We proved today that we can put the pressure on the QB and now the pressure clearly falls on the back of the AD and the Pitt ticket office this week to get fans into the building for the UVA game. I proved to you guys that Stub Hub is where fans purchase tickets when I told you the NY Jets dump their excess tickets on Stub Hub at market value at a VERY successful rate. Pitt has yet to try this very successful process in which the Jets have proven works week after week to a 98 capacity or better rate of attendance coming off a 4-12. Win and they're come is nonsense because they keep coming and the Jets have never won. Though attendance has no barring on free agents with the Jets (we got Revis), it certainly makes all the difference in the world to Pitt as a five star TE will be in attendance along with many other top recruits for the UVA game.

Pitt needs to dump 10,000 tickets on stub hub as nobody in today's world buys through the ticket office so what do we have to lose by dumping the upper end zone seats on the site and if they don't get sold for $2 to $5 a piece or market value than it was worth the try. If it works, you can thank me and build on it. Anyone who doesn't want to try this is clearly in denial when it comes to Heinz Field's failure because it's not like playing on campus.

I'm obviously in favor of an on campus building because nobody is successful off campus however if we are going to play at the Steelers stadium changes must be made as players win in college football.. Without multiple 4 or 5 star players like Price, Grisby and Boyd in each recruiting class, you can't compete for championships in college football. We average 2 four star or five star players per class. We need 8 to 10 per class.

H2P!

Joe,

You're clearly in living in the ice age. You are also clearly in denial and feel today's consumer actually goes to the ticket office vs buying on stub hub. Thankfully, you aren't running my business because I would be out of the business.

So the person who doesn't understand that the same tickets get posted on more than one ticket site and who also thinks that if there aren't any tickets left for sale an hour before the game on the reseller sites that means that all the tickets were sold on the reseller site thinks someone else lives in the "ice age"? Well, I guess better the "ice age" than the Age of Ignorance.

Using StubHub strategically can certainly be a part of the Ticket Office's tool bag for selling tickets. That said, your proposal will not likely work. First, the NFL and college football are entirely different products. Second, New York City is an entirely different market than Pittsburgh.

My view is for Pitt, basic attendance is determined by season tickets sales. Accordingly, the lot as been cast on that already. Give Barnes and company a chance for a full season before judging him. Assuming the weather is not bad, Pitt will draw a nice crowd for homecoming...they always do. I just do not see Pittsburgh as a last minute market that you are going to get a significant number of people out for a game at this stage for Panther football. Should Pitt continue to win...there could be a chance for future home games [but week day games are never going to sell well for the Panthers]. Relax, I think we now have leadership in place that understands college sports and the business side of things...I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for a couple more seasons. Hail to Pitt!

Like I've said before..pitt could dump.5k. On.stubhub. For a penny each...and you won't notice any change in attendance.
The cost of the tickets isn't keeping crowds away.

The reason all of those tickets disappear an hour before the game is that is stubhubs policy. They don't want people buying tickets and getting screwed over

Why is it that we always have had 30K diehard fans? Aren't we graduating fans every year? Need to make the current students diehards. You know. After graduating and leaving the area they actually come back.

I would say look at the student section with 5 minutes to go to determine the future diehards for pitt. Factor in not all of those kids will find jobs in Pittsburgh and that explains quite a bit

There arent an extra 10,000 people in Western PA who would attend Pitt UVa if it was free. That's the sad truth. This is the greatest pro sports town, maybe in the world. They just dont care about college sports, especially not a mediocre team like Pitt. Pitt has 30K diehards and maybe you get an extra 10K to show up if the weathet is nice plus maybe 3000 students for 3 quarters.

Pittsburgh is highly overrated as a great pro sports town. Pittsburgh is a great pro sports town when the home team is winning--period. Put a bad product out there, or lose some games, and the boo-birds appear immediately and people either no-show or do not buy tickets. If the Steelers lose a few more, be sure, there will be plenty of seats available at Heinz Field. Hail to Pitt!

I disagree. Pittsburghers travel or show up at away games in record numbers.. We all know about Steeler nation taking over nfl stadiums across the country, there are documentaries on this. But look at what Pirate fans are doing at MLB ballparks.. Pens fans aren't too far behind. I lived in DC and Pens fans would make up well over 25% of Verizon, even when the Caps had ovy and were playing well. Bucco fans are over 2.4 million this year, more than a lot of major market teams..

When the team is losing, fans boo or don't show up.. That is such a silly argument. No fan base in the world supports a losing product, Pittsburgh isn't alone in this.. Look at some of the losing teams in the nfl, these games are blacked out in local markets.. Again, no fan base supports a losing team..

You can disagree all you want, but your examples are all of fans following the team and showing up when they are winning. There may also be another factor, which is that jobs in Western Pennsylvania have been scarce for a couple of decades...so there are tons of displaced Western Pennsylvanians all around the country that love to see the home town team when they show up. To be a great pro sports city/town, you need to come out and support the home team, win, lose or draw and in rain, sleet or snow. Throw in the fact that Pittsburgh could not and cannot support an NBA franchise, and yeah, I believe the city is a wee bit overrated in being such a great pro sports place. There are plenty of fan bases that support losers...just look at Chicago with the Bears, White Sox and Cubs. Hail to Pitt!

