when do we start talking about Coaching hire candidates for the hoops team?

It sucks this is where we are at because what an awful year to get into hiring a coach. Probably go bargain shopping with some assistant or a mid major lottery ticket.

Tough with all the schools hiring coaches: Miami, Cuse, UNC, FSU, UVA just from our conference. Maybe VT too. Then you got IU vacant now with a few more like UCF, Butler probable. Maybe even OU and Nova.

As much as I can’t stand Capel, I’d almost rather eat a contract year and leave the Pete empty. With any luck we can get to Dayton and he will float his name around for an opening on his own accord.

Dark horse id like to see hired is Bobby Hurley. He might be gone at ASU, but that was a terrible fit from the start. The Hurleys are east coast guys and might catch lightning in a bottle from him

I live nearby Tempe. Watching one of the local TV news sports broadcasts last night, the ASU AD was being interviewed and asked about Hurley. The AD said "Bobby isn't going anywhere. We are focusing on our next game and how to finish the season strong" (paraphrase of actual quote)

Let their record show (.500 overall; 3-10 in conference) that Hurley might be available

We have a head coach for the next few years at least. Forget that. Look to overhaul the entire coaching assistants, every one of them. Get some assistants in here who can actually coach and teach. We have marginal players for the most part at best and they need coached if they are expected to win in the ACC.

If we can get a really good assistant in the bunch, let him take over the program when Capel is gone in 2 or 3 years. Like when Jamie took over the program when Howland left. It worked before and it can work again.

Not a few years. If Capel doesn't get to the NCAAT, which is almost impossible at this point, he has to make it next year. He and Narduzzi only have 2025-26 to have a good season.

Capel is probably safe this year but if we completely collapse and lose out or go 6-14, especially considering that this roster is reasonably well paid, I wouldn't rule out AD Greene making a move.

As for which coaches are out there

Chris Mack
Will Wade
Mick Cronin
Ryan Odom (probably going to UVa)
Ben McCollum
John Calipari - very unlikely but not impossible if the money is right
Mark Byington
Darian Devries - very unlikely but you need to at least make the call
Jarrod Calhoun - Utah State - from East Liverpool - turned around YSU - Huggins disciple
Nico Medved

And then there's the Buzz Williams to VT WTF hire. Like maybe some of these SEC coaches don't think winning is sustainable in that league. Buzz, Beard, Jans, maybe Calipari

Lots of really good options

Already has. Pining for Sean Miller or BK is underway.
In fairness, I said hire BK as a top assistant and he gets a couple year trial. The post I replied to was about making JC a figurehead HC and hiring new assistants to coach the team. This scenario is probably the best we can hope for, because Capel isn't going anywhere.

I don't think Capel is going anywhere regardless of what happens from here on out this year. Unless there's a booster really motivated and will pony up the money to make it happen.

I'm intrigued by Calhoun and think he might really be a good fit at Pitt. McCollum is a good name. Alan Huss is killing at High Point. Bucky McMillan is intriguing but probably viewed as high risk until he moves out of the SoCon and out of Alabama.

A year too late for DeVries or Byington.

I don't see why a coach would want to leave the SEC. Those coaches are getting a ton of booster support and are really well paid. If the conference can get 12 teams in the dance, it's really not much of a pressure cooker for keeping a job. Beard is the exception. I think he's elite and can land at a place that can pay a lot more than Ole Miss would be willing to for a basketball coach. I could be wrong. I'm shocked with how they have stepped up to build and maintain their football program.

- I think Capel gets another year no matter what but at 5-15 or 6-14, you never know.

- I knew Calhoun was a Huggy guy and I liked that but I thought he went to WVU, which I didn't like. Didn't know he went to Cincy and was from nearby East Liverpool. I like guys who win at multiple levels. He took over a dead program at YSU and built them into one of the top Horizon programs and is winning in Year 1 at Utah State.

- As for Devries and the SEC guys, I think you just have to make those guys say no. Probably not likely we can land them but I always go back to Buzz leaving Marquette for VT. You just never know unless you ask. Does the wife like the town? Do they like their boss? Do they think winning is sustainable? Gotta ask.

Sean Miller sucks. If we're going to can Capel, we should want an actual upgrade.

It would be borderline insane to take a cut in pay.

If they want to use some of their salary to upgrade the roster, it's not something they would want to publicize, as it's prohibited for a coach to give directly to NIL. In reality though, that's not a very hard work around, and some coaches probably find ways to make it happen.

elsewhere someone mentioned Pitino, did they mean dad?

so if giving 2nd and 3rd chances, what about Huggins? just need to give a 4th pass and be ready for more.....or assign 24 hour surveillance

or hire him to work along side JC, can't see Jeff staying and not quitting through that

BTW, I thought Stackhouse was still coaching Vandy and I was thinking he finally got it together but nope. It's JMU coach Mark Byington taking Vandy to the NCAAT in Year 1 with a whole new team. Half the at-large bids will be Year 1 coaches. Again, there's no rebuilding. The expectation is the NCAAT in Year 1. Byington may be National Coach of the Year to get to the NCAAT out of that crazy league.

It really is strange how many Pitt fans would rather have a mediocre Pitt man than an actual good outsider.

See also, Wannstedt, Dave.

There is a very good chance Pitt can do worse than Miller. Looking back, he would have done better than 1 NCAAT in 7 years. And he wouldn't have landed in prison and caused the university to close up shop as some feared.

Pitt absolutely could do worse than Miller. And they just as easily could do better.

But he's a Pitt man, so we are willing to accept his level of mediocrity. Just like so many people did with Wanny.

Nah. No guarantee he is better. When the playing field is level he’s proven to be a below average Xs and Os guy.

We do not have three years in today’s world. It is possible that Pitt could hit rock bottom in 2-3 years.
