If you cut cable for one of these, you'd have to buy a Roku, correct? Are there any other options besides the Roku box because I have heard the remote does not have channel numbers so you cant just hit like 325 and have it bring up a channel. Is this true?

Firestick is an option and it doesn't have numbers on the remote either.

None of those streaming services have channel #s anyway. Channel #s are not common in the streaming world.

Other streaming devices are Apple TV, Android TV, and Chromecast

Channels tend to be in alphabetic order on the streaming services. Takes a bit of adjustment as cable typically clusters by networks and specialties but after you get used to it it’s a piece of cake. I cut and have Hulu and love it.

I have Roku/apple tv and fire stick on various TVs and to be honest I think Roku is the best and most reliable

I have Roku and fire stick. I love Roku and hate Fire stick. Roku is just a cleaner more streamlined process in my opinion.

I have a Roku and an Amazon Fire streaming devices. I also have a Roku TV (Roku is integreated in the TV, so no additional device is required).

Roku is my favorite streaming device.

The Roku TV is tremendous.

(NOTE: I am also a Spectrum subscriber, so not a cord cutter...yet. My wife, who doesn't stream, just wants the simplicity of cable and the ability to DVR multiple TV shows simultaneously.)

The streaming services all have favorites options and also last viewed options.

Also, let's be honest out of 100 channels, there may be only 10-15 at most that you view on a regular.

YTTV allows you to group your channels how you like, so I have all my Sports channels grouped together, then the news channels grouped, entertainment etc.

Also, I believe Vue and YTTV allows you to DVR multiple shows simultaneously.

I have the firestick and love that, and there is the option to connect it to your echo and you can change channels with just speaking to the TV.

If you think of it as surfing the web vs. flipping TV channels, the process is a little easier to comprehend. Or, if you use cable today, pull up your channel guide on the screen. The channels are normally in numerical order. You can scroll through and select the channel you want. The streaming services are similar to that, except they are in alphabetical order rather than channel number order. For example, your ABC station would come up first.

As others have mentioned, you can program your favorites; so; your favorites would come up first also in alphabetical order, then ALL channels come up in alphabetical order.

Contrary to the others, I have 1 Roku and 4 Firesticks. I prefer the Firesticks to the Roku as I have better connectivity with them.

Can I buy an ACC network package without having cable? Does it require buying another ESPN package as well?

I have a roku and xbox360 for reference.

you can just say channel 325 or espn or in your case boring Eastern European Halupki League Soccer or whatever if you get a slight upgrade on the remote.....but as one who channel surfs I will miss it when I get around to cutting the cord..

You can sign up for one of the streaming services and not have cable, however there is no ACCN only package.

That's probably about 5 years away. Eventually, ESPN will offer the ability to stream all of their channels without cable. It would probably be like $50/month for all of them or like lower prices for individual channels.

Cut the cord 3 years ago and have now saved probably over 2k and my TV experience is 3 times better.
You'll love it

Sorry if it's a dumb question but does this just mean you can't get Pitt games now? Or do you use sling or something?
I wont tell you everything , but just get PS VUE on firestick. They have the most sports but sling has the most Tv and movies . also you and everyone can use reddit.

I'm not a cord cutter, I've never had cable. I have Netflix and prime and an antenna. But I am just trying to understand the cheapest way to get Pitt games and nothing else.

You need to have a subscription to a tv provider. It can be cable (like Comcast), satellite (like DirectTV), or a streaming service (like YouTubeTV). How have you watched ESPN in the past?

Not sure if you’re talking to me, or if you’re kidding. But I’ve gone to 90% or so of home games for about 45 years.

The remotes for some better models of the firesticks and rokus have microphones where it's easy to navigate to the channel/network that you want. Just hold in the button on the remote, speak into the mic the channel and it'll change channels for you.

? How do you dvr once you cut the cable? TVO?

DVR would be the same as cable/satellite.

The streaming services have built in DVR functionality.

Yes it is via the "Cloud" similar to how computer data storage is done today. You Tube has unlimited, HULU has some size restriction on how much you can have stored at any one time. Personally. I almost never store anything to view later--just don't have enough interest in regular TV programming to do that unless it were a Pitt FB or BB game that I had to miss for a higher priority event like a wedding, funeral, grandkids birthday party, or the like.

Anyone else finds it ironic that there is now an ACC Network, and now it will be harder than ever to find ACC games on TV.
It's similar to the irony when everyone was thinking it was a great thing for Pitt when Notre Dame aligned with the ACC instead of the Big Ten. And it promptly meant the end of our nearly annual home and home agreements to play Notre Dame. Now we see them about as frequently as Clemson and Florida State (which was another example of irony during the giddiness over getting into the ACC ... being able to see the actual interesting teams of the conference as often as Spock gets laid ... along with our prompt collapse in basketball and disintegration of the relationship with our greatest coach ever).

