Just curious. Did Pitt make the worst hires of the decade in each sport?

But it's the fault of the fans, of course

Hard to have a worse start than when the FIU official announced him as “Isiah Thompson” at the press conference.

Based on the qualifications to originally accept the job, Stallings is the worst of all time, honestly. I'm not even talking about performance. The man was going to be fired for poor performance and he got a better job for more money.

It's beyond the decade timeframe, but Temple football has to be awarded the triple crown for the consecutive hirings of Jerry Berndt, Ron Dickerson, and Bobby Wallace.

How bout anyone who interviewed then hired Paul Hackett as a head football coach? USC gets into that club too.

I would say the people at USC were even worse than the people at Pitt. At least at Pitt Hackett could sell being a well thought of offensive coordinator who had not had the chance yet to lead his own program. USC got to watch what Hackett was actually like as a head coach, and decided to hire him anyway.

For as dumb as the people at Pitt were, the people at USC were dumb squared.

Stallings and Haywood were bad hires for very different reasons though. Anyone who looked at Stallings, and his situation at Vandy, had to know he was likely to fail here. Unlike the Nostradamuses on this board, I admit to having no idea how Haywood would have fared as coach, and neither do they. The problem with Haywood is that Pitt failed to vet him properly. It was his messy personal life that made him an unacceptable choice to lead the football team, not his coaching background.

He hired an 80 year old coordinator and referenced Freddy Kreuger in his welcome press conference. We are unbelievably LUCKY he beat the shit out of (one of) his baby mama and she called the police.

Yeah they Haywood hire is in a league of its own. It was just so brief it's hard to put it into context with any of the other examples posted.

Anyone the Browns hire to do anything at least deserves an honorable mention.

Oh the limited exposure we had to mike Haywood showed that it would have been a disaster. You’re just going to have to take that on faith. It wouldn’t have turned out well for us.

Gallagher and Barnes

2 things... some of the guys on that list actually won games in the short time they were there, idk if stallings is #1 but he definitely should be higher.

Then there's Mike Haywood. I really don't care about the people who claim we don't know how good he may have been. The fact is he was hired here and because of something stupid he did lasted about a week, which was over Christmas break. You can not convince there has ever been a hire worse than that. Mike Haywood, worst hire of all time in the history of collegiate athletics.
