Why Dixon Can't Recruit

What I am about to express is an accumulation or facts plus observations I have made over the years. In advance, I will not debate with any of you, almost all of whom I respect, regarding my comments going forward.
Keep in mind that I do not have a dog in the race. I realize that I have no power to bring changes to the institution I love. I am a Pitt grad and will always support the university. I do not like nor do I dislike our basket-
ball coach. I am just relating what my senses tell me.
Several years ago my wife and I went to the basketball "FANFEST" at the Pete. We walked up to the table where Jamie Dixon was sitting, shook hands with him and attempted to engage him in conversation. This turned out to be Mission Impossible. There were no others at or near his table. He seemed to be disinterested. If so why was he there? After all it was for the fans was it not? We walked away in disbelief and just assumed he was having a really bad day.
Since then I have watched JD closely, at Pete games, on television, and on the internet because I enjoy Pitt basketball. I wish I could state otherwise but in my judgment, JD has personality issues. Watch him in a press conference. He does not and cannot maintain good eye contact. This is not an opinion, it is a fact. Over the years, I've estimated that he maintains eye contact about 20-25% of the time during interviews. He looks down at the floor or away from the person to whom he is responding. Andy Toole, the RMU coach, in an interview leading up to the Colonials NCAA play-in game, was about 85-90% with his eye contact.
Why do I mention this and consider it an issue? The reason being, I feel that this is the biggest drawback to JD's recruiting. His actions result in many negative connotations. If I am a parent sitting in my living room or in JD's office because he is seriously recruiting my son to play for him, it is game over. Having worked in HR for a large Pittsburgh corporation, I lectured at campuses, including Pitt, and covered resumed writing, appearance, handshakes, and yes, eye contact. The latter was overwhelmingly the largest negative with department heads who were evaluating my "recruits". Poor eye contact eliminated more than one hopeful candidate. I know this to be unequivocally true.
If my son is being recruited by Thadd Matta, Shaka Smart, Jay Wright, Bill Self, Tom Izzo, John Thompson, Jr. etc., how do they stack up against JD? Or compare him to ACC coaches: Mike K., Roy Williams, Danny Manning, Rick Pitino, and Tony Bennett. Just watch JD in almost any post-game news conference. It isn't even close! He doesn't stack up with these other coaches regarding eye contact. Oh sure, he'll get some decent recruits from time to time, but why does he miss so frequently on better recruits? JD needs to look in the mirror. If I am Scott Barnes, the new AD at Pitt, JD is going to sit down with some professional individuals from the Pitt faculty/hospitals to work on improving his eye contact. Also, he's going to work on his public speaking. People in positions of power at the university should be concerned with a D1 coach, who makes 2.5M a year, having such poor eye contact, plus his hemming and hawing jibberish (Well we...we…ah…ah…we). To many he does not appear to be outgoing and confident, but evasive and skittish.
Take for example, when JD is carping at the refs because one of his players is getting abused by an opponent. When the ref approaches, what does JD do? Almost without exception, he goes into his signature baseball catcher's crouch so he is not face-to-face and eyeball-to-eyeball with the ref and looks up at him like
a misbehaving puppy. Does this inspire confidence in him by his players? No! Most coaches at times will purposefully take a T by arguing more, as a motivation for his team. When is the last time you can recall JD first for all, eyeballing a ref nose-to-nose and then taking a T, even when comfortably ahead? I can't recall, myself. Is this what one would call "having his players' backs?" No! It's as though he is afraid of the refs; all they have to do is approach him and down he goes! These are the things preventing Pitt from getting better recruits. JD is his own worst enemy and it's not his assistants who are failing at recruiting because JD is the closer. Things will not change unless he changes. If he doesn't or can't, well that's another story.
A recent occurrence is what impelled me to write this out. A friend had a nephew visit Pitt this past season for one of Pitt's Junior Days. The young man is a talented player and is receiving interest from D1 schools. During coffee, it was mentioned that the nephew, in fact, was at Pitt. In response to my question of how the visit went, my friend, shaking his head from side to side said, "He loved all of the assistant coaches but he did not like JD." I didn't have the inclination to say what I just wrote. If a junior in high school can read JD then so can desirable top-level recruits and their parents/guardians (think Mustapha Heron's dad)! This is why Jamie Dixon is not a good recruiter. It's his personality, specifically the horrendous eye contact! This is hurting the Panthers. Pitt's fans, students and players deserve better. No time like the present.
JD had only 5 quality wins this year - Kansas State, Notre Dame, Syracuse twice and North Carolina. He had 13 of his 19 wins against rent-a-victims. He lost to Hawaii, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Miami, Florida State and George Washington. So much for the 20-win seasons. His last 5 games, all losses, were to teams that did not make the big dance. Better recruiting would improve this.
As mentioned, there will be no response from me to your replies. Call me anything you care to. Say I'm a troll, a Hoopie, insane, whatever. I have no hatred for JD. I ask you only to go back and watch any interviews, games, press conferences, etc from this season or earlier. It's right there before one's eyes and is undeniable, Compare JD to other coaches you see. My power of observation is no better or worse than yours. Please, just don't deny this continual recruiting snafu and the reason(s) it occurs. Pitt can't regularly get stellar recruits because of JD. It's not that they dislike JD's offense or defense, the recruits and their parents just don't like him! Would you feel comfortable in the presence of a coach who has such poor eye contact? Also, don't blame JD's assistants, poor recruiting is not their fault. JD can't close when it matters which is sad because he is the closer! To me the gig is up and it is time for changes! Time will tell. Hail to Pitt!

