Why No Offer to Nelly Cummings yet?

We've all experienced the heartache of Pitt basketball and the decline in quality that we all came to expect year in and year out. Recruiting is tough with all the Blue Bloods out there.

But when you have one of the best homegrown talents right here in the WPIAL and he hasn't yet received an offer from a roster dying for an infusion of excitement, you begin to wonder what the hell is going on?

I'm perplexed on why Lincoln Park's Nelly Cummings hasn't gotten the green light from Pitt?

Already one of the best players in Pennsylvania, now a junior, this is a kid you want on your roster. Indiana and Tom Crean has its eyes on him.

So far:

State Champion - Fresh
25 PPG - Soph
1st Team All State - Soph
National Champion - Soph
4 D1 Offers currently.

Pitt has offered 2 kids from the 2018 class with no resume.

What's the holdup?

It's not late. They need to get a good look at him and they are working to do that now which actually puts them ahead of the game. No one else has offered him either. And "being first" isn't really the most important criteria (although being too late surely can be). With that, we have been a little curiously late on some offers over the years. But at this point, I wouldn't include Cummings on that list.

Yea, no one offered McConnell either...

Kid is one of the best. Narduzzi has cornered the market in Western Pa. Jamie should take note.

He has taken note of Cummings for sure. However, do you really believe that "cornering the Western PA market" of basketball players is the same thing as it is for football? I surely don't.

I might also suggest that it a bit premature to proclaim that Narduzzi has "cornered the market for Western PA" just yet. Hopefully, commitments of Hamlin and Hudson will get us closer to that. Additionally, it's yet to be seen how good of a strategy this is.

I'm not sure I understand at all how McConnell is a parallel to this situation. Yes, you are correct that no one offered McConnell except Duquesne. And McConnell committed early because it was a clear situation that for his size, this was the best offer he would likely get.

Like I said, Pitt has taken note of Cummings. And they will offer when they know he's the right guy (and there's a good chance that he is.) But they are not late.

Finally, Pitt was early on the other guy from Midland, and actually took the commitment from Rowan before they wanted to. The problems this caused are pretty clear.

Perhaps you should watch him play. They've offered 2 other 2018 recruits that aren't close to being as good as Cummings. When you have a kid like this in your backyard, you lock him up.
Who are u referring to?

Renell Cummings from Lincoln Park.

I remember him getting quite a bit of hype prior to his freshman year. The tough part with a kid like him is that, at 6'0", he needs to be able to play PG at the high D-I level. I haven't seen him outside of highlight tapes to know if he can or can't.

He looks good athletically and in terms of his shooting, though. If he can run a capable PG game, he should be a definite offer.

I'm confused. Some people are saying we need to do better with 4/5 star recruits, others are saying we need to take flyers local kids with no offers. Someone please explain?

Once you understand that with some people no matter what we do short of winning a national championship we are wrong you'll get a better handle on this.

I think his first ones were St Francis PA and Bowling Green (or some other MAC team). Though, as drax stated, Indiana has been sniffing around.

Of course not.

Oh, I'm sorry. I don't spend my entire day on here like you geniuses. He's been offered by Cornell, Mount St Mary's, St Francis PA, and Bowling Green.

Tom Crean and Indiana have been pursuing as well.

Point is, smart asses, that this kid is already a great player entering his junior year. He's going to get even better. When you have a kid of this caliber in your backyard, you go after him before he really gets attention from the other schools. I'm told he wants to go to Pitt. But don't be mad when the other schools come knocking and he bolts for them cause Pitt was dragging its ass recruiting him.

Drax I don't understand your answers man.And you getting quite defensive. As stated did we get Rowan , and Heron. They were 5 star juniors who actually committed to Pitt and are not wearing panther jerseys. Not saying Cummings isn't good but you sound like your his agent more than a Pitt fan. And you saying that the last few years haven't been good. The last couple (2) maybe were not what we expected or were accustomed to (is that our fault as fans or Dixon's as coach ). But many other schools would love to be in Pitt's place as well as Dixon's as a coach the last 10-12 years. You are a " what have you done for me lately" type. And because the last year(or two) have been bad, you spout stuff like Pitt stinks, Dixon can't recruit, and other happy horse crap. You believe the program sucks and will fail because we didn't recruit one kid. Hey PSU has a top 20 class coming in next year, with local 4 & 5 stars. Go there because the last 10-12 years they sucked, but they got a great team ( in theory) next year based on their recruits.

Why would Pitt feel pressured.
Maybe he is the real deal, like you think.
Your angst is misplaced right now.

Maybe the past few years haven't been good, because we've been locking up low-rated local kids (Cam, Luther) and mid-rated local kids (Jeter, Young) plus pursuing Maverick Rowan and others...rather than building pipelines elsewhere.

Really? Truth hurt when I write it? I'm a realist. I have my own site. I cover all of these teams. I have been going to Pitt basketball and football games with my dad since I could walk. There is no one who defends Pitt like I have. But I want to see results. I saw the crap we had in the 90's after the Sean Miller, Charles Smith days.

Pitt has not been up to par lately. All of the transfers, the dropped commitments....its been a mess. I want this program to succeed. Success comes with having ball players you can win with. Cummings is one of those players.

You responded to you own post, quoting yourself.
Take a deep breath.
You're not going to drive traffic to your own site, being a goon.
Ask Dokish.
There are enough on the site. The point is, we're hyping up a kid who doesn't need it. Has to be a Top 100 bb player, straight A student, works on his game very hard. We would like to see him here at Pitt, but that might be wishful thinking. You folks can chill.

I certainly don't follow the recruiting "game" like some here do, but while he may end up a top 100 player he isn't in the Rivals top 150 at this point. Maybe that's where the disconnect is here. You obviously think he's much better than the scouting services (at least Rivals) and college coaches do. Otherwise he'd probably have at least one big time offer by now.

As a former Pitt coach once said, time will time.

He's probably a good player. He was hyped as a youngster. Phenom probably oversold him, but it wouldn't shock me if he's indeed worthy of a scholarship. He has a HUDL video out and he looks good in it, at his size though it really will be about his ability to play PG.
