Why I just don't like college football anymore .

FFFShL7Tl3sW.jpeg
Insane. Hate to make this semi political but we have all kinds of problems in this country and people who need help. (See NC where people are still homeless fro Helene)

It’s a free country and people with FU money can spend it any way they want but I find it disgusting that people are throwing many at 18 year olds so their sports ball team
Will win

We need more people like this

Just another reason to not watch college football. People have their priorities all screwed up, giving money to NIL and crap like the 412 Alliance or whatever it is. No more.

What do you think was going on in the 70’s and 80’s with the Golden Panthers? What about the whole SWC and everywhere else?
I was a youngster during all that, so I may have heard wrong therefore have my facts screwed up. My understanding of back then is: Dad got a new job, player got a nice ride and a few thousand dollars pocket money every so often .

Even with inflation taken into account, that is a far cry from paying these insane numbers that are floating out there. And this is not jealously speaking, rather my sensibilities not matching current society trends. I say that as a person who felt that these players should have gotten paid a decent stipend, and a proponent of a true NIL where if Larry Fitzgerald sells a million #1 jerseys during a Heisman campaign, he gets a cut. I am 100% against this nonsense we are seeing now, where everyone is a free agent EVERY DAMN SEASON.

What you are saying is absolutely true. It was still a lot different compared to what is going on now though. Back then, once you got the signature on signing day, they were yours for their entire college career, for the most part. And it wasn't so much open bidding to sign players as it was "taking care of them" once they were on campus. Programs really tried to keep things on the down low & it wasn't anywhere near as excessive & sloppy, because there were consequences if you got caught. You didn't have to worry about a Biletnikoff Award winner leaving after 2 years for greener pastures.

What we currently have is basically pro sports with unrestricted free agency, no salary cap, and no contracts. It's insane.

Current NIL structure is literally the functional equivalent of Bob Nutting asking for money to sign players. He’d like that arrangement I suspect.

This is all a house of cards that will fall when really rich people get tired of playing kids to play a sport with no quid pro quo.

I've chosen to just root for other teams, since Pitt ain't it these days. I put all 134 teams on a map on my wall, blindfolded myself, and threw five darts at it. Looks like my new teams are Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama, Texas, and Michigan.

Don't know much about any of them, so I just hope my teams don't stink!

Pitt football is dead as a national brand, if it ever got any life in its very brief 4-5 year heyday in the 70's. Modern college football has consolidated all resources towards the national brands.

The ACC will wither and die soon and Pitt needs to figure out what it's future will be. Given the past 80-90 years, they will probably go to some mid-major conference, keep playing at Acrisure in front of 30k Pitt fans except when ND/PSU/WVU come in for a free win at an effectively neutral site game.

My take is that they should just take the L and scale down. It seems like WVU is getting tired of the B12. Maybe Pitt, WVU, Cuse and BC can all start over and bring in UConn, Buffalo, Marshall and Temple and just create a nice local conference where games mean something because of rivalry, so you can still draw 30K at a small, cheap on campus stadium. Never play ND or PSU again in anything and effectively kill those rivalries which have done nothing but hurt Pitt athletics.

Try to be a big fish in a small pond. Pitt's market and alumni base may allow it to grow into a winner over time. Who knows what cfb will look like in the future?

One thing is certain. Pitt has been defining itself as the little brother of legit programs for decades and the results have been predictable and most Pitt fans can only stomach it for so long. The cost of such an Identity has gone up and the benefits have gone away. This is the perfect time for a major evolution in vision.

Yeah, nothing will scream "meaningful game" to Pitt fans like Buffalo and Temple coming to town will.
The flipside is true too. What screams meaningful game to anyone when Pitt comes to town other than WVU and older Penn St fans not from WPA?

If you're a young PSU fan from Scranton/Philly/wherever other than WPA, what the hell is Pitt to you?

Outside of WVU and a portion of PSU fans, Pitt is a NPC unless we are having a magicical year and since 1982 we have only had 4 of those seasons.

You want to spend 300 million dollars for a cheap on-campus stadium to play Marshall, Temple, Buffalo, etc…. 😂

Here’s a better idea. Spread that 300 million dollars out over a 20 year span and use it towards landing the best players possible while playing big boy football.

You are dancing to a different tune than most Pitt fans as of today.

However, give it some time. Another crap season by this HC, more losses to the portal, more signings of guys who turned down Middle Tennessee State,

And the dance floor will fill up rather quickly.

Then why are you reading and posting on a college football message board? Complaints about societal priorities and sports is nothing new. Complaints of paying players goes back to the early 1900s.

The lack of self awareness is hilarious. It's all good as long as it is someone else's money.

Your lack of self awareness is displayed too. I realize I'm straddling both sides of the line.

The best way I can state my stance is:

I'm not above playing in the mud, but I am above playing in poop.

