What Heather Should Do

They may win 5-6 ACC games but the CA A coach with 12 new players will win 1-3 so I'd take Hugley over the CAA guy next year. He can wait a year. Hugley is one of the best players to play here in years so I'll take 1 more season of him.

So win 5-6 games and then fire him next year AND THEN you have the season with the new young HC in 23-24??? That makes no sense. You’re just delaying your next chance for a good team.

Which is why the rest of this season and how it plays out on the court is pretty meanginless. We know what we have (not much). It’s all about adding talent at this point. It’s not coming from the HS ranks… and no good tranfers are joining a last place ACC team. Which is why it’s over

Lol. He’s a league average center. He is shooting 43 percent which is terrible for a big man. It’s only gonna go down as he always struggles with length and obviously he’ll be one of the shorter centers in the league. He doesn’t block shots so he’s not a rim protector. He is averaging 8 boards a game but that is partly because literally no one else on our team has rebounded until recently. So he’s a slightly above average rebounder. His inefficiency around the rim would be fine if he could shoot but he can’t.

he’s a solid player. certainly not worth keeping a coach over when he might leave anyways. I’d rather have a Keve Aluma, who coincidentally came from a MM lottery ticket.

Can you throw out some names of guys you think would be good here and also might be interested?

Name I keep hearing is Niko Medved. I dint know much about him - what’s the allure with him ?

Yea because I think with Hugley plus an older veteran team, we have a longshot chance at the NCAAT. With the mid-major guy and 12 mid-major transfers, we will win 1-3 ACC games.

If we could get a "guarantee" as a HC. Pitino, Buzz Williams, Turgeon, etc, Im all for firing him. I just dont want a mid-major lottery ticket

Doesn’t really make sense but ok.

I also think we likely have a better shot of keeping Hugley and Femi with a new coach than we do with keeping this staff. Not likely but I could see it. If we roll the same staff out next year I feel like those guys will jump off the sinking ship

Turgeon is a slightly better Stallings in my opinion. Buzz wears out his welcome quick places even though he is a good coach.

No chance we hire Pitino.

I just want someone who can come in here and win.

Medved has quickly turned around programs. Colorado St is undefeated and in the Top 25.

Niko Medved
Ryan Odom
Richie Riley
Todd Golden
Jeff Boals
Dennis Gates

Mark Turgeon!? He was at an elite job, possibly a top 10 job and literally their entire fan base hated him because of his coaching. Not his recruiting. And he won’t have the DMV dream of Maryland to sell here. He would be an awful selection.

Someone in another thread mentioned Medved is interested in Pitt.

What is his system ?

Any legs to that?

I want young and hungry.

Wish we would have gone all in on Oats.

This is pretty much the list we’ve both had for a while. I would put them in a different order but all of those guys would be fine. Riley and Odom would be my top 2 because they’re desperate for ACC jobs. I think Gates is either waiting a HUGE payday or Florida state or else he’d be #1

Yep. Like bballinsider always says, give me someone who is young and wants to end up at Duke/Kentucky or still hasn’t got the big contract yet. That’s what we need.

This rebuild just takes too much energy for these guys with 10mil plus already in their bank accounts just taking jobs because they are bored.

Pitino is the only name of any of those I’d be for. And that’s not happening.

Where Riley from ? I think Odom would kill it here.

What he did at UMBC was really impressive and not just beating UVA.

shows he can recruit to a system and coach.
The pedigree of growing up in an ACC family, having coached at VT, turning around a D2, creating UMBC program and I think he’ll do well at Utah state he’s gonna wanna go scorched earth on Wake and other ACC programs that passed on him. That’s what I want!

Keep up this kind of posting 😉 this is positive Pitt BB posting and how we move forward.

You think he would consider us?

DMV kids want the heck out of there.

I’m a fan, I enjoy watching his team‘s play. Medved is a Minnesota grad and grew up in Minneapolis, not sure how strong his recruiting ties still are in that very fertile area, but he does have 2 current players on his roster from Minnesota.

Someone is going to give him a shot at P5 in the next year or two.

I don’t think we could’ve gotten him at the time. And I expect Maryland to make a huge run at him for about 7-8 mill. I see them hiring Oats or pearl
Pearl?

I can't see him leaving Auburn. He's a celebrity down there living the good life. After Auburn's run in 2019, I think he feels like he can cut down the nets at AU. During his show clause, when he was an analyst on the talk show circuit (I heard him a couple times a week in Nashville) he stated many times that if he was ever in the game again, he was going to recruit the hell out of Georgia. He thought it was possible to win a Natty just by recruiting Georgia. I think he's found his niche and he also seems to be the type that would to prefer to ride it out in one place.

Underarmour connection and is their 2nd choice after Oats per my sources. Not saying he’d take it. But it’s a better job imo

Yeah. I think it's without question a better job. At this point, I think Pearl is such a commodity to where it's irrelevant.

As for Oats, I think his buyout is close to $13 million. He's making $3.2 mil. How much are the Terps willing to pay?

My thing is that I totally hate the mid-major lottery ticket. Yea, Forbes/Young, I know. But most fail. If Pitt wins some games in the ACC, I'd rather see Capel coach a starting lineup of

Burton
Femi
Horton
Sibande
Hugley (4 guards, yea, I know)

than a CAA coach with 12 new players
Nope, not if those 5 are starting but the bench has just some new lottery ticket transfers and no new HS recruits.

They’ll pay a ton.

I get that. Just saying if it were me, I'd save 1 year of buyout money to see what Capel can do with those guys. The mid-major lottery ticket will always be there. And after being so bad for so long, we have a better chance of winning with Capel + those 5 instead of a CAA coach and 12 transfers

Plank is the head of UA and a MD grad. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them make a big splash.

Capel has lost at home to Niagara, Nichols State, St. Francis by 10, Citadel by 15, UMBC by 10 and Monmouth. (and one of the OC was abbreviated,)

That is on poor coaching not talent.

It is foolish to continue his time here.

Most anyone, with any combination of players, would be better.

The guy could not win buying players and coaching in the Patriot League. ( Even with 3 ex-Head Coaches on his bench)

I don’t think it’s worth prolonging any more years and likely a detriment if we do.

Exactly what I was going to say. If the attitude is that he’d be done after another year anyway there’s no point in having another year.

As they say in my favorite movie - They can either get busy living or get busy dying. And even if he does stay some of those kids are gone anyway. Just the way it is.

Watch Heather. Her hire will come from a link to someone she trusts. She may not have connections outside of B1G but other than coach K‘s input ,there probably isn’t anybody on these boards who knows the identity of that person she’s speed dialing.

She worked with Jeff Boals (Current Ohio HC) at Ohio St.
