Does Sirvocea Dennis have the option to sit out the bowl game because he might blow out a knee and ruin his chances to play at a high level next year? If he makes that decision does he lose his scholarship? Not picking on Sirvocea, just using him as an example. Can any underclassman make such a decision? My point is that I think voluntarily sitting out a game is turning your back on your teammates, no matter what your eligibility is.
