Who should we root for in the National Championship Game?

Ohio state so the fans can rip on their title winning coach next year when he loses to Michigan again

I was a semi ND fan as a catholic kid (behind Pitt of course). Tyrone, Fat Charlie, and Brian Kelly killed all of that and made me root for anyone against ND always.

Their current coach seems like a good dude and much of the former ND mystique is largely gone. I think they have paid enough penance to root for them against "Thee" Ohio State University.

I think they will get the doors blown off...
But Ohio State is the new ND in terms of media ball washing.

Play like a champion today boys!

It's going to be annoying hearing about how bad the Big Ten is next season after it wins the last two national titles, had four different teams in its conference in the past two final fours, had the #1 team in the country most of the year (a fifth team - different from the aforementioned four), etc. But make no mistake: we'll be told the ACC is the better conference again next season.

Notre Dame gave me the favor I desired last game. I still despise the team, although Marcus Freeman is likeable. They need to join a conference and stop thinking they are something special. This team still rides on the glory of days gone by. They should not get 20 million because they are independent, while all others must share their CFP revenue. Now, I am no big 10 fan, but I do have two nieces going to thee Ohio St. University so I can now defend my allegiance. Go Buckeyes! Remind Notre Dame that they don't have the 4 horseman anymore!

Back in the day, before ESPN and all of the other cable networks, there were maybe only 3 or 4 nationally televised games on Saturday. The only time Pitt was on national TV is when we played ND or Penn State. BUT ND was always on TV thus a plus for recruiting. Today, every major team is on TV every Saturday. The playing field has changed.

This is the kind of game — matching two teams that I generally dislike — that I usually don’t know in advance who I will root for to win. I start watching it and then sometime in the first quarter I begin rooting for one team.

This time, although I will do that, I suspect that the first time I see a shot of Ryan Day on the sidelines, I will start rooting for ND. I can’t explain what it is, but there is something about him that makes it very hard to root for a team he is coaching.

I also am impressed with Marcus Freeman as a coach and human being. I like what he says when he is being interviewed. It’s not always typical football coach non-speak. I also like the fact that he is an Army brat (ok Air Force brat) from a mixed family.

Begrudgingly it's the Irish because they play a ton of ACC teams. If they're somehow defending champs, ACC gets a ton of hype when anyone plays them.

tOSU seems likely to handle them easily though.

Would be funny to see a team that lost to a 7-5 (4-4) MAC team win it too. Has a team ever won a national chsmpionship that lost to a non P4/P5 team in the non conference?

For anyone that thought the new playoffs would hinder ND and force them to join a conference....well that argument is over. Now will money eventually force their hand? Perhaps but it hasn't as of yet.

They got a heck of a deal. Get all the money and get to play a home game. That bye week is pretty significant as does homefield in college. The system forces Notre Dame into both of those things.

As much as much as I dislike how Notre Dame has worked the system to allow themselves to stay independent and act like college football royalty in a world where everyone else relies on conference TV money; I like the precedent that would be set by the team that paid out the most NIL money running away with the championship even more.

Penn State followed by NIL Champion Ohio State in the playoffs is probably the only one two punch that could have got me to root for Notre Dame 2 games in a row.

Why would they give up the situation they have? If the ACC tossed them out, other leagues would offer the same or better deal. Only psu is ahead on my hate list more than ND. But they get what they want.

I hate Brian Kelly… He’s an arrogant douche bag that said he couldn’t win a National Championship at ND. It would give me great pleasure to see him look like a stupid jackass…

1. Ohio, well, I have worked with a lot of the workers over there, and they are generally good people if you can keep them off the subject of Steelers/Brown.
2. I can't think of any group of ND fans I could fit in with
3. PSU fans are so jealous, they are deluded enough to feel that their program is morally superior to OSU, so go Buckeyes and listen to cult degrade the NC all year.

The ACC to Notre Dame is like being some schlub "dating" a stripper.
She gives you a few lap dances, but expects a big tip.
She hits you up for rent money while pulling in six-figures.
She can't date you because it would mess up her dancer contract at the Naughty Babe Cabaret.
Her "mother" is always in town so she can't join you for dinner.
And as soon as she can no longer keep up with her contemporaries and support herself, she's going to run straight for that 60-year old Commish with a Harvard Law Degree to settle down with after blocking your number.

I think I lost the plot in there right around the time I was trying to come up with a strip club with NBC initials.

Notre Dame. Love the coach, fun to think of Brian Kelly jealous, no Big 10 winner, fun to watch Ryan Dey pouting

My uncle went to Ohio state and he cut my mother out of my gram gram's will, f*ck the buckeyes. Go irish

We owe them both our thanks for not having to see more PSU.

During the old format, OSU usually ended their visions of being nationally relevant. Under the new format, ND saved us from it continuing. The winner is a deserving champion!

I would prefer ND to win because we play them next year. Also, I like Freeman to some extent.

Having said that, I fear that ND will have little chance. My understanding is that ND lost their starting LT to injury from the last game. I think LT is the most important blocker in order to protect the QB. Additionally, the RT is hobbled. In addition, OSU has very good DE's. This could be a rough outing for the Irish and Riley Leonard.