First off ... "no dog in the race?" Umm ... sure you do! To you: "the gig is up!" Good sir, THAT is a dog in the race. Actually, nearly every bit of your post is a "dog in the race." The better description of your post is a vendetta, actually.

And despite everything you've chalked up as "facts plus observations," you also missed one very important thing that is a fact. He's had a TON of success. He has recruited many good players. Those facts lie in direct contrast to your various assertions. You might even wonder how a coach with all the shortcomings you've asserted ever won a single game. But he's won plenty, now hasn't he.

Regardless, I've talked to Dixon probably about 50 times since he has been named Head Coach. I can say with certainty that there hasn't been a single time that he hasn't "made good eye contact." This includes the first time that I met him which occurred about one month after he was hired up until a conversation I had with him in Maui. He has always been extremely engaging with my wife and especially with my Son. I will also report that he can by a little bit coy at times, and even demonstrate a certain measure of arrogance.

I can also relate direct personal stories from an individual and family who was recruited by Dixon. Their experience with Dixon was excellent.

I do not deny our recruiting problems. They are real and the results of the last season clearly demonstrate that.

However, I can say with a fair amount of certainty that Dixon has a certain style. People in the SID office would tell you the same. He tells kids like it is. He tells them he wants them to go to class. He tells them about how he wants them to represent the University, as he takes them to meet the Chancellor. He tells them he want them to learn Pitt Basketball and that playing time would be handed out if not earned. He tells them they will play defense. Something else people in the SID have told me is that Dixon won't break the rules. In fact, he won't even really bend the rules, perhaps even in certain situations where the rules could be bent to something of a positive affect, so to speak.

Some have made the assertion that he's not a good salesman, or not a good closer. In some respects, I might even agree this is true. In short, he's only trying to "sell" to the folks who are already a good match for what he has and what he wants.

Is this a weakness? Well, perhaps, but this recruiting style served him well for quite some time. It's allowed him to select players who bought into what he wants. And for many of Dixon's years, these players have performed at high levels.

But without a doubt, there has been more of a struggle to obtain the same equation of players as of late. There are many reasons for this, some of which are almost certainly somehow related to player's reactions to the Coaches' personality.

Otherwise, I realize that you've indicated that you won't reply and that is your right. It's also your right to have the opinion that Dixon should not longer be our coach. You aren't the only one with this opinion right now.

But to say that your post about eye contact "is a fact" is simply not accurate. In FACT, it's not even close to that.

I have also talked to Coach Dixon on numerous occasions(not as many as DT) and I also have found Coach to be very engaging and friendly. No problems with eye contact whatsoever.

Wow, I'm just speechess.

I've never had any more conversation with Dixon than a nod or a "Good game Coach" but I know people who do know him and have spoken to him at FanFests, at the ProAm, at Maui, on recruiting visits etc. I've watched him talk with fans at various functions, including BlueGold games and has always been gracious and friendly. I don't get autographs, but my wife and daughter were always pleased with their FanFest interactions with Jamie.

I or people in my family know people who deal with Dixon on a non-basketball basis. He is described as going out of his way to be friendly and as a genuinely nice guy.

As a recruiter, he is painfully honest, refusing to blow smoke and being very explicit about what he and Pitt expect.

I've NEVER heard anything like this poster recounts. I gotta call "BS" on this, particularly the part where the poster can't recall a single time Dixon ever got in a ref's face. Did he watch any game this past season?

In the long history of this board, has there ever been a post before that was so long and that claimed to be based only on "the facts" (rather than someone's opinion) that was so completely and utterly devoid of "the facts"?

I can understand why someone who made a post like that wants everyone to know ahead of time that he won't be responding to what anyone else posts. God knows, if I posted something so inane I wouldn't want to have to defend it either.

I was standing next to him the much hated Bill Barton at Greentree and both were very engaging don't think your observation is Pitts problem in recuirting.

I think the difference between Dixon and 99% of the rest of the college coaches out there is that he is honest to a fault. He makes it painfully clear to recruits what his expectations are and that they are non-negotiable. That isn't the case with most other coaches. They'll tell a recruit what he wants to hear if it means they get a recruit. That's not JD's style.

