I believe it was the Mississippi Fb coach who just the other day said that most of the recruits wanted to know one thing and that was just much in NIL money they were being offered to sign . If this is what it’s coming down too it would be far cheaper for Pitt to give JC some cash to spread around to get the players he needs to succeed. Force him to retool his staff and paying the kids won’t cost the 9+ million that it will take to buy him out !

I don’t believe that would be within the rules. I think someone else even said that making that promise technically isn’t allowed. But I’m all but certain giving it to JC to hand out is just not permissible.

I’m sure there’s lots of gray areas and a lot of lines will be tested. But Pitt doesn’t have the whales that a lot of programs do. There’s a discussion on the football board right now and I said over there how this is likely to make the competitive gap even bigger.

You have to understand that with the way that NIL is, the NCAA basically punted on the issue and allowed each state government to make their own rules. It's a nonsensical system, but it's the one that the NCAA chose.

The thing that you're describing might very well be totally above board in Mississippi, but as far as I know, I don't believe it would be allowed in Pennsylvania.

I do believe that NIL presents a wealth of advantages to a major-conference college basketball program located in a major city like Pittsburgh, especially one that doesn't have an NBA team. I think the possibilities for NIL are even greater for Pitt basketball than they are for Pitt football (transcendent players like Pickett aside). In fact, I've advocated in the past for there to be an off-court staff position that specializes in player *business* development as much as it does in player academic/life development. The guy who's in the role who fits that the most is Gilbert Brown. Gilbert Brown's a great Pitt man and a valuable person to have in the program for player/alumni relations, but he's also someone who hasn't lived in Pittsburgh since he was in college, isn't from Pittsburgh, and isn't as enmeshed in the current Pittsburgh business landscape to the level that might be able to unlock some of those opportunities.

I have no idea what’s technically permissible, but unlike Fb you don’t need that many players to be successful which means far less money is needed .

If they can find someone willing or a group willing to fund the buyout it would be far cheaper to fund a booster group for NIL distributions.

And basketball you only need TO BUY 3 or 4 very good players to get good. Have the biggest donors sponsor them DIRECTLY instead of donating to the Athletic Department. Who cares if it's legal, maybe it's like the "Kenny Slide" they can make a rule against it AFTER we have a good season, :)

TEST IT? Never care about BS like "the spirit of the rules" LOL that's for LOSERS :)

The truth is, with NIL, groups like The Golden Panthers are legal now, just have to figure out what form it takes to twist and skirt the rules to maximum effect.

TD on the other board posted an article about booster-funded collectives to pay players. 17 schools have them. The Golden Panthers better get something going quick or we're going to get left further behind.

Those old enough to remember the best period of athletic excellence in Bb and Fb was when the Golden Panthers were in full bloom . In Fb it’s not even close the greats that came through here from TD to Marino and Green and the national championship in 76 . None of JDs team had close to the talent that Evans had with Smith , Lane, Gore , Shorter etc they just had a bad coach . Someone down there has to be smart enough to figure this out !

There’s a lot of Innuendo just how Duke secures all their talent and who was one of their main recruiters during his stay there . It looks like Pitt already has a HC who knows how this works , let him do his thing and bring in 3 or 4 players @ 100k / a piece …. Like I said it sure beats paying out 9 million .

But the woke administration is ashamed to be good at any sport other than maybe WOMEN'S volleyball, LOL :)

How many times are we going to go back to the PGT Trucking guy and the bowser family ? Due to our years of nerdy neglect our donor base is pathetic

If the first question a kid asks in recruiting is about NIL, that’s probably not a kid worth recruiting.

This isn’t SEC football. Pittsburgh is a pro sports town and Pitt will likely never have the community backing to play the NIL game with the big boys. Recruit kids who are hungry to develop and play at this level and let the NIL stuff take care of itself.

I posted this on the football site just a few moments ago. But was listening to Mark Packer yesterday...

I am not sure who the Congressman was, but one called up his show (this was on XM ESPN U, not ACCN) and was discussing this whole NIL, recruiting and transfer stuff. He said "we" (congress) has been on Mark Emmert and the NCAA to "get in front of this" or it is going to become the Wild Wild West and we are are going to have to get involved eventually.

And he ripped Emmert and the NCAA. Great line by the Congressman, "Mark Emmert seems to be nowhere to be found except when it is time to sign a new contract". They have been saying that they are are going to have to figure out how to pay these guys and do it in an organized fashion that maintains some semblance of competitive balance. And again, the NCAA preferred to just bury their heads and didn't seem interested in coming up with some semblance of an organized solution. Now, because of different laws, you have state to state variations on what some of these benefits are too the players, and some schools in certain states will have unfair advantages. And as this gets sorted out, if it gets out of control, congress will have no choice but to step in and possibly remove the non profit status of these schools and make these kids employees with all that comes with it and they don't want to do this.

That college football now is a highspeed train away from become "NFL Lite" as Packer called it, with maybe 40-50 teams having 100 scholarships. And they were also focusing on the fact that yes, they had no illusions on education over football, but the fact is 2% of these guys make the NFL and 2000 of them right now are in the Transfer Portal. Does education even matter at all? Why are all of these kids transferring? Because they can?

The education part of this is really irrelevant, unfortunately it’s not about educating anyone it’s about winning . A great majority of these kids wouldn’t be choosing a college education without their athletic skills . It’s nice to listen to college coaches stress education, but don’t kid yourself if the kid is a 4.0 student who can’t compete in their sport they want them gone so they can get the scholarship back . The whole thing is a mess .
