I didn't notice him out there today, though it's certainly possible he got on the field and I missed it. I have confidence in Webb and Whitehead, but Maddox and Lewis got torched too many times; we're in for some big trouble if man coverage doesn't tighten up in a hurry.

Well, that's not good. Not that a true freshman should be expected to shoulder that much of a load, but something's got to give. Maddox continues to get picked apart down the field.

The main problem today in pass coverage was that neither Webb nor Mitchell could cover anyone. Webb was bad enough at it that he got benched in the middle of a series. Mitchell wasn't any better, so they put Webb back in shortly after. If they are going to run a defense that requires safeties to cover wide receivers one on one they might want to put someone with more cover skills than those two in that position.

Wonder if Stocker, Garner or Campbell can cover

I thought Webb did ok. Not a world burner but I only remember him getting burned on the 4th down conversion.

#5 burned Webb when the ball that was dropped on the last drive.

I thought Lewis and Maddox played well.

I agree it was the safeties they began to pick on. Basically if McSorley had time there was a short completion or a completion in the middle of the field. If there was pressure it was a positive play for pitt.

Our corners played a really good game but our safeties left alot of plays on the field and teams will definitely make them a priority going forward. Where is Stocker I thought he was supposed to be a stud at safety?

It was Webb and the lbs they picked on all day. Obviously when I say safeties whitehead is almost like a do it all for the defense. He is everywhere. PedSU found the weaknesses with Webb and esp. The LBS. The LBS played their b***s off but just aren't athletic enough to consistently stay. With guys like Barkley and #5 in coverage.

Lewis had excellent coverage on that Deep ball where #3 made that one handed catch that was reviewed and I think he was the leading tackler for the game.

Webb was a glaring weakness yesterday. Hamilton is a monster, make no mistake about it, but he absolutely ran by Webb several times yesterday.

Hamlin is injured

Speaking of DBs, I thought Maddox played well, but after rewatching the game, Maddox makes a beautiful jump on the 3rd down when he tips it and #12 catches it for the 1st. However, Maddox made such a nice play on that ball that he actually should have tried to intercept it, and it could have been a pic 6, that would have made it 42-21.

Another what if the PedSU can put in there bag of what ifs.

Pitt's what ifs equal a blowout, PedSUs what ifs equal we may have one.

My mistake I didn't realize Webb had such a bad game.

Crazy thing is I normally am a huge Webb fan, but he struggled yesterday in coverage, IMO.

He played well against Villanova last week and he was in excellent position to knock the ball out of Nova's #5 hands that would of been a huge play. Then the very next play he makes a nice INT. Obviously, this week was a step in talent, but hopefully it was just a few bad plays and he atones next week.

Great post and I think this is where over-recruiting the Corner position pays off! Guys with size and length who can Cover ie; Miller, Coleman and Campbell who will be very important next year...moreso Miller and Coleman who can be converted while Hamlin starts at Corner... Campbell seems more of a run stopper!

-That was a huge lucky break for Penn State on that play. The other huge lucky break was the Penn State receiver that caught that 50 yard pass 1 handed with almost perfect coverage on him. While that will be one of the best catches this entire season in all of football, the likelihood of that play happening again is probably 1 out of 100. Making 50 yard catches 1 handed with great coverage is a fluke and rare. Both of those later resulted in Penn State TD's.

From the Cheat Seats; he won at Richmond last night.

He struggled all game. Watching the game I kept seeing #2 missing assignments and letting receivers get way behind him, PSU just missed hitting the home run over him a couple of times, and he took himself out of position on several run plays. 2 of the 3 LBs weren't doing much better, getting sucked inside their gaps by being too aggressive and undisciplined. Other than the FS and the LBs as a group the D played very well.

Maddox did everything right on that play but failed to finish it. He did try to pick it, that was his intent before the ball was even snapped. He read the screen coming and intentionally backed off his man just enough to bait the throw. As soon as McSorley brought the ball up Maddox broke on it and very nearly ended the game right then and there. That was a veteran, smart play by a CB, and you can bet your ass he'd like to have a do-over on it. It would have been the knockout punch.

-Agreed. Caprara also got burnt a few times. We had trouble with Penn State's big TE which also set up the big Barkley TD. We are selling heavy to stop the run. But we are getting results because we are cleaning house with sacks and forced fumbles. Pitt forced 5 fumbles and recovered 3 of them against Penn State. That is a huge switch from last year already in turnover margin.

As a former ILB myself I always like to watch the backers. Caprara took himself out of many plays by taking that aggressive first step toward the PSU backfield, and PSU took advantage of it by sealing him inside and running it straight to the gap he left. Caprara made a few splashy plays that everyone took note of, but I watched him mess up the small fundamental stuff a number of times. He was too aggressive. We always hear about what an intelligent player he is and how much time he spends breaking down film, so it's hard to understand why he has so many MAs.

And really, even the splashy plays that he made were the two fumble recoveries, and both of those were plays made by someone else (Price on one, and maybe Briggs on the other?) and he just happened to be in the right place at the right time. He had 0 solo tackles and 1 assisted tackle. For a linebacker who plays as much as he does that just is not good enough.

Price and the whole D lime were animals. We got excellent play tangle other end from Blair and Folson. Other than Whitehead the second level guys weren't great. We were definitely cheating with our backers to stop the run, but Caprara and Galambos made a lot of aggressive mistakes out there. Webb had a really bad day.
