Quick first impressions from women's team scrimmage yesterday:

--Big surprise to me was the play of true freshman Cassidy Walsh. Looked very good. Hit some 3 pointers - maybe 3 of them. Also hit some short jumpers on the move, so she's not one-dimensional. My guess is she's going to be a very good player eventually and will play a lot this season.

--Tania Lamb, another true freshman, also looked good shooting the 3-ball. I had been wondering where the 3-point shooting would come from - besides Fred Potvin - and it looks like Lamb and Walsh will be decent options. And I thought the mechanics of their shots looked almost identical and very sound.

--Kauai Bradley, another true frosh, didn't do all that much, but she sure looked athletic. Could be good with some coaching and experience.

--Brenna Wise - yet another true freshman - looked good. She's a high energy player. She struggled to finish near the basket early on, but seemed to get better as the game went on. I expect her to play a lot this season.

--The fifth true freshman - Kalista Walters - had a quiet game. Made one nice move under the hoop for a score, but seemed like she has a ways to go to be a big contributor.

--Transfer Destinie Gibbs looked athletic and should help this season because of her experience.

--Nothing stood out so much about the returning players - although I did like seeing Fred Potvin make a nice driving floater - something she has rarely even attempted in her first 2 seasons. This would be a nice complement to her 3-point shooting. She also went strong to the hoop on a steal, which was good to see.

--Yacine Diop made some very athletic plays. She took a lot of shots -- made some, missed some.

With half the roster being new faces, looks like Coach Suzie will have her hands full molding this team into what they can be...

Go Pitt.

I think we were a little spoiled by last season's magic. I am concerned by this year's lack of height in the frontcourt. It could be a huge problem in ACC play.

I agree on both points. We likely take a step back this season because the team doesn't have a Kiesel-type player to lean on.

And dealing with taller post players is certainly going to be a problem - with Pitt's tallest player being 6-2. A 6-4ish type post-player is the missing piece right now on the women's team.

Thanks majors. I had posted a thread asking for information and knew you wouldn't let me down. If I'm not mistaked, which I may be isn't walters listedas 6"4. and do you think wise being a 6'0 guard might help ease the pressureof not having a tall forward or center.

Unfortunately, Kalista Walters is about a 6-footer, though she does have a bigger body like an inside player. She looks somewhat like a slightly shorter version of Stasha Carey. I've also seen Walters listed as being taller elsewhere, but Pitt's roster lists her at 6' and that looked to be correct.

We did see Stasha Carey, at 6-2, play pretty well against some taller centers last season.

After Carey, Pitt has 3 players listed as 6-foot in Walters, Wise, and Bradley. Wise is listed on the roster as a "Guard/Forward" and I think you are correct that we'll see plenty of her working underneath. She appears to be a tenacious and energetic player. I would guess that Pitt will be doing a lot of double-teaming of taller post players and Wise seems like a good player for helping out Stasha Carey in that job.

And there's also the 5'-10" Yacine Diop, who with her quickness and leaping ability plays somewhat taller than she is.

BTW, Bubbles was introduced with the team, but she didn't participate in warm-ups or the scrimmage.

I have a feeling that Wise is going to be the team leader. Her energy is infectious. In high school, she was the best women's player that I'd seen since Suzie at Seton LaSalle.

Yeah, they had her represent the program at the ACC Pre-Season stuff. It's a young team, but it's not a mistake that she was chosen.

Really high on her.

Excellent "Pitt News" article on Coach Suzie. Love the Olympics and WNBA pics in the article...

Didn't realize that following her career in the WNBA she went straight from coaching high school at Oakland Catholic to being head coach of the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx.

Majors I think that's wrong. If I'm not mistaken she played for Cleveland before coaching.