Not sure how serious this talk of a college football commissioner is but I think it would be a great idea, and I think Saban would be the perfect man for the job. Somebody needs to take the bull by the horns here and he’s well suited for that.

LMFAO. Let me guess, it was only mud when it was behind closed doors. Now that it is out in the open, it is poop. But mostly, people that never put their own skin in the game are uncomfortable with being asked to now. Always better when it is someone else's money paying for the satisfaction of celebrating wins.

Hey, I don't come on here and insult others just for stating a well founded opinion. And I'm not on the college football board all that much because of the state of college football and the mess. I'd appreciate if you'd keep your insults to yourself. I've been a Pitt fan for pretty long and I've suffered through the 50's and 60's. Take it somewhere else, Paco.

And it's not good if it's someone else's money. We pay the money with the cost of the tickets that are so outlandishly priced. Paying into these NIL funds is not a good thing for college sports. Pay the players from other sources of funds that colleges have, and there are many.

Besides, I'm on a fixed income and I don't have the money to waste on paying into NIL funds. Other priorities, Paco. I know you may not understand that, but when people are my age, funds are limited and earmarked to important things...like bills, my health, vacations with my wife, my hobbies. Pitt sports isn't a priority now.

It's about time someone else starts paying for the wins I sometimes celebrate.

Very disappointed that you lack any kind of empathy for someone else's opinion and circumstances. I used to respect your posts and stands on issues.

No, I don't respect people that boast and seeking attention about their unwillingness to support the topic of the message board they post on. That was your decision to post and draw attention to yourself. You didn't qualify it. You just boasted about how you refuse to support it because "some people's priorities are so messed up" so "No more". As if some magical rubicon was finally crossed with no mention of your "situation" or your "other priorities." So no, you don't get to retcon your post, and why would I respect you running to a Pitt football message board boasting about how it is now "no more" for you? Good for you. I'm glad you feel the need to torch the program and those that still care enough to support it on your way out. Door...ass.

I agree with you. This person is a dedicated Pitt person, but he/she blocks people at the hint of an insult. Your points are valid on this topic and you should feel free to speak your mind and even insults are valid sometimes.

I know your going to put me on ignore because you can't take a little bit of criticism.

Behind close doors or in the open is not the difference between mud and poop. The difference is the outrageous price that needs paid, and that everyone is a free agent EVERY YEAR!!! This nonsense is going to kill a lot of minor sports and I that alone makes the old way better. BTW I donated more years than not (as a non alum btw), but ill not give to 412 alliance.

Satisfaction of wins? I'm a Pitt fan, never get satisfaction being that. The 3 seasons since 1982 ( I was born in 79) that are worth anything, they still managed to leave a horrible taste in your mouth.

Got blown out by Utah for 04 season
Lost to Cincinnati in 09
Lost to W Michigan and lost a very winnable bowl game in 21

Yeah that ROI is great.

Honestly he told me he was putting me on ignore during the Wanny firing for a difference of opinion, I was respectful in the interaction too. I'm surprised I was off his ignore list. I'm assuming I'm heading back on the list. He has taken a nastier tone the last couple years.

I'm not sure what your definition of a " meaningful" game is? What I do know is that Pitt has played almost none that seem meaningful to CFB fans local or national according to the moribund nature of everything related to Pitt football, and those have seemed to me to be disproportionately negative in their outcome. Hey, everything might be fine and we've just had some bad luck over these past 80 years and making a change now will sideline Pitt football just when our luck is about to change. I understand that logic. I just don't buy into it any longer.

Thanks. I appreciate that you realize that this board is about opinions and I respect that. When posters resort to derogatory insults or act like Pitt is theirs and only theirs, while anyone who disagrees with them can let the door hit them in the ass, as Paco said, that poster loses all respect I may have ever had for them.

Pitt isn't his proprietary possession. We are all Pitt fans with different perspectives and frames of reference. If those are different than Paco's, I suggest he deal with it. But he can STFU with the vitriol and insults.

You have no control over what the best players possible are going to do, regardless of how much money you have. My take is to use the money from the ACC collapse (if there will be any) and try to build something positive in the variables where we DO have control and use the positive resources that we DO have to their most efficient advantage.

If we can win 10 games a year in my imaginary conference while playing in a cheap on campus stadium with a nice atmosphere, would that build a better fan base and brand than what the status quo has been producing? I think it would but I am only certain that the status quo is a known destination today and that destination to just stumble aimlessly in the same circle of disappointment is not one that inspires investment. Maybe this is why coaches, players and fans alike leave as soon as they can?

This is foolishness and immaturity. The Pitt football program is being torched quite well without my help. I never did that. In fact, I'm sure I've donated more to Pitt football over the years than many. For you to arrogantly come on here with your high and mighty attitude as you do quite often is amusing.

We all knew this would happen but .. Well welcome to the new world ... SMH ...
What happened to the “integrity” of the process? He’s not in the portal, so there can’t be an offer, right?
