the entire recruiting world has him locked to MSU.

Still time for an emergency re-convening of the Golden Panthers and a clandestine delivery of a thick envelope to the U of D Jesuit gym before Winston puts on the green hat. Anyone, Anyone?

I don't believe there's an envelope large enough.....

I understand Bruce Pearl uses wire transfers to the Caymans.

the badby2 ...... thanks for the updates.

I realize the kid is going to MSU barring a true miracle and I've been pretty down on our basketball recruiting recently, but I'm encouraged by the fact that Smoke got us in the top two for Winston ..... many have said and of course it is true that coming in 2nd doesn't get it done ..... but IMO getting in the top two for a talent like Winston gives me hope that Smoke can get us some pretty good commits from that area in the future.... we'll see.

Don't get too encouraged--Smoke is very close to this kid and his dad. Winston has called Smoke an "uncle" that he grew up with. Pitt is in the final mix purely because of the strength of that relationship. Unless Smoke has some other "nephews" out there who are national top 50 players, there's not much to read into coming in 2nd for this particular player.

At the same time, I don't think Smoke's failure to land Winston is any kind of indictment of him as a recruiter either. This thing was virtually a done deal before we ever even hired him. We are very late to the Winston party, Izzo has been courting him for years. One thing that I've heard/read is that Smoke has worked really hard on Winston;s recruitment, so it won;t be for his lack of effort or influence.

It will be interesting to see what kind of college player he is. I've watched him in person a couple of times--he will not wow you with anything spectacular, and he does not have elite size, strength, quickness or athleticism. he gets his points in HS, but I don;t see him as much of a scorer at the college level. Yet coaches, and Izzo especially, truly believe he's the missing piece to go with their thoroughbreds. He is a very heady, very smart player, rock solid with the ball and a tremendous passer. A born winner for sure.

That description sounds more than a little bit like James Robinson.

Harve, are you trying to say Winston is overrated?
No, not at all.I think Winston is rated where he should be. Just that a lot of people don't necessarily understand what a PG does for a team. Every good PG is not a big scorer or a shooter.

A PG's first and main job is to run the offense and distribute.

Obviously JR is not that special player at the PG spot that Izzo and other coaches believe Winston to be. Whether he is or not is TBD, but something tells me he'll be a name well known to hoops fans across the country in a couple of years. And yes, he will have a LOT more talent around him, a better team, a better coach, a lot more attention--that doesn't hurt.

While a PG's traditional primary responsibility is to distribute and run the offense, a really good PG gives his team what it needs when it needs it--at times that might be scoring, dribble penetration, three point shooting. Our guy is of little impact in that way. He is not a player the other team has to account for when Pitt is at the offensive end.

I would argue that the most important quality of a good PG is to make those around him better. If JR has done that, it hasn't been apparent to me, and our team's results have not shown it.

Winston to MSU as expected.
Yep--and when Miles Bridge follows his buddy Winston and commits to MSU ina couple of weeks, that will be the best recruiting class in the country, UK included, and Izzo's best ever. They will be LOADED.

Did you happen to turn off the TV every time Robinson sat this past year? We were way worse without him and it should've been obvious even if you don't know much about basketball.

That;s because he was the ONLY ballhandler/PG on the whole damned team. There was nobody to sub for him but Newkirk, who was terrible. With James out, we were playing without any PG. James can run the offense from a team perspective, no question. In fact, that's about all he does, and he;s the only one on the team who can do it. It's a critical job and he does it to average standards. We were way worse off when Young was out of the game too. But that's not what I'm talking about when I reference making the players around him better.

I consider Robinson the type of player who can excel at running a team with players talented enough to do all the basic things like rebounding and shooting that need to be done on the floor. He can be the glue that holds a team like that together. He tends to look bad when out there with guys that don't do things particularly well like what we saw too many times last year. He doesn't have the scoring and defensive skills to make up for what is lacking from others.

The team was also much better with Robinson in when he was playing alongside Woodall and Patterson, both more than capable ball handlers. It was more obvious last year because of what you said. I would argue that a high ratio of assists to turnovers makes the entire team better a significant amount, especially when you rank 6th in the nation at it. Although I'm sure I'll hear rationalizations for why that's actually not that good.