But those 11am starts are gonna be great aren't they?

People need to be careful what they wish for sometimes... almost all the time, in Pitt's case... big decisions are not made with the benefit of Pitt or its fans in mind...

Have roku just got Hulu live 2 days ago and so far so good no complaints. Got rid of FuboTV and SlingTv

I just moved to West Texas, so I need to decide between Hulu Live, PS Vue or YouTube TV in order to get the ACCN. Any recommendations? Thanks!

I plan on making the changes on Monday. I am canceling my $165 Comcast and plan to get my internet service from Verizon for $40 and tv channels from Hulu for $45 per month. I have a smart tv and am not sure what else I will need. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

It's easier than ever! Great time to be alive. When the Big Ten Network arrived, you could have been stuck with few or no choices, but the ACCN arrived at the perfect time. Anyone who wants it can get it, and for less of a cost than ever. I'm paying less than ever for TV yet getting more than I've ever wanted or could ever conceivably watch.

Just make sure Verizon is giving you enough download bandwidth (speed) internet. If it is a DSL line it will be too slow. You need at least 5Mbs minimum speed for HD streaming. I would recommend it be advertised as 8 or higher Mbs.

Age seems to be a defining matter in how "easy" things are. People Of A Certain Age just want to turn on the tv, one service, flick through set channels. I have fought the war of trying to get my "trial" 1 year contracts renewed and get submerged in the quagmire of the 'customer service' labyrinth. A lot of you folks must be retired or self employed or unemployed to be able to spend countless hours joining and canceling and configuring and reconfiguring your services. Actually canceling the service through Verizon or Comcast (I've done both, painfully) ... you need to take a day off and get a good headset. You can't even really get away anyway because you need good internet service to do all this magic streaming, and as others mentioned, getting internet service alone by these same companies will be prohibitively priced, they aren't going to give up their cash cows without a fight. I commend your diligence to bob and weave constantly with this stuff... but I definitely don't see how it's "easier" in any semblance.

Bingo. I don't want to be an IT tech, nor have to intern with the Geek Squad to watch TV.

It's been exhausting just reading about the others constantly joining and canceling hulu, sling, ps vue, youtube tv. And with all of them you (presumably) still need the Hd antenna to get local channels. Which means having to switch the Source constantly. If my game is via acc network on hulu but i want to switch to the game of the day on CBS (kdka) it is no longer a hitting of the "last channel" button. Etc. Etc.

In my limited experience the streaming services take a bit of time to reconnect as well. Possibly due to my internet... but I pay for a supposed accelerated speed for that...

For my main great room, my smart TV (brand that supposedly is a premium brand, purchased only 4 months ago) lost its Wifi connection randomly and constantly. Until i finally had to go to the extreme of taking a picture of the screen with my phone off the manual IP connection codes when it was working, then manually configuring them to those settings the next time it stopped working... finally has kept it from dropping the connection ... and this I did on my own guess, the tech support had no idea what to do other than reset from the start and let it reconfig the Wifi as if brand new. Talking to others, people seem to think that is common and acceptable with not just that brand but most others. Well, no it isn't. That's ridiculous, no matter what age you are.

And the other sets in the house are all various vintages of tech generations, I've gotten firesticks for a couple to try out streaming on them, various degrees of success. Maybe i need Smart TVs everywhere now. But the older sets ain't all that old, have HD capability etc and all work fine, and im not an Andrew Luck who can just toss money away frivolously.

Now excuse me, but a child is on my lawn and I must shake my fist at him. But shake my fist I shall.

Which is why I think unless the people at Comcast XFINITY are complete morons a deal is gonna get done fairly soon.

Disney\ESPN has this brand new channel, they want exposure. I find it literally unbelievable that their offer to Comcast is too pricey. Without one of the largest cable providers, their channel is essentially a minor league network that nobody takes seriously.

On the flip side, Comcast absolutely can not afford to not carry this channel for very long. With cord cutting/streaming services becoming more and more popular, think about who is mostly sticking with cable. It’s senior citizens and people who find cable easiest to watch all their live sports. For example, there is no streaming service where you can get AT&T Sports Net, the local channel here which televises the Pirates and Penguins.

That is literally the only thing cable has over the streaming services. If the streaming services are now offering something the cable company isn’t, something people are as emotionally invested in as watching their alma mater, what the hell does cable and it’s ridiculous prices have to offer over the streaming services?
