Whose idea was it to play in a tropical location with no air conditioning?

I wouldn't say that's the problem as much as them not getting the court ready for any possible scenario. They playing sporting events anywhere anymore, and most times there is much extra work needed to make the venue suitable for play. They seemed to just play this game in the gym how it normally is.

The humidity was making the floor moist.

Not to mention, it was 80 degrees with 100% humidity at game time! I'd imagine this kind of weather isn't a new thing for Okinawa either. People should have known this ahead of time and figured out if the conditions would be playable.

The organizers of these events have really jumped the shark with some of these made for TV games.

Should've been a scenario they considered. Obviously they would need more fans if that's what they were going to use, or maybe even ESPN not only make the game playable that they want to broadcast but donate to a Marine base and pay to have an a/c unit installed at the arena!

I miss that Jay Paterno thread - only thread I can ever remember that EVERYONE who commented agreed with each other.

Honestly, WTF? Somebody needs fired for this. There are military bases all over the world and they choose a base that has a gym with no AC.
I think Veterans are getting a chuckle out of your anger. It's a game while they have to fight in these conditions.

Yeah it's a shame because I thought it was a pretty cool event. Honestly I think if this game was not in front of a crowd of Marines, it would've been called halfway through the first half.

If this game wasn't in front of a crowd of military personnel, it would not have been played. It is just a marketing gimmick for ESPN. Just like games on aircraft carriers or wherever, these sites are just props. Sports used to be about the games. Now, the games are becoming secondary to the marketing. Call me cynical, but that is how I see it.

Hard to disagree. Look at all the stories that came out regarding the NFL and the salutes/tributes to the military. Shameful.

Not wrong. I'm just saying if there was a game tonight that wasn't in front of a military crowd where the court was that bad, it would've been called much earlier. Whether that had been Pitt vs. Gonzaga, Duquesne, St. Francis, or Chattanooga.

I don't disagree with the marketing either, but if you look at pro sports (the highest level), it's much more than marketing. It's near WWE the way they push storylines every week that convenientally just fall into place.

I was stationed in Okinawa in the Army. I spent 14 months there, 3-plus in Vietnam and two weeks in Thailand. We used to play pickup basketball at the gyms in Okinawa. None of them had a/c and for most of the year the humidity and heat made the floors like skating rinks. We had a rule that there were no traveling violations as long as you dribbled at all because it was too hard not to travel.

Obviously, nothing has changed. That gym still had no a/c and the humidity turned it into a slippery lake. I can't describe how humid it gets there, and it is worse at the Marine bases on the northern end of the island because they have deliberately kept the surrounding jungles since the area is used for jungle fighting training exercises.

I don't know if ESPN or the NCAA was responsible for this, but obviously some idiot picked Okinawa without checking the conditions.

Another example: I played on a championship fast pitch softball team there. We played in the less humid season which meant the humidity was around 80%. The umpire would put a new ball in play every second inning because after two innings the ball would be waterlogged.

Even with a/c it could be unbearable there. I lived in a BOQ (Bachelor Officers Quarters) building which had water cooled a/c. They ran pipes filled with cold water through the building. But it didn't work too well. I sometimes slept in my car because it was more comfortable. As a lieutenant I was entitled to ship a car there free so I shipped over my 1961 Chevy Impala convertible...with the snow tires still on it. Most of the officers bought small Japanese cars while they were there, but which weren't very comfortable to sleep in. By comparison my car was like a 4-star hotel.

The humidity in the area of Vietnam I was in wasn't as bad because it was a mountainous area in the north away from the sea. However, being in a tent with two other lieutenants had one big disadvantage also: being shelled nightly by the NVA. When I returned to Okinawa and the poorly functioning a/c system, somehow it didn't seem nearly as bad as it had before I went on temporary duty to Vietnam

They thought the camouflage uniforms would provide traction. Travel half way across the world for that....

amazing, ESPN couldn't afford a couple of these units? Bummer because Pitt was playing well, would have been even better if the guards were able to stop and cut...
