Will there be a public apology from pgh media and over reacting ‘fans’ on

Of course not. Even today after Goodman's tweet about Schmidt staying with St Bon, Pompeani tweets out that Pitt turned down again or something along those lines.

As for Schmidt, I have no inside info, but I am almost certain his name was leaked on his side as a potential candidate to get himself a raise. he was never seriously considered by Pitt in my opinion. He couldn't have been.

I'm sure Madden will be first up?
I'd expect alot of damning with faint praise as usual.

I apologize for posting the Jon Scheyer rumor and saying that wouldn’t be a good hire.

I apologize for believing and stating that the search seemed ill guided.

I also apologize for stating the perception of the search was negative.

Having said all that, this is what fans do. I didn’t insult Heather or comment on the fact she was a woman (that is ridiculous).

No one should have to apologize for stating their opinions. Some of them were way over the top, sure. Some of them were also rooted in logic and reading the landscape.

The bashing - complete nonsensical bashing - of the admin and the ad is uncalled for and I doubt you'll get an apology from those people

Few were rooted in logic and it was clear who was making up landscapes that they knew absolutely nothing about.

I think the search was still bungled and that is why we ended up with a coach who wouldn't have been close to my top 5 options.

We hired an assistant, who had the OU program fall apart under him. He has some upside because of his ability to recruit, but he isn't anything close to a slam dunk.

What are people supposed to apologize for?

Paco, I don't think it's illogical to take a nationally respected writer who has had scoops before, quoting sources and what not - espec w/r/t Scheyer. Add that to what Chris and Matt reported on this board on the same subject and his supposed real candidacy. Now, it turned out to not come to fruition, but yes, absolutely...a lot of it was rooted in logical conclusions.

When you do a coaching search like this, you talk to a lot of people and put out a lot of feelers but you also have a lot of people and agents throwing their names out there to taking advantage of the situation, a lot of boosters trying to show off that they're connected, and a lot of click batters that are obviously in a race to be the first with whatever load of the day was thrown against the wall (I mean people like Vuk, but even those in the national media are guilty). That doesn't mean every one of the names, contacts, or even interviewees, legit or not, is going to end up being a primary target, or even a target at all. One thing that was consistent through the whole search was Pitt was playing things very, very close to the vest. That is done for very good reasons, because no one will talk to you otherwise. People should know better about social media by now and they probably need to contemplate the sheer panic, rashness, and continually absurd assumptions that were being based on nothing but twitter rumors and click bait blogs. Get a sense for how these things play out elsewhere. There was zero abnormal about how Pitt conducted this coaching search. It's a process, and it has to play out, and the least important people to update about it are fans. And this search was finished exactly when you want it to be and when it would be expected to be: after most teams' seasons are finished, because the actual coach doesn't want to seriously discuss it while still in season, but prior to the Final 4, because that is almost like a coaching convention and helpful to have someone in place by then in order to build a staff.

And no, I don't think this is a slam dunk hire, but I don't think Pitt was a realistic candidate to even get a slam dunk, at least as defined by most on this board, unless you consider Hurley to be one. But this is a very, very good hire considering the smoldering ruble of our current program, with a lot of upside, strong recruiting track record and connections, P5 head coaching experience, tutelage under the John Wooden of our day, and great familiarity with the ACC and the Mid-atlantic.

Being wrong, spewing venom at every opportunity, making up facts and just having a massive over reactions to very thin or any real info.

Go ahead you can admit you were wrong, not in you DNA. Now you will call me a name and make up some absurd excuse for your position that was complete off base base.

Incorrect. No venom. He failed at OU. There were much better options IMO and the search was clearly not Hurley and then Capel, but misses in between.

I admit when I am wrong, but this search was not handled well and the result is certainly less than ideal to me. You can disagree. There is certainly some upside, but isn't remotely close to a home run hire. There was absolutely no upside with Schmidt and the fact he was even contacted is frightening.

