**I’ve been writing postgame “dribbles” for over 25 years, but this is a first.

**That is…I’ve never had to dictate postgame thoughts to a willing passenger (willing is a stretch) during our trek home.

**Thankfully, my William & Mary sophomore is up to the task, although they’ve pledged to insert a few of their own words along the way (Yep, in parentheses).

**I should say we’ve had a nice trip. In our drive to White Sulphur Springs we encountered wonderful weather and enjoyed splendid conversation in anticipation of our epic battle with the Badgers.

**Unfortunately the trip home is understandably disappointing. But that doesn’t mean we weren’t very proud of our Panthers.

**In short, on this day Tonje proved to be an unstoppable force within a battle of two pretty darn good teams.

**Throughout our first six wins, I’ve suggested the Panthers are still not quite the team I think they should be, but I think it should be thought of as good news that I still have that same thought tonight.

**The easiest explanation of course is that hopefully we’ll get more than two minutes out of Damian Dunn in future games. In fact it is reasonable to assert that regular minutes from Damian tonight may have been enough to make up the minutes (we needed his defense).

**Offensively, we still know that better days are ahead for Jaland. He’s still forcing it a bit more than he should instead of letting most things come to him. But this will get better.

**We also got to witness a mini coming-out party of Amsal Delalić (and Beebah I think to some degree), and tonight we finally got a better look at that player we hope he can be.

**But offense notwithstanding, what Capel and crew must examine is why we were nearly powerless to stop Wisconsin in the second half. There aren’t many games you’re going to win when your opponent scores 54 points in the latter 20.

**Foul trouble was part of the issue, but I have to wonder if a tinker to the zone a little earlier should have been in order.

**But all of that amounts to typical fan second-guessing. Tonight we were a good team who lost to a team who is just a little better at the moment (and has a future draft pick).

**Additionally, it’s not hard to see how this year’s team is strides ahead of last years at the same stretch. Hopefully we can still improve as they did, though.

**On a completely different note, I’m not sure I’ve ever attended a college basketball game with the announcer calling out the number of seconds remaining on a shot clock. That said, the experience watching the game at the Greenbrier was certainly one that was worth a special trip – despite their issues with technology and lighting.

**I was proud to be there and see a few old friends among the Pitt fans at the event, however, I must give the highest props to the Wisconsin faithful who showed out. They topped us 3 to 1 both in number and volume (not that we didn’t try to be loud, at least I did. I don’t know about my dad).

**I hope the Panthers will hold their heads high through the holiday on their way to Columbus. I can’t say I’d be predicting a win, but I’m confident we will at least enjoy another great contest like tonight.

Great read as always. That's awesome you went with your son. Pitt will definitely battle. I'm hoping to get a split in the next 2 games.

Agree on the zone. This team needs to play more zone at least until we get Dunn back. We went one for two and last to a pretty good team without one of our better players and probably our strongest on ball defender. So not a whole lot to be discouraged about.

There's a number of things I would point directly to as to why we lost this game without blaming the loss on losing Dunn.

1) We got a C game at best from Lowe. He is one of if not the team leader, we need an A game in a game like this. 4 turnovers and poor shooting and shot selection is on him.

2) Corhen was great scoring the ball and finishing with 16 points. 2 rebounds from Corhen is not going to cut it. That is Fede level poor and not top 150 in the country worthy.

3) Depth is weak on defense and on the glass. Beebah getting 3 rebounds was a bright spot.

4) Guillermo was one of the big reasons we helped build the lead in the first place. But we have to get better 3 point shooting from him as his slump from 3 continues. And its now a slump

5) I made it a point of emphasis pregame that we win the rebound margin and turnover margin. We lost both as a team.

If there is a bright spot, its Delalic efficiency metrics after his 4th game. His season numbers now are looking good. Time to play him and find out what he really brings to the table.

Dave. We are good. I will say this is the best Pitt team since 2008-09. Yes I know 2010-11 we were a one seed, but I thought that team was a bit lucky. So...................can't wait for the next game. That is the fun of this. I can't wait for the next game.

While I share your optimism... The 2011 team is still a mountain, a large one, for this current team to climb. I thought we would be better through 7 games this year but the Delalic injury and now Dunn injury set things back. The 2011 team did multiple things really well. Elite ball control, elite assist to turnover ratio, dominant on the glass. The 2011 team punished teams from mistakes and punished teams in the transition game and destroyed teams trying to zone them. The backcourt of Lowe / Leggett is great. It isnt elite level like Wanamaker / Gibbs until the overall decision making becomes better from Leggett / Lowe. And the major issue is Lowe. Great talent, not experienced enough just yet.

Rust is coming off the injury

Now watch Wanamaker in transition to bury teams

Potential is there for good things...

Nooooo. I think the 2010-11 team was better than the 08-09 team. The 2011 team was talented, versatile, and deep. They could beat you in so many ways. Of all the Pitt teams built to make a Final Four run & have a chance of doing something once they got there, that was the one.

This team isn't doesn't have that kind of potential. That's not a knock on this team at all.

The 2008 team is still the biggest what if. That team lost Cook to a torn ACL. We were 11-0 and just beat Duke when Cook went down. We lost Fields the next game for a huge chunk of the season to a broken foot. Fields came back and we still beat 3 top 25 teams in a row to win the Big East Tournament Championship and get a 4 seed.

Im not a fan of what ifs but. We lost zero games at full strength in 2008. Let me repeat, we lost Zero games in 2008 at full strength.

I also think the 2004 team is incredibly underrated.

