Barry Bonds was mvp runner up twice......

Seven mvps....2 more runners up.

And yet.....one of our yinzer geniuses on this board called him over rated.

Let that marinate for a while.......

Bonds was a better OVERALL baseball player in a pirates uniform. In San Fran he racked up a bunch of homers but a lot of his other skills started to suffer. In Pittsburgh he was a complete 5 tool player that could hit for power and average, steal bases, etc.

No one is debating this.

I'm merely calling out anyone claiming binds was over rated

So after 9 pages, did we get an answer yet? Anyone think of any of those early 90's pens? Obviously #66 is out but what about some others? Francis, Coffey, Stevens, any of those guys over rated? I don't think so. Id say Robbie brown but he wasn't really "valued" by pens fans too highly, I mean he put up some good goals totals but I think anyone who has ever watched hockey realize he basically sucked and was surrounded by talent..

Outside of Barrasso, any one think any of those pens players may be a little to beloved by the fans? Ulfie?

I believe, ultimately, the answer is 42.

Jackie Robinson? dude, I don't think you are allowed to say that, not in today's age.

He wasn't even close to best black player in 1947, they just picked him because of image, they wanted safe, UCLA grad, military officer, someone that would be willing to keep his mouth shut and take abuse.

are you calling Jackie Robinson an "uncle Tom?" Dear lord, what's happening here. Next thing I know, someone is gonna say Rosa Parks sat in the front because she was too tired to walk to the back of the bus..

Is nothing sacred anymore? hey, on a side note, is sitting in the front of the bus vs the back, Really that much better? I've been on plenty of buses, I am no big fan of the front. I'd pick the middle actually but the back is where the cool kids sat in grade school.

How did Jackie Robinson come into a discussion of Pittsburgh athletes? In any event, given the context that has just been raised (including the references to Rosa Parks and Robinson's service as an Army officer), you might find this part of Robinson's history interesting:

uh, no. can you elaborate?
I apologize for bringing geekiness into this forum....42 is the answer to the universe from the before mentioned Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It is the ultimate answer to everything and thus has to reflect the most overrated athlete in the history of Pittsburgh (or for anywhere else for that matter)....now back to the basement of the science building for me...

Read up on it. Not saying he's an Uncle Tom, but they definitely didn't want a guy like Snoop Dogg or Malcom X, they wanted someone that wouldn't misbehave or even fight back even if the opponents called him N----r, which they did. They wanted a perfect role model type that white people couldn't say "I told you so" if he'd misbehave.
I know, I am just kidding around. I saw the movie, Harrison ford delivering the line of Being strong enough to not fight back, of course more eloquently worded.

I am sorry I entered this discussion late, but how in the world did the topic go from "Overrated Pittsburgh Athlete" to "Jackie Robinson"? SMH

well we are on the 9th page so any relevant topics/answers has been covered. when a thread goes this long on the pantherlair, it is a good chance that it's gotten far off the topic.

One of the great qualities of the University of Pittsburgh is its celebration of diversity. The Nationality Rooms in the Cathedral of Learning come to mind. Please do not tarnish our great University. You graduated from Pitt, not Penn State.

Jackie Robinson probably overrated as a baseball player, but way underrated as an all around athlete.

I think he's still the only 4 sport letterman at UCLA and he was far more than just occasional player. All conference in football and won the long jump as well. Baseball probably wasn't even his best sport.

Guy should be mentioned in the discussion with Jim Thorpe when it comes to talking about greatest all around athletes ever.

All of the nonsense about Jackie Robinson, 42, Uncle Tom, Snoop Dogg, etc. This thread got more off course than the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria.
Huh????

So what exactly does any of that light hearted joking around have to do with "diversity" and the Pitt Nationality Rooms?

You're not making any sense. It's just FUN, harmless banter.

He played pro football in the Pacific Coast Football League, before the NFL had west coast teams, for the LA Bulldogs.

buccos should have gone after Gibson.. who cares if he was bat S**t crazy, dude had over 900 hrs. think some of these bucco teams in the 40's could have used 900 HRs? I think so..

Not only did the NFL not have any West Coast teams at the time, that was also during a 13-year period when the NFL excluded black players. Both situations ended when the Cleveland Rams moved to Los Angeles. The City of Los Angeles was not going to permit the Rams to play in the Coliseum unless they integrated the roster, so they signed two of Robinson's UCLA teammates, Kenny Washington and Woody Strode.

Proved to be a bran tumor, which caused his premature death.
geez, did not know that. my dad used to tell me my grandpa and my oldest uncle would see him play quite often. he was the biggest show in town for awhile it seems..

Somebody equated SNOOP DOGG with Malcolm X in terms of being the antithesis of an Uncle Tom? You CAN'T be serious. The way Snoop glorifies the whole mindset of (N-word), he's as much an Uncle Tom as the original from the cabin in my book. .

They portrayed Snoop and his family to be like Leave it to the Beaver on ESPN

How many Republican profs in the Journalism dept? Any conservatives teaching History classes...Yep, diversity in all things but thought (where is should be in colleges, no?) . We used to "celebrate" unity...that whole crazy melting pot thingee.

That's your opinion, and it's not wrong. That type of home run hitter doesn't come around every day. And hgh or not you gotta have great hand eye coordination. He won mvp's with both teams, he was just a different type of player at both. He wasn't gonna put up insane home run numbers in Pittsburgh, but he was still one of the best 5 tool players in the game.

Snoop is a good father and family man and does a lot of good in his community, but the USA is screwed up and thinks people like him are "bad" and assholz like Evangelical Christians are "good".

Bonds was great as a Pirate. Was obviously a different type of player than his Roided up balloon headed days as a Giant but a great player still. Probably the best in the game even at that point as an all around player.

His playoff performances though.... :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