Metro Chicago area has over 10 million, Pittsburgh metro is what? 2 million, tops.. Professional venues are taken over when a Pittsburgh team plays there, pure and simple. The bengals had to implement a plan to slow down steeler fans at their home games.. Call it travel, call it displaced fans, doesn't matter.

Hey, if it makes you feel better about yourself--have at it. Will you at least concede some of the oldest sports attire worn by any city's fans in the world? I regularly see 70's vintage clothing being worn at Pitt, Pirates and Steelers games--and it is not because the fans are trying to be cool and wear throw back/vintage stuff--it is because that is what makes up their wardrobe. LOL Hail to Pitt!

PL, not sure what you are saying? Old vintage 70's pirates gear? I see a ton, and I mean a TON of pirates gear around city.. Is it old, not sure, a couple different logos. I have a gold tee shirt with the old pirate logo (see logo below), guess that is what you are referring too. What is old steelers vintage? The uniform has been the same since the 70's.. I have a dan marino script jersey I wear, it makes up my wardrobe..I don't feel cool wearing it though, i'll be honest.. Wearing jerseys, if you are above the age of 14, no matter what the sport, is kind of weird to me, outside of the sporting events (a small but distinguishable exception). But that's just my personal opinion and I am in no position to judge others on wardrobe selections. Not really high or low on pittsburgh liking their professional teams, Doesn't make me feel better or worse.. I am not one of those fans that goes to these away games, I like my HDTV..

Not really understanding your opinion. You say pittsburgh is a fickle fan base, don't support the teams when they lose, then you take shots at them for holding dear past generations of players (by holding onto their outdated gear). So which one is it? You look down at Pittsburgh and enjoy your insults on yinzers. I'll assume you were at least at one time, from Pittsburgh, so you are allowed.

Yea. Very few Pitt students are true "diehard Pitt fans." Maybe just a couple hundred,if that many. The number of students left at the end of the game gives you an idea. We definitely aren't converting students to regular fans once they graduate. Its worse in bball as students saw Top 5 teams in their years and now we are begging people to buy tickets.

Gee.....I guess those empty seats at the Arena & PNC when the home team truly sucked were just my imagination?? And the Bucs averaged less than 31K/game.....about 75% capacity, and it tool 16 seasons to get there??? Ban fireworks and it'd be more like 25K
I was in Pitt Stadium for the O.J. Simpson Bowl. 3/4 of the sparse crowd were from Philly.....all there to boo Joe Kuharich. Pgh fans in foreign venues just miss the folks back home.

I did not say the Pittsburgh fan base was fickle. Nor did I say it was not a good fan base. I just said that I think the city is overrated as being some super professional sports mecca. As for the clothing comment, I'm not saying it is vintage gear...I'm saying it is very old clothes. Seriously, what I see people wearing to Pittsburgh sporting events the Salvation Army would be embarrassed to attempt to sell.

Despite your protests otherwise, Pittsburgh professional sports fans are much like their kin folk around the country. Win, and they show up. Lose, and they do not. It just seems like Pittsburgh fans are better because the Steelers have had such a record of winning over the past couple of decades. By the way, I did not say that Pittsburgh pro sports fans are fickle, nor did I say they were not good fans. Merely, the reputation of Pittsburgh being some extraordinary sports mecca is mostly urban legend.

As for the clothing remark, it was meant to amuse. That said, I regularly see 20-30 year old garments on many in Pittsburgh attending sporting events. LOL...the Salvation Army would be embarrassed to sell such stuff. Seriously, should anyone be wearing a "One for the Thumb" t-shirt to anything other than using it to polish your car? While Bob Prince and Myron Cope were sports icons in Pittsburgh...people really should not be wearing clothing from those respective eras to a sporting event. And yeah, I grew up in Western Pennsylvania and called Pittsburgh home for nearly 10 years...that does not mean I am blind or that I cannot share an honest observation and opinion. Hail to Pitt!

don't think any city is some super professional sports mecca, if anyone thinks Pittsburgh is that, well then I agree with you.. I have not seen one for the thumb but if I did, it would be fantastic.. Pittsburgh is like every other fan base, they wont support a terrible product.. I am just fascinated in how well pittsburgh travels, that's all I do not get any sort of pride or honor out of it, since I really never am in that group.. Im ok with someone wearing an old steeler jersey to a game, even if it is a Ham/Lambert/Bradshaw type jersey.. You either got to go way back or go new though, the middle of the road jerseys are funny. Ham/Bradshaw/Blount then you are good, but it's the 15 year old jerseys that crack me up. Some dude wearing a Yancey Thigpen jersey is funny. COme on dude, you are wearing that for no other reason because you are too cheap to get a new one. Vintage 70s is fine, wearing a Thomas Everett # 27 is not.. I add a Mike Vrabel jersey, and retired it. Actually i got drunk and lost it but same outcome..

Hey, On this topic of vintage/old steeler gear, I challenge you to find a kid who grew up in Pittsburgh in the 70's or 80's that did NOT own this cap at one point in their life...