DT, I said the same thing (in my in-game comments) about us going to a zone right after halftime. We really lack a rim protector and it showed. Yes, Wisky shot the 3-ball better in the second half, but it seems that every team that played their second half at that end of the court had better shooting stats, as well as more points there. All of the teams that won their games finished at that end of the court. I don't know if the lighting was better there or what, but it seems odd that one end of the court was more favorable

Dunn certainly would wish for a do-over in White Sulfur Springs. Fouled out of the first game and got injured in the second. I'm guessing he'd not want to go back there ever again (!)

I'm not one to compare current teams to past ones. This group has its own personality. Time will tell how well they'll compare (record-wise), but I'm hoping they recover from this and figure out the parts that play best together. But unless we figure out how to better defend the rim and contain rebounds more consistently, this team will struggle with teams such as Wisconsin. Maybe there aren't that many who have that type of team but the Badgers looked the better team last night

Thanks for attending the game with your son. You're a great fan and ambassador for Pitt BB

Pitt basketball in 2006.

+18 on the glass against the #2 team in the country. And we blew their doors off. Rebound the ball..

That 2008-09 team really wasn't built for March. Every game in the NCAAT was a struggle. UNC was head and shoulders better than everyone else that year. They trounced Nova & MSU in the Final Four.

We really might need to go 15-5 in the league to get a bid. Unfair really, but the ACC as a whole has nothing to show for this OOC schedule.

Cannot stress how much we need 1/2 coming up. I’d feel better if we can squeak 2 out, but missing our best defender and most efficient offensive player is a crucial loss. Our warts showed last night in the second half. Rebounding and rim protection are still an issue. Lowe has not played well this season. Need better shot selection and decision making from him. But good news it he’ll be back next year unless he improves considerably

wisc scored 54 because they like to play fast and executed. Pitt had GDG go 1/6 from 3, Ish go 0/4, and Lowe 1/7 from 3. One of those three needed to step up. Maybe it was lighting. Maybe it was an off night. Amsal needs to show he can create space to shoot and he will be a weapon, but he had one of the most normal looking 3s in that ballroom this weekend. And WISC beat Arizona by 15. Duke beat them by 14. Pitt had a shot…. Years ahead of years ago.

Yep. 15-5 could very well be required if we dont win 1 of the next 2. And if we go 0-3 vs Duke/UNC, we arent going 15-2 vs the rest of the league. As I said a few days ago, if we go 0-3 in this stretch, we will not make the NCAA Tournament.

They also scored 54 because they shot 60% in the second half.

They scored 68 in the final 26 minutes. Made Tonje look like LeBron. Couldn't keep him out of the lane. No rim protection. Couldn't rebound. Just a horrible final 26 minutes. Up 14 with 26 minutes left needs to be a win.

Two shots that really stuck out later in the second were the pair of 3’s made by McGee, I think he was open for both in roughly the same spot in the corner. Neither team shot well from 3 but theirs came at the right time.

Jorge is unplayable at this point. I don't think he should ever see the court in a close game.

Dude, they only made it halfway through the bracket. They lost to a team that got trounced in the Final Four.

Great team. It wasn't a great team built to plow through March. The results back that up.

You dont use 1 game to determine how good a team is.

Kansas in 2010 was 33-2 going into the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament. They were the overall number 1 seed and beat 9 ranked teams going into that game along with both a big 12 and big 12 tournament championship and they lost to Northern Iowa by 2 points. Had that game been played 100 times, Kansas probably loses 1 out of 100.

Pitt lost to Villanova in the Elite 8 because of 1 play. Dixon turning the ball over late then giving the opposing team a 3 point play. We had a 4 point lead with the ball under 3 minutes to play. That 1 bonehead play is close to the same level of bonehead as when Nasir Robinson fouling to lose the game in 2011 against Butler. You could also blame the loss on Brown missing 1 free throw to win the game. Butler then cruised to the NCAA Finals.

I think just how good the two freshmen are will ultimately determine how good Pitt will be .

For right now, this is the single biggest weakness 7 games to date

3 point shooting

Lowe-29%
Guillermo- 26%
Cummings- 25%

3 point shooting was supposed to be a strength. Capel hyped our shooting all offseason. As a team we are shooting under 34% from 3 which stinks.

This is the one area we could get a huge lift from the Bosnian Bomber because we sure as hell need it with half our rotation in 3 point shooting slumps. We also desperately need Cummings to get going from 3. His looks a lot of the time have been wide open. He just cant make them.

They struggled against ETSU & Xavier. OK State game didn't come easy, & Sam went off.

The 08-09 didnt have enough offensive fire power to win a Championship. That team was too dependent on one guy for scoring. Really good team, but UNC was easily better that year.

Not the case in 2010-11. Pitt could go toe to toe with UConn.

It’s rare that I come away from a loss encouraged, but aside from Tonje playing absolutely possessed, Pitt went toe to toe with a really good Wisconsin team — and was better for large stretches of the game. Foul trouble no doubt contributed to the horrible 2nd half defensive effort, but I still think we will be a really good perimeter defending team. Delalic looks like a player. Hopefully his freshman season trajectory will follow that of Lowe’s and he will be a force in ACC play.

My biggest concern is GDG. When he isn’t hitting 3’s, his poor on-ball defense just gets amplified that much more.

Prayers that Dunn is at least back in full swing for January. Lowe, Dunn and Leggett are the best backcourt in the ACC— and that includes Duke and UNC. Add in Cummings projected growth as the season goes on and I think it’s a slam dunk.