Pessimists will always find something to be negative about. Some jump at every opportunity. It's part of their outlook, and difficult to control. It is their opinion, and they have a right to it, but, if their outlook was a positive one, they wouldn't have that opinion. It doesn't matter now, it is time for all the pessimists and optimists to join in and support the program. Heather came through, now we have to do our part.

Come on ripper. You are reaching. He didn't fail at Okla, he got to the Elite 8. He may not have had complete control of his ass'ts, but he was never personally inplicated, from what I had read. And, even if he did f up, he deserves a second chance. He was successful at Xavier before that, and his recruiting at Duke was outstanding. He may not be able to recruit here like Duke, but he surely can give this program a lift and make a run at some top guys. HL did not bungle this search. She kept it quiet, and finished with a flair. It was the fanbase that overreacted to all info, despite knowing nothing. Now, we need this fanbase to come together and give this man a chance. Show some heart, if you're a Pitt fan, you will join in with the parade to a new beginning.

First one doesn't deserve an apology. I don't know if the second and third deserve an apology, exactly, but they are absolutely absurd. A coaching search is judged 100% on the outcome- not message board notions of "ill guided" and not on perception of people who are totally uninformed. A CF search that ends up with a good hire is a good search. I smoothly executed search that produces Kevin Stallings is a disaster. The sole criterion for evaluating a coaching search is the person hired. Nothing else matters.

Heather used the media brilliantly. Whoever leaked the info it was Sheyer she was visiting had all twitter repeating it. Hurley may have used us but Heather used some folks as well.

The bottom line is how do you feel after this hire compared to how you felt after the Stallings hire?

Nothing is a guarantee but I damn sure feel a lot more optimistic now that two years ago.

Fans overreact. It's what they do. Happens everywhere, not just here. Media, on the other hand, isn't supposed to be that way. They tend to irresponsibly report things off of rumors and come up with negative stories just to get attention. And when they are proven wrong, they pretend like nothing ever happened.

Noone needs to apologize for anything.

For starters apologies aren't worth the bandwidth or keystrokes needed to produce them.

People say what they say, mean it at the time given the facts in hand, which doesn't mean they can't change their mind as conditions change.

At this time, today, this is a big move forward for PITT basketball.

A week or two ago if you performed a reality check ( Matta? , Miller?, Schmidt?, Hurley ( no chance), Oaks (not interested), etc things weren't looking like they were on the right track.

Today with the Capel hire the future of PITT basketball has some upside!

As I said in a prior post regarding Lyke's performance, style points don't count, results do, and this is an excellent start to a really good future result!

Now its on to recruiting/ winning which is the next milestone and check point!

Heather is a cool customer and played a bad hand very well.

she has more balls than most men.

I agree. The Schmidt stuff is way over the top. I don't even know if he was interviewed, although some believe he was. But he's about 5 or 6 levels below Capel as a coach. And there's no doubt Schmidt's agent threw his name out there as a potential candidate for the Pitt job, while he was probably not even seriously considered and was dismissed quickly.

He did fail at OU. The program was in worse shape when he left than when he took over and he was fired. That doesn't mean he can't be a good HC for Pitt. I think he has a chance, but he will need a very good staff.

I don't think this is a bad hire, but I do think the search was messed up and we flailed trying to make the hire with several higher ranking (my opinion and HL's I believe) options. The fact Pitt/HL even entertained options like Schmidt or Cluess is very disconcerting. I would have preferred Oats and obviously HL did too, as they tried to offer him a couple times.

I am definitely going to support and hope for the best. Capel gives us a shot. Schmidt would not have and would have been the end of the road for me and many. I think HL saw the reaction and went another way in the end and that is a good thing. That is the very, very positive thing out of all of this. When Pitt saw the reactions to guys like Schmidt they didn't just push things through.

What??? This makes no sense. If your wife is a little late coming home, do you over react and jump to an immediate negative conclusion and believe and accuse her of having an affair...because you care?
Damn man, are you really analyzing this comment?

Nobody on this board knows who was seriously considered, contacted or targeted, other than Hurley. Lyke was quiet and went about her business...the way it's supposed to be done.

Barnes will go down as another killer B in Pitt athletic history.