As for the remarks about eye contact, they are totally inaccurate with Dixon. I've known the guy and have found him totally engaging, fun to be with, and his family is the definition of class as he is. Judging a man's character based on eye contact reveals your HR prejudice and limitations. It's very short-sighted and off-base. Your conclusions are understandably inaccurate and you have totally misjudged the man.

I suggest that you concentrate more on your job and improving in that area, where there is a lot of room for improvement, and less on judging what is perceived by only you as a flaw in a man's character. Psychology and sales psychology in sports in particular are not your strong suits.

Such total pomposity!! JD isn't perfect....his postgame interviews are awful, still pumping adrenaline. There's a reason he gets commentator slots on TV...he communicates easily, clearly, and obviously with great insight. Personally, he's engaging & friendly. Your lab(s??) deserve better.

Based on my years observing message board behavior and having the benefit of a Pitt psych degree, it appears the poster is displaying signs of depression while projecting his feelings of inadequacy onto our coach. In fact, it's quite disturbing, but don't ask me to defend my comments. I'm going to run away and hide now. Toodles.

I spoke with Coach Dixon once and was shocked at how great he was in person. I have seen the interviews and yes he really sucks at them. In person he was great. He was thrilled my daughter was entering the Zoo the following year. Suggested that she consider trying to become a team manager and talked about a kid she went to high school with who he recruited. A normal human being.

But I do HATE Bill Cowher because one time when I walked by him at a soccer game and said hey, he completely ignored me. Its why he had to retire from coaching. LOL

That's a good, fair and informative post right there. I have my criticisms of JD's recruiting, but those criticisms aren't based on the qualities of the man himself. I also don;t believe he suddenly forgot how to coach, or that his system that has made him so successful suddenly doesn't work in the ACC. We just need the right players, which is on him to fix. Doesn't mean he needs to go out and get a bunch of top 50 kids, but one or two of those types to go with a tough, solid core of "Dixon-style" kids would really help. Nice to hear personal experiences from someone who actually has some insight on JD's style and methodology.

Dopiest post I've ever seen.

There isn't one person I've ever talked to that's encountered Dixon who hasn't said exactly opposite of the drivel and nonsense you posted.

The personality of a coach plays a vital role in recruiting. This is undeniable. I think Jamie is a very good coach and probably a better person but he doesn't have an outgoing personality, so yes, I do think that goes against him in living rooms. Its not the be all-end all but it can be a disadvantage.

Think of it this way, if you started a company and needed to hire a salesman. Would you hire:

a) Jay Wright
b) JT3
c) Buzz Williams
d) Jamie Dixon

Jamie just doesn't have that kind of personality. Again, this isn't to say we have no hope because of that. Its just a challenge he has to overcome. Look at Matta at Ohio State. He has no personality but their players are paid amongst the best so he's able to overcome that. Rick Barnes doesn't have much of a personality but always recruits embarrassingly well.

I guess I kind of understand what you are saying, but if Jamie has no personality why does he keep getting CBS gigs, commercials etc? I would think that if he truly was as bad as some think, these opportunities wouldn't be so available. I think this stuff is overrated, he might not have the used car salesmen personality, but he's not as bad of a recruiter as this board thinks he is.

I agree with you on this, actually.

Why do you have to apologize to agree with something I have said? Does my criticisms of Pitt BB make me that much of a bad dude, a pariah? I don't get it. Just because I think the direction of the program is heading in the wrong way, doesn't make me a bad person. It is not a character flaw. I could be right. I also could be wrong. But it is my opinion. Dave, you know on that OTHER secret board, most of those guys share my concerns, so it is not like I am someone trying to troll or flame just to be a contrarian.

Where is an apology? I was saying I agreed with your point. And your point had nothing to do with Pitt BB -- it was about keeping a thread on the board. I agree completely agree. I just don't know how your read it otherwise.

I worry about you Owtie!

Because its not as if he has a "bad" personality. And its not as if he's a bad public speaker. He's just nowhere near th e level of some other coaches. Again, its not the be-all, end-all. He's a known name, a really good respected coach and because of that, he'll always get TV gigs, commercials, and recruits. But again, if Jay Wright, Buzz Williams, and Jamie Dixon apply for an ESPN job, Jamie isnt going to get it. But that doesnt mean he cant win the ACC or make a Final Four. He just needs a really strong recruiter on staff and has to get a little lucky out there.

Maybe Dixon didn't engage with you and your wife as much as you would have liked because he had to use the restroom. Not every brief personal interaction in life is worthy of such in depth psychological analysis. Hopefully you will find help for your sensitivity issues.

Smfraud obviously never met Dixon which is why his post about Dixon's personality I'd total horse manure. Or maybe just one more chance for a real pedophiles st fan to dig into anything Pitt any time day or night.
