lineup of

Burton
Femi
Horton
Sibande
Hugley (4 guards, yea, I know)

than a CAA coach with 12 new players

They may win 5-6 ACC games but the CA A coach with 12 new players will win 1-3 so I'd take Hugley over the CAA guy next year. He can wait a year. Hugley is one of the best players to play here in years so I'll take 1 more season of him.

I don’t see Hugley sticking around when Capel is let go.

Lol. He’s a league average center. He is shooting 43 percent which is terrible for a big man. It’s only gonna go down as he always struggles with length and obviously he’ll be one of the shorter centers in the league. He doesn’t block shots so he’s not a rim protector. He is averaging 8 boards a game but that is partly because literally no one else on our team has rebounded until recently. So he’s a slightly above average rebounder. His inefficiency around the rim would be fine if he could shoot but he can’t.

he’s a solid player. certainly not worth keeping a coach over when he might leave anyways. I’d rather have a Keve Aluma, who coincidentally came from a MM lottery ticket.
